Cade Lambson first in discus, second in shot at state track meet

Sophomore Cade Lambson made his first trip to the state track meet as a Raider a memorable one as he won the 1-A discus title and was runner-up in the shot put.

“What an awesome performance,” said an excited coach Brad Elliott.  “Cade just got edged on Thursday in the shot, but that just seemed to make him more determined in the discus on Friday.”  Mount Ayr Community’s most recent boy’s state track champion was Brad Elliott,  who won the 800 meter run nine years ago in class 2-A.

Mount Ayr Community’s Jeff Inloes finished 18th in the 3200 meter run on Thursday with a time of  10:49.70.  Lisbon’s Conner Smock ran 9:47.25 to win the event.

Freshman Dustin Pritchett threw the shot 44’ 9”, but did qualify for the finals.  Dustin was one of only two freshman in the field of 24 qualifiers.

Cade Lambson threw 53’ 3.75” to finish second to Andrew Simons of West Lyon,  who tossed 54’ 2” to take the title.  All but one of Cade’s six throws were over 50 feet.

Ethan Baker started the day on Friday for Mount Ayr by finishing 22nd in the high jump by clearing 5’ 8”.  Kody Gillaspie of Westwood, Sloan won the event with a jump of 6’ 7”.

Cade Lambson spun the discus 154’ 4” in the preliminaries, but Dan Kruger of West Hancock held the lead going into the finals with a toss of 156’ 11”.   Lambson unleashed a 158’ 1” throw on his second attempt in the finals and Dan Kruger was unable to improve on his preliminary throw giving the Raider sophomore the state title.  Mount Ayr Community’s 18 points placed them in a tie with Earlham for 13th place in the  1-A standings.

Madrid won the team title with 47.5 points and Pride of Iowa  conference  and District 9 champion Pleasantville finished sixth with 28 points.

The top 10 1-A teams were as follows:  1. Madrid--47.5,  2. West Lyon--40,  3. Lisbon--39,   3. Alburnett--39,  5. Griswold--30,  6. Pleasantville--28,  6. West Hancock--28,  8. Belmond-Klemme--26,  9.  Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn--23,  9. Southern Cal--23.
