Zach Robinson sees action in Shrine Bowl

Zach Robinson became the fourth fourth Mount Ayr Community Raider to play in the Iowa Shrine Bowl as he was a wide receiver on this year’s all-star South squad.

The North squad scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to edge the South 21-17 in the July 25 game played in Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

Robinson was on the field a lot for the South team, playing wide receiver and being a member of some of the special teams.  He was the intended receiver on just a few occasions, but he looked like he was having a great time playing and talking with his teammates.

The South scored first in the game as the North fumbled the opening kickoff and the South recovered on the 40-yard line.  Three plays later Pella Christian’s Eli Groenendyk hauled in a 34-yard pass from Tipton’s Adam Pelzer to give the South a 7-0 lead.

Seth Streeter of Prairie City-Monroe booted a 31-yard field goal late in the first quarter to increase the South lead to 10-0.

The second quarter was a defensive struggle with the North missing field goals allowing the South to keep its 10-0 lead heading into the half-time break.  The 60-member all-star cheerleading squad entertained the crowd with an outstanding routine as part of the half-time activities.

Raider Daniel Showalter was also presented his IFCA scholarship during the halftime ceremonies.

Both offenses continued to struggle in the third quarter with neither team scoring, keeping the South clinging to a 10-0 advantage.  The North’s punter, Brent Van Sloten, continued to boom punts inside the 20, forcing the South to start drives with poor field position.

The South fumbled the ball early in the fourth quarter giving the North excellent field position inside the South 20-yard line.  Kyle Schuett scored from one yard out cutting the lead to 10-7 with just over 12 minutes left in the game.  Two minutes later Josh Lenz  fielded a South punt and returned it 58 yards for the second North score of the night.

The South finally got their offense on track and when quarterback Jack Flaherty punched over from the one the South regained the lead 17-14 with 2:32 left in the game.

The North did not waste any time countering the score as North  quarterback Wyatt Suess hit the Iowa State recruit Josh Lenz with a pass over the middle and he did the rest racing 54 yards for the game winning TD.

Lenz was the North offensive MVP and the North’s defensive MVP was Brett Bengen of Gladbrook-Reinback.  Eli Groenendyk earned the South offensive award and Ankeny’s Ross Naylor was the defensive MVP for the South squad.

“I had a great time this past week,” said Zach Robinson.  “It would have been better if the South had won, but it still was a rewarding experience.”

“The trip to the Shriner’s hospital to see the kids we were playing for was a special day,” Zach continued.  “I got to make a lot of new friends and I want to thank my family, my coaches and the Mount Ayr community for making it all possible.”

Mediacom will show the complete Shrine Bowl game on Channel 22 three times in the upcoming weeks.  Fans can view the game on Saturday, August 2 at 7 p.m., Saturday, August 9 at 7 p.m., and Friday, August 15 and 6 p.m.

Raiderettes stopped in regional softball semifinal

Mount Ayr Community’s Raiderettes bowed out of the Class 2A regional softball tournament in the semifinal round Monday night to draw their season to a close.

In the final week they closed out the Pride of Iowa conference season at 11-5 with a 15-11 loss to Martensdale-St. Mary’s on July 7.

In tournament action they got past Central Decatur 2-1 on July 10, defeated Wayne 1-0 on July 11 and then fell to number two rated Bondurant-Farrar 4-0 on July 13.

The girls finished their season with a 22-8 season record.

Martensdale-St. Mary’s 15,   Mount Ayr Community 11

Mount Ayr Community lost its final POI conference softball game 15-11 to Martensdale-St. Marys in Martensdale on July 7.

“It was such  an unbelievable hitting game,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “We scored 11 runs and hit the ball hard every inning, but just could not come back from that eight-run deficit.”

Hailey Sweet doubled leading off the bottom of the first and scored the first run for the Blue Devils giving them a lead that they would not relinquish for the entire game.  Martensdale wore out the area between third and short as they got seven hits and scored seven times in the second inning increasing the lead to 8-0 going into the third.

The Raiderettes did not roll over as they put up a three spot in the top of the third.  Bailey Myer was safe on a fielder’s choice, moved up on Erica Kemery’s single and scored on sister Tess Myer’s hit.  Kemery scored on Pennington’s groundout and Tess  Myer came home when Jensen Stewart’s hot shot got into left field making the score 8-3.

The Raiderettes’ Katelyn Sobotka singled in the fourth, but was gunned downed at the plate trying to score on Bailey Myer’s sacrifice fly, which brought the top of the fourth to a close.

Tess Myer was hit by a pitch and swept around the sacks scoring from first base on Becca Pennington’s double.  Pennington scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 8-5 after 4 1/2 innings of play.

The Blue Devils came back to score five times in their half of the fifth, giving them another 8 run advantage at 13-5. Martensdale loaded the bases with one out and Emma Michels singled to score one and kept the bases full of Blue Devils.  A throwing error allowed the second run to score and Meghan Halverson doubled to the fence with two out clearing the bases for the home team.

The Raiderettes started the sixth with booming doubles by Tiffany Wimer and Jordyn Grose making it 13-6.  Megan Streyffeler robbed Bailey Myer of extra bases when she hauled in her long drive to deep center for the first out.  Erica Kemery singled driving in Grose and she scored on Becca Pennington’s hit which ended Brittney Kubik’s night as the Blue Devil pitcher.  Emma Michels replaced Kubik and fanned Jensen Stewart to end the inning with score at 13-8.

The Raiderettes committed a couple of crucial errors in the bottom of the sixth allowing the Blue Devils to build the lead back to 15-8 heading into the last inning.

Chelsey Hosfield, Katelyn Sobotka, Jordyn Grose and Erica Kemery all got hits as Mount Ayr Community refused to go quietly in the seventh.  The girls scored three more times before Emma Michels got Tess Myer to line out to end the game with M-SM getting a hard fought 15-11 win.

Erin Budach took the loss for the Raiderettes.  She fanned seven, walked four and gave up 16 hits in six innings on Tuesday.

Becca Pennington had four  RBI’s and Jordyn Grose drove in a pair of runs for Mount Ayr Community.  Erica Kemery had three hits, Becca Pennington, Jensen Stewart, Katelyn Sobotka, Tiffany Wimer and Jordyn Grose collected two each and Chelsey Hosfield and Tess Myer both had one.

The Raiderettes closed the POI season with an 11-5 record and dropped to 20-7 overall for the 2009 season.

Mount Ayr  Community 2,   Central Decatur 1

Mount Ayr Community won their opening Class 2A softball tournament game 2-1 over Central Decatur in Mount Ayr on July 10.

“Both pitchers were outstanding tonight,” stated coach Josh Vanderflught.  “We made some great plays on defense and Erica Kemery delivered a big hit  which helped us get a great win.”

Mount Ayr Commuity threatened to get on the board first in the top of third.  Bailey Myer reached first when the Central Decatur catcher mishandled a third strike.  Erica Kemery got an infield single putting runners at first and second with two outs.  Tess Myer hit a ground ball to short, but Bailey  Myer was unable to avoid contact with the shortstop and was called out for interference ending the top of the third.

Mount Ayr Community scored first by tallying one run in the top of the fourth.  Becca Pennington reached first on an error and scored when the Lady Cards misplayed Chelsey Hosfield’s bunt, giving the Raiderettes a 1-0 lead.

Central Decatur’s Taylor Smith walked leading off the bottom of the fourth, but became the third out of the inning when she tried a delayed steal in trying to advance to third.

Mount Ayr Community got the leadoff hitter on in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Taylor Smith was able to pitch out of tough situations in both frames keeping the score at 1-0 through six complete innings.

The Raiderettes scored a very important run in the top of the seventh inning.  Jordyn Grose lined a single to center with one out  in the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bailey Myer was retired on a ground ball back to Smith with Grose moving up to third.  Erica Kemery lined a solid single to right driving in Grose giving the Raiderettes a 2-0 lead.

Taylor Smith singled to left field to start the bottom of the seventh for the Lady Cards.  Paige Toney lined a shot off Erin Budach’s glove which put runners at first and third with nobody out.  Tessa Bettin grounded out scoring Smith making the score 2-1.  Boswell grounded out to second and Paige Toney moved to third.  Erin Budach was then able to get the final out on a slow grounder to Erica Kemery, securing a 2-1 victory.

Budach gave up only two hits, both in the seventh inning, and only one ball reached the outfield grass.  She walked three and fanned two in earning her 20th win of the season.  The Raiderette infield had 17 assists without an error against Central Decatur.

The Raiderettes now have a 21-7 season record.

Mount Ayr Community 1, Wayne 0

Mount Ayr Community took another step down the tournament trail with a 1-0 win over Wayne Community in Leon on July 11.  “This game was much like last night’s as pitching dominated the contest,” commented a pleased coach Josh Vanderflught.  “Again Erin Budach pitched well and our defense was nearly flawless which turned out to be the difference.”

Wayne started off the top of the first with Syerra Niday getting a single, but Erin Budach fanned the next two hitters and Chelsey Hosfield fired to first getting the Wayne runner caught in a rundown in which Becca Pennington applied the tag ending the first.

Jensen Stewart walked to lead off the bottom of the first and stole second base, but Cassandra Darrah fanned the next three hitters leaving Jensen stranded at second.

Jordan Grose lined a hard shot to left to lead off the third and reached second when the ball went off the left fielder’s glove and rolled toward center field.  It looked like she was going to suffer the same fate as Jensen as Darrah fanned Bailey Myer and got Erica Kemery to pop to third.  Tess Myer hit a hard grounder to short which bounced off the shortstop’s glove and rolled into the grass behind second base, allowing Jordyn to race home with what would be the only run of the game.

Jensen Stewart led off the bottom of the fourth with a solid single to left and stole second base for the second time in the game.  Darrah struck out Chelsey Hosfield for the first out in the inning.  A Darrah pitch popped out of the Wayne catcher’s glove and Jensen tried to advance to third, but was called out by the umpire for the second out.  Sobotka fanned ending the fourth.

Wayne had its best chance to score in the top of the fifth.  Rhodes singled to short  left field and hustled toward second attempting to stretch the hit into a double.  Becca Pennington’s throw was wide and went into right field where Bailey Myer picked up the errant ball and fired a strike to sister Tess Myer to cut down Rhodes trying to advance to third for out number two.  Kunzie grounded out to Eric Kemery and the teams headed to the bottom of the fifth with Mount Ayr still clinging to a 1-0 lead.

Bailey Myer collected the final Raiderette hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth and stole second base, but Darrah struck out the side so the Raiderettes failed to score.

Wayne got a runner to third base with two out in the top of the sixth, but Becca Pennington fielded Cassandra Darrah’s hard grounder cleanly and threw to Jensen Stewart to end the Falcon threat in the sixth.

Erin Budach got the first two out in the top of the seventh before Wayne had one final gasp.  Holt walked, but Jordyn Grose made a nice running catch of a hard line drive  in center field to secure the Raiderettes’ tournament win.

Budach struck out seven hitters, walked four and gave up just two hits in earning her 21. victory of the season.  Cassandra Darrah struck out 14, walked one and surrendered three hits in taking the loss for the Falcons.

Mount Ayr Community is now 22-7 on the year.

Bondurant-Farrar 4, Mount Ayr Community 0

The Raiderettes’ bid for another tournament win fell short as Mount Ayr lost 4-0 to the #2 ranked Bondurant-Farrar Lady Jays in Truro on July 13.

“They made plays and we did not make them tonight,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “We hit the ball hard several times, but they were ‘at-em’ balls and they made only one error in the game.”

Bondurant-Farrar threatened in the first as Trisha Rooney was safe on error, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Becca Pennington fielded Dacia Miller’s grounder and threw to Chelsey Hosfield, nailing Rooney at the plate.

Bondurant-Farrar got on the board first in the third inning.  Sami Harges walked and moved to third on a single by catcher Hannah Baker.  A costly error allowed both runners to score putting the Lady Jays ahead 2-0.

The visitors left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth as Erin Budach was able to get Baker to pop out to Becca Pennington keeping the score at 2-0.

Jensen Stewart became the second Raiderette to reach base in the game as she was safe when the shortstop was unable to handle her hot shot in the hole between short  and third.  Miller got Chelsey Hosfield to fly to right to end the bottom of the fourth.

The Lady Jays scored their final two runs in the top of the sixth after there were two outs and nobody on.  Harges and Miller got base hits and then a line shot went off Tess Myer’s glove and throwing hand driving in run number three and another hit brought home the final one making the score 4-0 in favor of the Lady Jays.

Becca Pennington led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit to short right and then Jensen Stewart  sent the Bondurant centerfielder back to the center field fence to haul in her long drive for the first out.  Chelsey Hosfield singled putting runners at first and second.  Katelyn Sobotka fouled off several pitches before she finally grounded back to Miller for the second out.  Tiffany Wimer hit a ball out to deep left that was caught for the final out of the game and the Raiderettes suffered a 4-0 loss.

Erin Budach took the loss for the Raiderettes and Dacia Miller was the winning pitcher for Bondurant-Farrar.  Budach gave up six hits,  fanned three and uncharacteristically walked six in seven innings.  Miller surrendered two hits, struck out six and walked one.  The Raiderettes finished the season with a 22-8 win-loss record.

Mount Ayr Community 18, Lamoni 8

The Raiders out slugged the Lamoni Demons to get a non-conference win 18-8 on Wednesday, July 1 in Mount Ayr.

“The ball was really carrying today, said coach Thad Streit.  “Korey Beaman had big day for us in the win.”

The win gives Mount Ayr Community an even 10-10 mark for the year.

Ryan England earned the pitching win, giving up eight runs, seven hits, fanning four and walking one in five innings of work.

Lamoni took the lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer off the bat of catcher Clint Foster.  The Raiders countered by scoring five times in the bottom of the first.  Chad Starlin singled, Christian Overholtzer walked, Korey Beaman singled driving in Starlin and Ryan England followed with a three-run homer for the Raiders.  Daniel Showalter singled, Dustin Pritchett doubled and Matt Sobotka closed out the big first inning with another single making it 5-2 in favor of the home team.  The Raiders scored three in the second as Korey Beaman connected on a long three-run shot to left center, increasing the lead to 8-2.  Greg Hensley drew the Demons closer as he lifted a two-run homer out of the park in the top of the third.

Mount Ayr Community increased the lead to 12-4 as they scored four times in the bottom half of the fourth.  A walk to Overholtzer and a single by Beaman, got things started for the Raiders.  Daniel Showalter doubled and Dustin Pritchett sent a ball on a sub orbital flight to center for a three-run homer.

Clint Foster connected for his second homer of the game and Rhett Boles also went deep to cut the lead to 12-8 heading into the bottom of the fifth.  Mount Ayr Community got four hits, Lamoni made two errors, nine Raiders came to the plate and six scored, ending the game via the 10-run rule.

Nodaway Valley 7, Mount Ayr Community 5

Nodaway Valley used two big innings to beat the Mount Ayr Community Raiders 7-5 in a POI  conference game in Greenfield on July 2.

“We had several opportunities to score,”  said coach Thad Streit.  “We just could not get a couple of big hits when we really needed them.”

David Showalter was charged with mound defeat as he gave up five hits, fanned five, walked three and hit one batter in 4 2/3 innings of work.  Michael Bentley relieved in the fifth and struck out one and walked none in the final 1 1/3 innings.

The Wolverines scored four in the bottom of the first getting hits from Ty Brown, Nick Fox and Paul Ehrsam.  Daniel Showalter singled and scored in the top of the second on a wild pitch making the score 4-1.

Raiderettes win seven straight in busy week

Seven wins in a row were added by the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes as they hit a stride in a busy week of action June 24-29.

The girls won five conference games against Central Decatur, Bedford, Interstate 35, and two against Corning while picking up wins over Shenandoah and Stanton in the Bedford Classic.

The Raiderettes are now 10-3 in the Pride of Iowa conference and 16-5 overall.

Mount Ayr Community 4, Central Decatur 3

Mount Ayr Community rallied in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-3 POI conference win from the visiting Central Decatur Cardinals on Wednesday, June 24.

“We struggled in the first inning,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “Thankfully, we played the last six innings a lot better and were able to get a quality win.”  Erin Budach pitched a six-hitter, fanning seven and walking three batters in the seven-inning game.

Central Decatur scored three runs in the top of the first on hits from Brittany Binning and Tessa Bettin and two crucial Raiderette errors.  Taylor Smith held the Raiderettes in check until the bottom of the fifth.

Tiffany Wimer was safe on an error and move up on Erica Kemery’s third single of the game.  Wimer scored on a groundout and Kemery on a wild pitch making the score 3-2.  Jensen Stewart drove in Becca Pennington with the tying run later in the frame, making the score 3-3 going into the sixth.

A nice stop by Erica Kemery kept the Cards from taking the lead in the top of the frame.  Katelyn Sobotka and Tiffany Wimer singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth.  Katelyn Sobotka scored the go ahead run when the Central Decatur second baseman did not handle Tess Myer’s grounder.

The Lady Cards got two runners on in the top of the seventh, but Erin Budach got Tessa Bettin to ground out and fanned Brianna Durrow to end the game.

The win gives Mount Ayr Community a 6-3 POI record and a 10-5 overall mark for the 2009 season.

Erica Kemery was 3-3 for the Raiderettes and Jensen Stewart was 2-2 with an RBI to pace the Raiderette offense on Wednesday.

Mount  Ayr Community 13, Bedford 0

Mount Ayr Community picked up their seventh POI conference win with 13-0 victory  over Bedford  in Bedford on Thursday, June 25.

Erin Budach notched the pitching win allowing two hits, fanning five and walking four in the five-inning contest.

“We got off to a great start,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “We weren’t as sharp as we will need to be to handle I-35 tomorrow.”

The Raiderettes scored six times on five hits as 11 batters came to the plate in the top of the first.

Tess Myer delivered a bases clearing double to help Mount Ayr increase the lead to 11-0 after three frames.

The visitors scored their final two in the fifth on a walk and singles by Chelsey Hosfield and Jordyn Grose.

The Raiderettes pounded out 11 hits with Erica Kemery, Tess Myer, Becca Pennington and Chelsey Hosfield each getting two each.  Bailey Myer, Katelyn Sobotka, and Jordyn Grose each added one hit to the attack.  Tess Myer topped the team in RBI’s with four.

Mount Ayr Community 4, Interstate 35 1

Mount Ayr Community defeated Interstate 35 4-1 in Truro on Friday, June 26.

“It has been quite awhile since a Raiderette softball team has walked off this field with a win,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “We made some great plays, but they are the kinds of plays you have to make if you want to beat a good team like the Roadrunners.”

The Raiderettes grabbed the lead with benefit of a Roadrunner error, scoring a run in the third.  They expanded the advantage to 2-0 on Tiffany Wimer’s fifth inning double and another Roadrunner miscue.

The defense came to the forefront in the bottom of the sixth as Interstate 35 loaded the bases with no one out.  Tiffany Wimer hauled in a long sac fly and fired the ball to Tess Myer and the Raiderettes were able to get the Roadrunner baserunner in a rundown between second and third and retire her for the second out of the inning.  Becca Pennington flipped to Tess Myer for a force out to end the Interstate 35 threat in the sixth when only one runner dented the plate.  The Raiderettes speed bothered the I-35 fielders in the top of the seventh as the home team committed three errors in the inning allowing Mount Ayr Community to get two important insurance runs to have a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

A couple of nice plays by shortstop Becca Pennington and a pop up to Jensen Stewart sent the Roadrunners down in order in the seventh, giving the Raiderettes the 4-1 POI victory.

Erin Budach struck out six, walked one and gave up four hits in the seven -inning win.  Tess Myer, Tiffany Wimer and Erica Kemery each had one hit for the visitors.

Mount Ayr Community 3, Shenandoah 1

Mount Ayr opened Pool Play in the Bedford Classic with a 3-1 win over a very good Shenandoah Fillie team in Bedford on Saturday, June 27.

“We hit the ball well and perhaps should have scored more than we did,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.  “It was still good to start the day with a win.”

Becca Pennington hit a 200 foot triple driving in the first two Raiderette runs in the third and Tess Myer drove in the final run with her third hit of the game in the fifth.

The Raiderettes allowed an unearned run in the top of the sixth cutting the lead to 3-1.  Shenandoah failed to score in the final frame and the Raiderettes had their 13th victory of the season against five losses.

Erin Budach tossed a two-hitter to get the pitching win.  She walked two, fanned two and allowed no earned runs in the game.

Tess Myer had three hits and Bailey Myer, Tiffany Wimer, Becca Pennington, Jensen Stewart and Katelyn Sobotka one each in the Raiderette eight-hit attack.
