Raiderettes handle Demons 46-40 in season basketball opener

Season for the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes opened Monday when the Raiderettes took a 46-40 victory over the Lamoni Demons Monday, Nov. 23.

“Lamoni is a good team,” said coach Thad Streit.  “Becca and Tiffany had great nights, but we have to have better  balance in our scoring in upcoming games.”

Mount Ayr Community used a strong defense and early scoring by Becca Pennington, Claire Andresen and Tiffany Wimer to jump out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of the opening quarter.  Amber Quick got the first hoop for Lamoni as the Demons cut into the Raiderette lead.  Lamoni trailed 10-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter before Molly Budach hit two free throws and Becca scored two to up the lead to 14-9 with a minute left in the opening stanza.  Mikaela Millslagle hit a two-pointer cutting the Raiderette lead to 14-11 at the end of the first eight minutes.

Becca Pennington hit a couple of drive-in shots to make the score 18-12 with six minutes left in the first half.  Amber Quick countered for the visitors cutting the lead to 18-16 halfway through the quarter.  Tiffany Wimer scored 5 points in the second quarter as the Raiderettes took a 26-22 lead into the locker room.

Pennington remained the principal scorer for Mount Ayr Community as she scored seven more points in the third period.  The Raiderettes maintained the lead throughout the quarter that ended with the Raiderettes still on top 38-33.

Keeley Brunner scored five quick points for Lamoni as the Demons tied the game at 40-40 with five minutes left.  The Raiderettes slowed the offense and were able to get Becca Pennington and Tiffany Wimer open for close-in shots putting the Raiderettes back on top for good.  Wimer hit another basket inside 30 seconds to seal the 46-40 win.

Becca Pennington poured in 25 points to lead all scorers and Tiffany Wimer added 11 points for the Raiderettes.  Amber Quick paced the visitors with 14 points and junior center Keeley Brunner chipped in with 11 for Lamoni.  The Demons hit 40 percent from the floor and 42 percent from the line on Monday.  The Raiderettes were 35 percent from the field and connected on 45 percent of their 22 charity tosses.

Tiffany Wimer was the rebound leader as she grabbed eight caroms for the Raiderettes.  She also topped the team in steals with five and Bailey Myer was the assist leader with four.

Mount Ayr Community played East Union in the championship game on Tuesday and Lamoni faced Orient-Macksburg in the consolation contest.

The Eagles downed the Bulldogs 38-35 in the opening game on Monday.  East Union got off to an early lead and then held off a furious rally by Orient-Macksburg late in the game.  East Union led 14-4 after one period and built the lead to 23-9 at the half.

Tessa Mittag and Ashley West led a fourth quarter rally which fell three points short, allowing the Eagles to escape with the 38-35 win.  Mittag and West scored 13 each for O-M and Mariah Kruse tallied 11 to lead the Eagles scoring.

22 Raiders preparing for basketball season

Mount Ayr Community began practice for the upcoming basketball season on November 16 with 22 young men reporting to coaches Bret Ruggles and Jeff Levine.  The Raiders return five letterwinners from last season’s year’s 7-15 squad.  Senior Malcom Mercer, juniors Colton Bolles, David Showalter and Matt Sobotka and sophomore Dusty Lyden earned “M’s” last year with Mercer averaging nearly 10 points per game for the Raiders.

These Raiders  will  be counting on help from seniors Tyler Hinz, Matt Mercer and Brian Still and juniors Korey Beaman, Jake Glendenning and Christian Overholtzer to lead the Mount Ayr Community varsity.

The Raider JV will have a good group of incoming freshmen to complement sophomores Josh Case, Matt Kerns, Josh Fernandez, Alex Sobotka and Joey Taylor.  Freshmen Clint Bird, Dylan Doman, Braydee Poore, Austin Quick, Jacob Still and Johnathan Triggs had an outstanding middle school record and are ready to test their skills at the high school level.

“We have some veterans coming back, but we are also anxious to see how our talented newcomers react in game situations” said coach Bret Ruggles.

The Raider coaches rate Bedford and Southeast Warren as Pride of Iowa conference title favorites.  The Bulldogs return 6’ 6” center Tim Schweitzer, 6’ 4”  power forward Ryley  Thornton and 6’1” guard Chris Lindenmeyer.  Southeast Warren returns two all conference performers as well.

Coach  Darrell Burmeister will try to build another strong Nodaway Valley squad around  all conference performers Nick Fox and Clint Varley.  The rest of the conference should be pretty evenly balanced with several teams having an opportunity to finish in the upper half in the conference race.   Mount Ayr Community will be working to be one of those teams.

The Raiders open at home against the Murray Mustangs on Monday, Nov. 30. The Raiders travel to Corning on December 4 to open the POI conference race.

Seniors include Tyler Hinz, Malcom Mercer, Matt Mercer and Brian Still. Juniors are Korey Beaman, Colton Bolles, Jake Glendenning, Christian Overholtzer, David Showalter and Matt Sobotka.

Raiderettes begin practice for basketball season

Mount Ayr Community  Raiderettes began practice on November 9 for the upcoming girls high school basketball season.

Thad Streit returns as the Raiderette head coach and will be  assisted again by Mark Budach.  The Raiderettes are coming off an outstanding 18-4 overall record and a 13-3 Pride of Iowa mark in 2008-2009.    The Raiderettes return six letterwinners from that squad and four Raiderettes with a  wealth of game experience in senior Tiffany Wimer and juniors Bailey Myer, Becca Pennington, and Jensen Stewart.

Wimer averaged 10.1 points per game and 6.2 rebounds last season and Becca Pennington and Jensen Stewart both averaged over 7.8 points per game  for Mount Ayr Community last season.

“We will have to get more scoring from everyone this season,” said coach Thad Streit.  “We do have people who have played a lot, they just need to continue to improve to make us a conference contender again this season.”  Coach Streit stated that Martensdale-St. Marys will be the conference favorite as they return  6’ 4” MacKenzie Morrison and three other starters from last year’s state tournament team.   The Blue Devils also have 2007-2008 leading scorer Kelli Sherwood back this season.    The 5’ 10” senior missed the entire 2008-2009 season with a knee injury.

Bedford and Corning both return all their starters from last season and Bedford has some outstanding freshmen who could have an impact this season. Central Decatur lost several starters from last season’s state qualifying team, but the Cards have built a strong program over the last few seasons, so it will be interesting to see what happens in Leon.

East Union and Lenox should be better and Nodaway Valley has some rebuilding to do as they also lost several starters to graduation.  Interstate 35 returns four starters led by junior Allison Seibert and sophomore Olivia Sulentic and Pleasantville will be looking for help from returning juniors Konner Gordon and Kaitlyn Friday.  Southeast Warren lost its top three scorers from last season, so they have some work to do to revamp their offense and Wayne will try to bounce back from a 1-21 campaign last season.  The Falcons do return all five starters including Crystal Glade, who averaged nearly 11.0 points per game last year.  The Raiderettes open the season with their own invitational tournament on November 23-24 in Mount Ayr.  Lamoni will face East Union in the first game with a 6  p.m. tip-off.  Mount Ayr Community will play the Orient-Macksburg Lady Bulldogs in the second game of the evening.

The Raiderette roster includes:

Senior letterwinner Tiffany Wimer.

Manson Northwest Webster rallies to end Raider season 28-21

BY JAMES SAVILLE

Zach Steinhoff’s long kickoff return with just over a minute left in the game allowed the Manson-Northwest Webster Cougars to edge the Mount Ayr Community Raiders 28-21 on Wednesday, October 28 in Mount Ayr.

“Manson-Northwest Webster has a lot of very good, experienced players and they made some key plays for their team tonight,” said coach Delwyn Showalter.  “We missed some tackles that hurt, but we were in position most of the time. They just made great plays which allowed them to get the victory.”

“The Cougars definitely were more experienced and athletic this season on both sides of the ball,” stated coach Derek Lambert. “We had some critical turnovers, but our guys never gave up and our last drive was excellent.”

Mount Ayr Community took the opening kickoff and returned it to the 23-yard line.  The Cougar defense forced the Raiders to punt and began their first possession on their own 32.  Two plays later the Raider defense caused a fumble and Jake Glendenning fell on the ball at the 31.

David Showalter found a wide open Korey Beaman for a 31-yard TD strike and the Raiders had an early lead at the 9:29 mark of the opening quarter. The PAT was wide right leaving the score at 6-0.

The Raider defense forced the Cougars into a three -and-out situation at the 44-yard line.  Kaden Cue boomed a 56-yard punt into the end zone causing the Raiders to start their next drive on their own 20.

David Showalter blasted up the middle for 25 yards and a first down at the 45.  Chad Starlin carried for another first down into Cougar territory on the 45-yard line.  A mishandled exchange proved costly as the Raiders put the ball on the ground and the Cougars pounced on it at the 43-yard line.

Twait hit Zach Steinhoff on a 25-yard pass play getting Manson-Northwest Webster a first down at the Raider 25.  Three plays later Brandon McGinty tied the game at 6-6 with a quick 11-yard burst into the end zone with 4:42 left in the first quarter.  Cris Stuhrenberg nailed the PAT and the Raiders trailed 7-6.

The Raiders were going nowhere on their next drive and punted the pigskin back to the Cougars at the Manson-Northwest Webster 42.  The Raiders finally stopped the Cougars when a fourth down pass was ruled incomplete near the Raider 10, giving the ball back on downs at their own 24.

The Raiders were forced to punt on their first drive of the second quarter and turned the ball back to the Cougars near midfield.  Manson tried to fool the Raiders on fourth down, but the Raiders threw the ball carrier for a two-yard loss regaining the ball at the 43.

The Raiders tried a fake punt of their own on their next possession with negative results allowing the Cougars to get the ball at the 49.

It only took Manson five plays to increase their one-point lead as they scored their second TD of the game with 5:48 left before half-time. The Raider nemesis Zach Steinhoff was the culprit as he was able to corral the 31-yard pass from Kyle Twait as he was falling down in the east end zone.  Stuhrenberg added the PAT and the Raiders trailed 14-6.

A Raider penalty allowed Stuhrenberg to kickoff from the 45 and he boomed the ball into the end zone putting the Raider offense on the 20 to start their next drive.  Matt Jones ripped off a 22-yard piece of real estate getting the Raiders a quick first down.  Showalter fired a short pass to Tyler Hinz and a Cougar penalty moved the ball to the 27-yard line.  Matt Jones carried four times and Chad Starlin twice, with Jones going over from the three with 2:12 left in the half.  Starlin caught the PAT pass from Showalter and the Raiders had tied the contest 14-14.     Neither team was able to move the ball the remainder of the quarter and the teams headed to the locker rooms knotted at 14-14.

Manson took the second half kickoff and used a 12-play drive to get the Cougars a first down at the 34 on the Raiders side of the field.  The Raider defense stiffened and the Raiders began their first possession of the second half at the 35-yard line.

Two carries by Starlin and the Raiders had a first down near the 50.  Showalter carried into Cougar territory and a big 21-yard run by Matt Jones got Mount Ayr a first down at the 25-yard line.  The Raiders were fighting for extra yardage on their next carry when the ball was punched free and the visitors had another big break covering the fumble at the 17.

It looked like the Raiders might stop the Cougars near midfield as the visitors faced a third and 11 situation, but Zach Steinhoff grabbed a Twait pass, avoided a couple of tacklers and picked up a first down at the Raider 40-yard line.

The 12-play drive was finally halted on an incomplete pass at the Raider 22 to open the final quarter.

Dusty Lyden had a big 23-yard run off the right side out to the 45.  Matt Jones lugged the ball five straight times getting Mount Ayr a first down at the Cougar 30.  The Raiders had a holding penalty moving the ball back to the 40 where disaster struck the Raider offense again as they lost their third fumble of the night.

Reserve running back Cris Stuhrenberg carried five times for 45 yards as the Cougars got a first- and-goal just inside the Raider 10.  Big Kyle Twait slipped a would be tackler on a crucial third-and-six and used all of his 6’ 4” frame to score the go ahead touchdown with 4:43 left in the game.  The Cougars missed the PAT leaving the count at 20-14.

The Raiders started their scoring drive at their own 30-yard line. David Showalter rushed for nine yards picking up a first down on a fourth-and-one play keeping the drive alive.  A great block by Cade Lambson allowed Showalter to complete a pass to Starlin getting another first down at the 38.  Tyler Hinz caught a 10-yard pass for another first down at the 28.  A swing pass to Jones gave the Raiders a first-and-goal at the 10.  Cade Lambson used his size and strength to pull down a Showalter pass in the west end zone and the game was tied 20-20 with 1:16  left in  the game.  Korey Beaman drove the PAT inside the left upright out of the hold of Brett England, giving the Raiders a 21-20 lead.

The lead held up for all of 14 seconds as Zach Steinhoff took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards up the middle of the field to the house, erasing the lead and shocking the stadium crowd.  Steinhoff flipped a short pass to Stuhrenberg making the score 28-21.

Four incomplete passes by the Raiders and the Cougars were able to run out the clock, dashing the Raiders playoff hopes for 2009.

Matt Jones rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries giving him 1,058 yards rushing for the 2009 season.  Jones is the first Raider to gain over 1,000 yards in a single season since the Raiders switched out of the I formation offensive set in 1998.  The last Raider to gain over 1,000 yards in a season occurred in 1996, when tailback Cass Shay accomplished the feat.

Showalter rushed for 39 yards, Lyden had 27, Sobotka had 19, Starlin had 18 and Lambson had eight to give Mount Ayr Community over 200 yards on the ground on Wednesday.

David Showalter completed 9 of 20 passes to six different receivers good for 99 yards.  Korey Beaman caught a TD for 31 yards, and Cade Lambson had one nine-yard TD reception. Matt Jones caught one aerial and Penick, Starlin and Hinz had two catches each on Wednesday.

Matt Jones had two tackles for losses and Lambson, Brad Love, Malcom Mercer, Jake Glendenning, Dylan Lame and Jesse Penick each recorded one tackle resulting in a Cougar loss.

Raider tackles were as follows: Mercer, eight; Beaman, eight; Lambson, seven; Sobotka, six; Glendenning, six; Jones, five; Still, five;  Lyden, four; Lame, four; Schafer, four;  Pritchett, four;  Starlin, three;  Love, three;  Penick, three;  Richards, two;  Hinz, one.

This was the final game for seniors Tyler Hinz, Matt Jones, Dylan Lame, Malcom Mercer,  Devin Richards, Adam Sickels, Chad Starlin and Brian Still.  The coaching staff agreed that these young men have been great contributors to Raider football.

Delwyn Showalter stated, “The 2009 Raider football team was a great bunch of hardworking football players. Athletes many times do not work hard enough to reach their full talent potential. This was not the case with this group, as they got as close to achieving that level as any squad we as a coaching staff have had the privilege to coach.”

Coach Lambert echoed the praise for the 2009 team and added,  “Our fan support has always been outstanding, but this year given all the circumstances (weather, injuries, etc.), it was unbelievable and greatly appreciated.”
