Caitlin Giles and Joey Taylor advanced as individuals from the regional and sectional meets held for the Raider and Raidette golfers this past week.
Both will play in district meets to try to earn a trip to the state tournament.
In addition, the Raiders won and Raiderettes lost in a match with Bedford to close out the regular season.
Girl regional meet
Mount Ayr Community hosted the 1A district golf tournament at the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club Course on Monday, May 14.
“You could not ask for better weather,” admitted coach Scott Giles. “We did not have enough golfers to post a team score, but Caitlin Giles shot a fine round of 46 and 46 for a 92 total to qualify for the regional next Monday at Dunlap.”
Allison Wallace got off to a rocky start with an 84, but played well on the second nine for a 62 to record a 146. Holly Karr played well in her first big tourney shooting a 69 and a 74 for 143 total.
Corning took the team title firing a 409 with Nishnabotna also qualifying for the regional with a 481.
The remaining team scores: Villisca--485, Lamoni--504 and East Mills--545.
Corning had two individual qualifiers, medalist Kaleigh Westlake (90) and third place finisher Bailey Heaton (91). Amber Miller of Nishnabotna also qualified with a round of 90 and Lamoni’s Sydnee Smith was the final regional individual participant with a 92.
Boys sectional meet
Mount Ayr Community boys golf team played their best round of the season in the 1A sectional at Pleasantville on May 11.
Mount Ayr Community just missed qualifying as they finished fourth with an 18-hole total of 375. The host Trojans won the team title with a 342. Melcher Dallas was second with a 347 and Mormon Trail was the final team qualifier with a score of 364.
The remaining team scores included Van Meter--377, Wayne--401 and Lamoni--440.The Raiders Joey Taylor qualified as an individual as he won a playoff to finish third with an 85.
Taylor will play at the district meet at Anita on May 18 for a chance to qualify for the state meet.
Trent Kennedy of Melcher was the medalist with a 74 and Pleasantville’s Jordan Warner was runner-up with an 82. Trevor Pollock of Mormon Trail was the final qualifier with an 85.
The remaining Raider scores: Casey Paxson--89, Jake Ricker--98, Connnor Giles-103, Quency Vos--105, Dylan Doman--110. “These guys worked hard and became better players as the season progressed,” said coach Scott Giles. “I am pleased with their committment to improving their game this year.”
Meet with Bedford
Mount Ayr Community boys defeated Bedford, 217-198 and the Lady Bulldogs edged the Raiderettes 274-271 in Bedford on May 8 to close out the regular season. Joey Taylor and Casey Paxson finished 1-2 in the match to take medalist and runner-up honors. Taylor turned in a 45 and Casey carded a 48. Jake Ricker shot a 49, Quency Vos a 56, Dylan Doman a 57 and Connor Giles for the Raiders.
Demi Derry paced the winning Bulldog unit taking medalist honors with a 50. Caitlin Giled topped the Raiderettes with a 55 for the second best round of the day.
