Raider football playoff foe will be Manson Northwest Webster . . . again

The playoff picture looks a lot like it did last year for the Mount Ayr Community Raider football team.

As the second place team District 6 (in terms of point differential), the Raiders will host third place Manson Northwest Webster Wednesday, Oct. 27 in Mount Ayr. This was the same team the Raiders faced last year in the first game.

The Raiders tied for the district title with Pella Christian and Des Moines Christian with 6-1 records but the tie breaker was the point differential in games played. Because the Raiders had more close games than Pella Christian, they ended the season with a differential of 8.43 points per game compared to 9.14 points per game for Pella Chrsitian. Des Moines Christian was third with 7.29 points.

Teams can earn up to 13 points per game going toward the point differential each week.

In other games between schools in District 6 and District 7 Wednesday night, Nodaway Valley will travel to Prairie Valley Gowrie, Panorama will be at Pella Christian and Des Moines Christian will be at Woodward-Granger.

If the Raiders win Wednesday night, they would advance to play the winner of the Nodaway Valley-Prairie Valley Gowrie game on Monday, Nov. 2. Because Prairie Valley Gowrie was the district winner they would be the host if they win. The trip to Gowrie was made last year by the Raiders as well.

Watch the website for more updates on the football playoffs.

Raiders surprise Pella Christian 37-33 to force district first place tie

 BY JAMES SAVILLE

Mount Ayr Community assured a Class 1A football playoff spot by defeating Pella Christian 37-33 in an offensive shootout on the Raiders field on Friday, Oct. 16.

The Raiders now hold a 3-1 edge over the eighth-rated Eagles with all four games being high scoring affairs.  Mount Ayr Commuity  won the 2006 game, 52-33, and the 2007 game 36-33, and the Eagles took last year’s contest 27-26.

“We gave up points and yards, but we still had people in position and made outstanding plays on defense as we forced five turnovers on Friday, “ said a relieved coach Delwyn Showalter. “They have a very potent offense and many talented, well-coached athletes, so I have to be pleased with the way the Raiders stepped up and met the challenge.”

“I can’t say enough about our offense,” said coach Derek Lambert.  “Our guys just kept the pressure on and put up a lot of points on a very good team.”

Mount Ayr Community took the opening kick off and it only took them three plays and 36 seconds to get the game off to a rousing start.  Matt Jones carried 16 yards for a first down and after an incomplete pass, Chad Starlin took the handoff on a counter play and raced 54 yards to the house giving Mount Ayr a 6-0 lead.  The PAT was wide right leaving the Raiders with a six-point lead at the 11:24 mark.

Pella Christian had its only lead of the game less than two minutes later as they scored on their first possession also.  The Eagles got a great kick off return and Bret Nieuwsma provided much of the offense after that.  The hard running tailback carried four times for 35 yards  getting the ball to the Raider 17.  Jamie Blom swept around right end and the Eagles had tied the game at six with 9:36 left in the opening quarter.  Trey Hugen kicked the PAT and Pella Christian led 7-6.

Mount Ayr Community came right back going 74 yards on a 10 play scoring drive of their own.  David Showalter hit Matt Sobotka for 11 yards to get the drive started.  Cade Lambson, Dusty Lyden  and Matt Sobotka then took turns churning up big yards on the ground moving the ball down field.  Matt Sobotka juked his way 17 yards down to the Eagle 14 for the Raiders fourth first down of the drive.  Sobotka went 14 yards off the right side into the west end zone getting the Raiders back the lead.  He also snared the PAT pass from Showalter, putting the Raiders ahead 14-7 with 5:42 left in the opening stanza.

Kyle Nikkel put his big right arm on display on the Eagles next possession.  He completed four passes helping Pella Christian score its second TD of the game.  He completed two to Alex Fynaardt and one to Trey Hugen, before hitting Zach Zylstra with a 15-yard strike in the back corner of the end zone at the 1:49 mark of the first quarter.  Trey Hugen’s PAT tied the game at 14-14.

The Raiders brought the fifth kickoff of the game back to the 37.  A run by Bradley Love, two carries by Matt Jones and  a Showalter completion to Korey Beaman got the Raiders on the march again as the wild first period ended tied 14-14.

The Raiders had a first down on the Eagle 21, but they were thrown for two consecutive losses moving the ball back to the 25.  An incomplete pass and a motion penalty had the Raiders facing a fourth and 19 from the 30.  Korey Beaman kicked the ball as if it had been propelled by Mike Gilliland’s Raider cannon and it sailed cleanly between the uprights for a school record 47-yard field goal.  Mike Gilliland did fire his cannon and with 10:28 left in the first half and Mount Ayr led 17-14.

Korey Beaman got the first of his four interceptions of the night as he picked off a Kyle Nikkel’s pass on the Eagles next possession near midfield.  The Eagle defense stiffened forcing the Raiders to punt the ball back to the visitors

Bret Nieuwsma showed why he is one of the top running backs in District 6 as he carried five times helping move the ball into Raider territory at the 30.  Korey Beaman snared another interception in the end zone and brought it out only to the two-yard line.

A determined run by Chad Starlin got the Raiders a critical first down at the 19.  Matt Jones then got loose for runs of 27 and 14, getting first downs into Eagle land.  David Showalter flipped a pass to Cade Lambson in the flat and the big fullback rumbled 18 yards inside the 10.  Matt Jones took over from there, blasting in from the two with 20 seconds left in the half.  Beaman made the margin 24-14 by nailing his first PAT of the game.

Korey Beaman intercepted his third pass of the game ending the first half of action on the Eagles’ last possession of the first 24 minutes.

The weather worsened to start the second half as what had been a dreary night now became damp and dreary as a steady drizzle fell for the entire second half.  The Eagles took the second half kickoff and returned it to the 29-yard line.  Trey Hugen made a great leaping catch of a Nikkel aerial to keep the Eagle drive alive inside Raider territory.  Alex Fynaardt slipped off a couple of tackles and galloped 42 yards for the first TD of the second half cutting the lead to 24-20.  A bad snap caused an unsuccessful PAT, leaving the margin at four with 9:52 on the clock.

It took Mount Ayr Community 13 seconds to get the difference back to 10 points.  The Eagles kickoff went out of bounds giving the Raiders the ball at the 35.    David Showalter zipped a quick pass out to Matt Jones and he did the rest, outrunning the Eagle secondary 65 yards to paydirt, making the score 30-20.  The Raiders botched the PAT, keeping the score at 10-point advantage.

It looked like the Eagles were going to strike right back as they were moving the ball at a steady pace into the Raiders end of the field.  The Raider defenders were able to strip the leather pill free and Cade Lambson recovered at the Mount Ayr 27-yard line to stop the threat, however.

David Showalter hit Korey Beaman for nine yards to get the Raiders rolling again.  Two plays later the junior quarterback got free on the outside and showed his speed rambling nearly 30 yards to the Pella Christian 25.  Cade Lambson ran through and over tacklers into the red zone down to the 11.  David Showalter followed his blockers from five yards out two plays later increasing the lead.  Beaman kicked the PAT and Mount Ayr led 37-20 with 3:51 left in the third.

Pella Christian controlled the ball for nearly seven minutes on their next possession.  Alex Fynaardt completed the 19-play drive by diving over the goal with 9:15 left in the game from the two-yard line.  Hugen added the PAT and Mount Ayr Community’s lead was cut back to 10 37-27.

A big pass from Showalter to Starlin good for 35 yards got the Raiders deep into Eagle territory on the Raider’s next possession.  The Eagles were able to take over on downs as the Raiders came up a yard short at the 11-yard line.  The Eagles got two first downs before Korey Beaman recorded his fourth interception of the night, giving the ball back to the Raiders at the Pella Christian 37 with less than six minutes to play.  Mount Ayr Community got a first down at the 25, but a  Raider fumble gave the visitors another chance.   Nikkel hooked up with Hugen for about 28 yards across the 50.  Bret Nieuwsma carried twice for 33 yards and Jamie Blom scored on a one-yard plunge and things were getting too close.  The Eagles botched their two-point conversion but had cut the lead to 37-33 with 2:51 left in the game.

Pella Christian kicked the ball out of bounds allowing the Raiders to begin at the 35.  Big runs by Cade Lambson got the Raiders in scoring position again inside the Eagle 15 and Pella Christian had no timeouts.  A victory by Mount Ayr Community would throw the District 6 race into a three-way tie, but with the point system determining the district  champ Mount Ayr really needed to win the game by at least seven points in order to move into the leadership spot in the district.

The Raiders tried a field goal as time was running out, but Beaman’s attempt was just outside the right upright.

Pella Christian had time for one last play,  but this year Nikkel’s last desperation pass fell incomplete instead of going for the win and the Raiders had a great victory 37-33.

The Raiders had a very productive offensive night against the Eagles.  Matt Jones had 84 yards rushing on 10 carries, Cade Lambson had 84 yards on 13 carries, Chad Starlin 80 yards on six attempts, Matt Sobotka 58 yards on 11 tries, David Showalter 51 yards on six carries, Dusty Lyden 33 yards on six tries and Brad Love six yards on two carries for nearly 400 yards on the ground by the Raiders.

Brett Nieuwsma led the Eagle rushing with 188 yards on 29 carries.

David Showalter completed seven of 12 passes good for 158 yards against the Eagles.  Korey Beaman caught two passes and Matt Jones, Matt Sobotka, Tyler Hinz, Cade Lambson and Chad Starlin  one each on Friday.

The Pella Christian offense kept the Raider secondary busy as Chad Starlin and Matt Sobotka topped the Raiders with 23 and 22 tackle points respectively.  The remaining tackle points were as follows:  Matt Jones --16, Brad Love--13, Cade Lambson--10, Dylan Lame--10, Korey Beaman--10, Jake Glendenning--10, Jesse Penick--7, Dusty Lyden--5, Devin Richards--4, Brian Still--3, Dustin Pritchett--3, Drake Schafer--2, Malcom Mercer--2, Tyler Hinz--1 and David Showalter--1.

Pleasant trip to Pleasantville brings 24-13 Raider victory, third win in row

 BY JAMES SAVILLE

Mount Ayr Community won their third football game in row defeating the Pleasantville Trojans Friday, Oct. 9 on the Trojan’s home field 28-13.

“We played very good at times, but our inconsistency and turnovers hurt us,’” said coach Derek Lambert.

“Our defense came up with some big plays when we had to, as Beier is a fine quarterback and he made some quality throws on Friday,” stated coach Delwyn Showalter.

Mount Ayr Community received the opening kick off and started their first drive on the 24- yard line.  Matt Jones got a first down out to the 40, but the Raider drive stalled and Korey Beaman punted the ball to the Trojans as they began their first opportunity on their own 27.

The Trojans used five rushes and two Beier to Colton Furnal passes to get a first and goal situation just inside the Raider 10-yard line.  The Raiders forced a fumble, however, stopping the Trojan drive at the Raider six-yard line.  The Raiders faced a third and six situation from the 10 and David Showalter got outside the Trojan defense and skirted the right side for a big 23-yard run, giving the offense some operating room.  Matt Sobotka,  showing no ill effects from a four-week injury layoff, scampered for another first down at the Raider 46.  Later in the drive he grabbed a Showalter pass, good for 33 yards,  giving the Raiders a first down at the Pleasantville 12.  Cade Lambson carried for six yards and Matt Sobotka went the final six for the first Raider touchdown of the evening.  Korey Beaman added the PAT and the Raiders led 7-0 with 3:08 left in the opening period.

Mount Ayr Community stopped the second Trojan drive on downs at the Raider 23 early in the second quarter.  An unsuccessful fake punt by the Raiders on their next possession gave Pleasantville good field position to start their third drive at the Trojan 45.  The Raider defense rose to the occasion and forced Connor Cummings to punt the ball back to the Raiders.

Cade Lambson carried twice, getting the Raiders a first down at the Pleasantville 42-yard line.  Dusty Lyden got some great blocks from his team mates and raced 41 yards to the one-yard line.  David Showalter pushed in from the one raising the margin to 13-0.  Korey Beaman added the PAT at the 5:38 mark, making the score 14-0 in favor of the visitors.

Pleasantville fumbled on their next possession giving the Raiders the ball at the Trojan 35.  Matt Jones carried the ball to the 23, David Showalter took it to the 11,  and two blasts from fullback Cade Lambson and the Raiders had a three-touchdown lead.  Beaman split the uprights and the score was 21-0 with 2:20 left in the half.

The Raider’s Korey Beaman intercepted a Beier pass, but the Raiders failed to capitalize and punted the ball back to the Trojans.  Bobby Beier hit on five of seven passes, and a 33-yard strike to D.J. Weaver got the Trojans a first down at the Raider one.  Beier scored from there and the PAT was no good making the halftime score 21-6 in favor of the Raiders.

Mount Ayr Community had the ball for only for only 10 plays in the third period as they fumbled the ball away on both of their offensive possessions.  The defense did a good job defending the aerial attack of the Trojans as neither team scored in the third period, but  Trojans took advantage of the good field position and were inside the Raider 10 as the horn sounded ending the third 12-minute stanza.

Bobby Beier hit Clint Adreon with a six-yard scoring pass and Curvin Wentz added the PAT, cutting the lead to 21-13 with 11:53 left in the game.

Pleasantville’s kickoff went out of bounds allowing the Raiders to start their next drive at the Mount Ayr 35-yard line.   Matt Jones secured a David Showalter pass and took it 33 yards to the Trojan 27- yard line. Jones caught a 14-yard pass, getting the Raiders another first down at the 13.  Four plays later he took it into the end zone from four yards out.  Beaman was able to kick a moving football for the PAT and the scoreboard read 28-13 with 9:05 left in the game.

Pleasantville took the ball all the way down to the Raider four on their next possession.  Malcom Mercer broke through the Trojan line and chased Beier back about 20 yards, causing him to flip the ball to the sidelines for an intentional grounding call.  Beier got a completion to the 16, but the Raiders took over on downs at that point.

The  Raiders were gracious guests as they gave the ball right back to the Trojans as they committed another costly fumble.  Chad Starlin was able to bail the Raiders out of trouble as he intercepted a Beier pass at the Raider 20.  The Raiders picked up a couple of first downs enabling them to run out the clock and preserve their fourth district win.

Matt Jones rushed for 86 yards on 12 carries to lead the Raider ground attack.  Cade Lambson picked up 72 yards on 11 carries, Dusty Lyden had 43 yards on three carries, Matt Sobotka 40 yards on seven carries, David Showalter earned 39 yards on six tries and Chad Starlin had nine yards on three carries.

Showalter completed eight of 14 passes for 120 yards against the Trojans.  Matt Jones had 56 yards with three receptions, Matt Sobotka caught two passes good for 41 yards, and Korey Beaman, Tyler Hinz and Dusty Lyden each had one catch on Friday.

Cade Lambson was in on 18 tackles (two for losses) and Malcom Mercer was credited with eight tackles (two for losses).  The other tackles for Raider defenders were: Korey Beaman -- 9, Matt Jones -- 8, Dylan Lame -- 6, Chad Starlin -- 4, Matt Sobotka -- 3, Brian Still -- 3, Jake Glendenning -- 3, Drake Schafer -- 3, Dusty Lyden -- 2, Jesse Penick -- 2, Austin Steinbach -- 2,  Devin Richards -- 1, Tyler Hinz -- 1, David Showalter -- 1,  and Dustin Pritchett -- 1.                   MAC       Pl

A conference loss to Nodaway Valley 3-0 and a non-conference win over Murray 3-1 were the results for the Mount Ayr Community Raiderette volleyball team in actions this past week.

The Raiderettes now have an overall 11-6 overall record for the 2009 season,

Nodaway Valley 3, Mount Ayr Community 0

Nodaway Valley handed the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes a Pride of Iowa defeat by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23.

“We passed the ball extremely well tonight, “ said coach Amy Shields.  “We fell behind early in each of the three games and just never could get a sustainable lead.”
