Coach Brad Elliott was especially pleased with the performances of his upperclassmen.  “All five seniors qualified for the state meet, which is a first since Coach Wallace and I joined in 2009,” he said.  “ It is also the most events ever qualified for the Raiders in Class 2A competition. (Previous 2A state qualifier total was eight events in 2000).

Elliott also cited the Raiders’ total team effort. “From seniors to freshmen the Raider squad performed superbly under wind rain and cool conditions,” he said. “I was so impressed with how the guys put it all out there for each other. We had great support from our athletes who were not competing that goes to show you how well this group works together. It has been a short but amazing season for us with this group, they are looking forward to competing on the blue oval starting this Thursday.”

Joe Ricker’s discus toss of 130’2” was good for third place but left him just short of qualifying.

The 4x800 relay team continues to move up the ranks to second place on the MACHS all-time list with their state qualifying performance.

“One of the most exciting races” in coach Elliott’s words, “came in the 1600 medley race.” Kyle Dolecheck pulled out first place in the “final 80 meters as he fought off St. Albert to qualify for the state meet,” continued coach Elliott.

Raiders run away with POI crown, tune up for districts at Nodaway Valley

The Raiders dominated the Pride of Iowa conference track meet and prepared for district action with a second-place finish at the Nodaway Valley Invitational.

Pride of Iowa

It was “a spectacular night for the Raiders,” stated coach Brad Elliott as the Mount Ayr boys claimed their third straight conference team title in the 2013 Pride of Iowa track meet held Tuesday night, April 30 at Truro.

Besides the team title, the meet featured several highlights, not the least of which was a new MACHS and conference meet record high jump by Raider senior Braydee Poore. Poore’s first-place leap of 6’9” easily eclipsed his old record of 6’7” set earlier this season at the ISU Classic, an indoor meet. Poore also claimed  gold in the 110M Hurdles.

Noah Larsen scored two golds for his wins in the 3200M and 1600M runs. His 1600M time of 4:48 places him sixth all-time in MACHS history.

Shane Swank earned a silver in the 400M hurdles, and his time of 58.54 moved him into eighth place all-time.

The 4x400 relay team of Kyle Dolecheck, Jack Jones, Erik Freed and Jacob Sobotka also claimed gold and moved to seventh on the all-time list.

Coaches Elliott and Kurt Wallace were very pleased with their team.  “We had a school record, season bests and personal bests in nearly every event, something you don’t see very often or from an entire team,” he said.

According to Mount Ayr activities director Delwyn Showalter, the 2013 conference title is the 14th championship for the Raider track team since the inception of the Pride of Iowa Conference.

The Raiders compete in the 2A district meet tonight (May 9) at Greenfield.

Nodaway Valley

The boys ran exceptionally well at the Nodaway Valley Invitational held at Greenfield May 6. This was a tune-up meet for the 2A district showdown to be held on the same track tonight (Thursday).

According to coach Brad Elliott, things got off to a great start with all of the field event athletes earning personal best performances. Freshmen Jed McCreary and Lincoln Lutrick threw well in the shot put with McCreary taking fourth place.

The 4x800 team of Kyle Dolecheck, Heath Evans, Erik Freed and Noah Larsen ran an outstanding time of 8:26.4, moving them to third on the all-time MACHS list.  Dolecheck would come back and run a season best in the 400 meters,  placing him sixth on the all-time list and ranked first in the district pairings.

Cody Stackhouse debuted in the 200 meters with a personal best time to take home the bronze. Shane Swank ran another personal best in the 400 meters, cutting his time to 58.1 and moving him to seveth on the all-time list.

The sprint medley team ran a season best time under a fine anchor by Noah Larsen to take the gold. The 4x100 team ran a consistent race to come in second at the tape. To cap off the night the 4x400 team of Kyle Dolecheck, Jack Jones, Erik Freed and Jacob Sobotka ran a nice time on their way to a dominating victory and the second fastest time recorded by the Raiders this season.

“The weather was beautiful and the guys came prepared to work,” said Elliott. “We didn’t fill every event so there are some points we expect to pick up. We wanted to save some performances for the district meet.”

Raiders tie school record at Drake, place 4th at Bedford

The Raider track team saw an “event-packed end to the week,” in coach Brad Elliott’s words, as they  participated at both the Drake Relays on Thursday, April 25, in Des Moines and at Bedford on Friday, April 26 in the Bedford Invitational.

Drake Relays

Senior Braydee Poore made his appearance Thursday, April 26 in the high jump at the Drake Relays. Poore ceded second place to Jared Seay of Johnston in a tie-breaker at 6’7,” a leap that tied his own school record.

“Braydee made a valiant effort to improve on his 2012 Drake Relays silver,” said coach Brad Elliott. “He sailed over the opening heights with ease, missing only his first attempt at 6’7” before going after a personal best attempt and a shot for gold at 6’8”.

Jeff Giannettino, Class 2A competitor took the gold clearing 6’8,” the only competitor to clear that height, according to coach Elliott.

On Friday, April 26 the 4x100 relay team of Erik Freed, Cody Stackhouse, Jacob Sobotka and Grant Staats finished 52nd with a time of 44.93. The quartet turned in their season-best time and recorded the fastest time in school history with a hand-timed conversion to tie the current school record of 44.7 held by Scott Rumple, Landry McGahuey, Travis Hartman and Jeremy Burmeister.

Coach Elliott commented on the matchup for the relay team. “We were matched up with district competitors Tri-Center Neola and Council Bluffs St. Albert, which gave us a great look at how our district match-up is building,” he said. “It was an extremely fast race as the Raiders ran all alone in lane 7. As the stagger evened out by leg 3, Tri-Center had the slight advantage and St. Albert had a step on us. Sophomore Stackhouse ran a great anchor leg to close the gap on Tri-Center and also pass St. Albert at the tape. It was nice to see the boys do well under the pressure of a big meet.”

Bedford Invitational

The Raider track team took fourth place at the Bedford Invitational, Friday, April 26 despite missing 12 teammates with schedule conflicts.

Coach Elliott noted, “Noah Larsen was the highlight of the night for the Raiders as he ran his personal best in the open 800, winning in dominating form.”

Several Raiders scored second-place finishes individually and in team relays including Kyle Dolecheck in his debut in the 400M; the 4x800 team of Dolecheck, Jack Jones, Shane Swank and Larsen; Joe Ricker in the discus and Shane Swank in the 400M hurdles.

Season stats released for Raider basketball

Season stats have been compiled for the 2012-2013 Raider basketball season.

The Raiders posted a season record of 16-8 and reached the district finals in post-season play.

Senior Braydee Poore broke the 1,000 point mark for his career and ended with 1,057 points, good for second on the all-time career scoring list behind Drew Larsen’s 1,111.

Poore was named to the Class 1A all-state third team by the Iowa Newspaper Association, and he and fellow senior Jake Still were unanimous first-team all Pride of Iowa conference selections.

Poore and Still were also named to the KAAN Radio 2013 All-Star team.

The Raiders were led by a talented group of seniors. This senior class accounted for 85 percent of total points, 84 percent of total rebounds, 90 percent of total assists, 81 percent of total steals and 92 percent of all blocked shots.

Still led the Raiders in several categories: scoring (409 points), free throws (62), scoring average (17.8 points/game), defensive rebounds (139), total rebounds (178), rebounding average (7.7 rebounds /game) and blocked shots (33).

Poore was second in scoring (375), free throws (54), scoring average (15.6 points/game) and defensive rebounds (107).

Still and Poore paced the Raiders with 85 and 84 assists respectively.

Another senior, Johnathan Triggs, led the team in offensive rebounds (72) and was second in total rebounds (153) and rebound average (6.7 rebounds/game) and third in scoring (205) and scoring average (8.9 points/game).

Still, Poore and fellow senior Dylan Doman led the team in steals. Still recorded 45 while Poore and Doman had 44 each.

One underclassman, junior Jack Jones, saw action in all 24 games. Jones finished the season fifth in scoring (93). Other Raiders seeing action in all 24 games included Doman, Poore and senior Austin Quick. Still and Triggs played in 23 games. Junior Casey Paxson played in 20.

Heading into next season, several Raiders will need to step up to fill the void left by the graduated seniors. However, Jones and Paxson saw action in the majority of games, and junior Jake Sobotka is expected to see more quality playing time next year after being hampered by a left-over football injury this season. In addition, freshman Jed McCreary finished with 38 points and 41 rebounds in his 16 game appearances.

Other underclassmen saw quality playing time, including sophomore Lincoln Martin (15 games), juniors Weston Schnoor (11) and Hagan Willis (11) and sophomore Riley Weehler (11). Junior Zach Vanderflught played in six games.

Raiders compete in ISU Classic, Poore sets high jump record

The cold and snowy start to the 2013 season had little effect on the Raiders as they took to the track, Tuesday, March 12 in Ames at the ISU Classic.

Senior Braydee Poore was “on fire at the season opener,” according to coach Brad Elliott, as he won the event and broke the Raider high jump record with his leap of 6’ 7”. Last season Poore had tied the old record of 6’6” set by Casey Smith in 1998.

“Its an amazing accomplishment to win the ISU classic,” said Elliott.  “It’s an all-comers meet so you have the best 4A-1A athletes competing for the top spot. To my knowledge Mount Ayr has never had an athlete take the gold at this meet, which adds to the excitement.”

The indoor meet gave the Raiders their first taste of competition heading into the 2013 season.

“This is an early meet for the guys coming from their winter sports so we went in to this meet just looking to get some track time,” added coach Elliott. “I am very pleased with the way things looked due to our limited time outdoors so far this season.”

Golf squads short on numbers, long on talent

As Raider/Raiderette golf season approaches, coach Scott Giles looks for some good things out of his squads.

Senior Caitlin Giles, the lone Raiderette, has shown steady improvement in her game and is considered to be a contender for the  conference medalist.

The Raider squad consists of senior Dylan Doman, juniors Casey Paxson and  Quency Vos and sophomores Connor Giles, Jake Ricker and Nathan Roberts. All six Raiders were out last season and continue to improve their game.

While  several of the golfers have individual goals, as a team, coach Giles looks to place in the top five in the  conference tournament and move out of sectionals into district play.

Diagonal season stats revealed

Season stats have been released for the 2012-13 Diagonal Maroon basketball team. (These numbers do not include the first-round district game against Mount Ayr.)

Freshman Jacob Taylor led the Maroons in a number of categories. He scored 201 points, including 25 three-pointers, and recorded 69 assists, 83 steals and 26 blocked shots in a banner year.

The most individual points scored in a single game were 22, tallied by both sophomore Blake Butler against Mormon Trail on January 11 and by Taylor against East Union November 11.

Taylor and fellow freshman Levi Jarred hit three 3-pointers in a single game to lead the Maroons in that category. Taylor hit his in the East Union game where he scored 22. Jarred hit his three’s against Lenox on January 21.

Junior Ryan Parrott grabbed a team-high 156 rebounds, followed closely by senior Heath Evans with 148. Parrott recorded a single-game high of 18 boards against Twin Cedars on January 15 in the conference tournament.

Single-game high marks included Taylor with seven assists against Mormon Trail on January 11. Both Haidsiak and Taylor recorded seven steals in a single game. Haidsiak’s steals came in the November 27 East Union game while Taylor’s came in the Mormon Trail game. Parrott blocked four shots in the Twin Cedars game. Taylor also rejected four shots in the Mormon Trail game.

The Maroons graduate only two seniors, Shad Haidsiak and Heath Evans, from this year’s team that ended with an 11-11 regular-season record. While the two seniors ended up as the second and third top scorers respectively, the future looks very bright for Diagonal basketball.

In Taylor, Parrott and Butler, three of the team’s top five scorers and rebounders return. Also returning will be freshman Levi Jarred, who scored 72 points this season, and junior Kenny Weaselhead, who grabbed a team-high 103 rebounds a year ago. In addition, four other freshmen saw action in at least 10 games this season: Kade Means (16), Colter Pickering (11) and Gerad Naill (10). Also returning will be juniors Leigh Davis and Bryce Still along with freshman Aaron Darrah.

Raiders close 2012-13 campaign with district semi-final loss to Murray

The Mount Ayr Raiders downed a talented Lamoni squad in the second round of district play to advance to the semi-finals against Murray. Unfortunately, the season came to a conclusion after a hard-fought loss to the Mustangs.

Mount Ayr 44, Lamoni 40

The Raiders traveled to Lamoni and beat the  Demons, 44-40, Tuesday, Feb. 19 in the Class 1A District semifinal game. In a contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Mount Ayr “handled everything that was thrown at them,” according to coach Bret Ruggles, “and worked as a team and played with great defensive intensity and discipline.”

The Raiders and Demons traded buckets through the first half with both teams playing tight defense. Mount Ayr had a brief one-point lead in the second quarter, but Lamoni quickly responded, capitalizing on a turnover and a chance at the foul line, ending the half leading 22-18.

The second half saw Lamoni gaining their biggest lead of the night, 30-23, on a seven-point run, but coach Ruggles’ Raiders “weathered the storm,” in his words, and waited for their chance to “be that Storm!”

The Raiders stayed close with Lamoni for 3 1/2 quarters and then got their chance with a 10-0 run that gave Mount Ayr the lead, 33-30. Hitting the three-minute mark, the game was tied 36-36. Lamoni’s Jackson Carr hit a three-point bucket, and Raider Braydee Poore answered with a basket and a make at  the line, giving Mount Ayr the 39-37 lead.

A crucial foul called against Lamoni with 54 seconds remaining put senior Dylan Lame at the line. Lame came through with one to give the Raiders the three-point lead.  Lamoni was forced to foul as the clock ran down and Raiders, Jake Sobotka, Jake Still and Braydee Poore all scored at the line to build a four-point lead. With :01 left in the game, the Demons had possession, but with no chance to tie the game, the Raiders stood back to avoid the foul and ended the game.

Coach Ruggles concluded,”It was a great win that got us into the district championship. It’s nice to be back after four years.”

Senior leaders Jake Still and Braydee Poore shared top stats honors, with Still scoring 17, pulling down nine rebounds, nabbing three steals and recording two blocked shots and one assist. Poore scored 16 points with six rebounds and four assists.

Defensively the Raiders held lead scorers for the Demons, Jeremy Deemer and Jackson Carr, to 11 and eight points, respectively.

Murray 70, Mount Ayr 61

Mount Ayr’s Raiders faced the Murray Mustangs Friday, Feb. 22 at Truro in the District 11 Championship. Mount Ayr fell short of the victory, 70-61, after a hard-fought contest.

“As a spectator you always hope that two teams show up to play and create a great atmosphere” said coach Bret Ruggles, and that was true of both teams in this matchup.

Mount Ayr hit the scoreboard first, followed by seesaw scoring as both teams fought for the early lead. The first quarter ended with Murray leading, 14-13.

In the second quarter the Mustangs outscored the Raiders 8-2 in the first three minutes to stretch their lead to 22-15. After Murray added another bucket to widen the gap to 24-15, Mount Ayr responded with a vengeance. Led by seniors Jake Still and Braydee Poore, the Raiders rallied to chisel Murray’s lead to one point by halftime, 26-25

Fully charged after the strong comeback in the second quarter, Mount Ayr hit three buckets in the first 44 seconds of third-quarter play to quickly take the lead, 31-26. Murray fought back and tied the game at 31. A late third-quarter breakdown in the Raider defense gave Murray the opening they needed. The quarter ended with the Mustangs back on top, 46-37.

By “giving tremendous effort,” in coach Ruggles’ words, the Raiders narrowed the gap to six at one point in the final quarter, but Murray held onto the lead as time ran out to claim the district title.

In one of his best games, senior Jake Still led the team with 27 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal and two blocked shots.Fellow senior Braydee Poore added 16 points and five boards.

Coach Ruggles praised his entire squad. “I am especially proud of this team,” he said, “my five seniors, who did a great job leading the team and my six juniors, two sophomores, one freshman and our alternates. This varsity group really jelled at the right time, and we became a very good team towards the end of the season. We now head into break season, and I look forward to watching my guys on the track or the golf course.”

Mount Ayr downs Diagonal in first-round district play

The Diagonal Maroons were outscored 17-0 in the second quarter and saw their comeback fall short in a 59-45 loss to Mount Ayr in first-round district tournament action Thursday, Feb. 14 in Mount Ayr.

After trailing 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, Diagonal was shut-out in the second period and trailed 34-11 at the half.

The Maroons had a tough time inside during the first half of the game as the Raiders utilized their strength in the lane and controlled the boards, scoring on several easy put-backs. The second quarter saw the Maroons get several good looks at the basket, but they couldn’t get a shot to drop. The Raiders also changed to an aggressive matchup-zone that seemed to cause the Maroons problems.

Diagonal came out of the halftime locker room on fire, and spurred by their fan support, outscored the Raiders 18-15 in the third period and 16-10 in the fourth period. They eventually narrowed the Raider lead to nine points with 2:57 remaining in the game, but the Raiders hit crucial free throws down the stretch to secure the outcome.

“We got a very emotional win tonight against a gritty Diagonal team,”stated coach Bret Ruggles. Ruggles was also very complimentary of the Diagonal squad and acknowledged the tough position of the teams that share classrooms and other sports meeting as rivals on the court. “Diagonal finished their season with a lot of class and tons of great emotion,” he said.

Jake Still led the Raiders by racking up a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Johnathan Triggs and Jake Sobotka added 13 points each. Triggs also grabbed eight rebounds. Braydee Poore had 10 points and eight assists.

Heath Evans’ double-double led the Maroons as he collected 15 points and 11 rebounds to close out his career. Ryan Parrott followed with 12 points and four rebounds as the only other Maroon to hit double figures. Also closing out his career was Shad Haidsiak as he added eight points and four rebounds. Other scoring included Jacob Taylor with four points, one assist, one steal, and one block; Blake Butler with three points, three rebounds, four assists and a steal; and Levi Jarred with three points.

The Maroons connected on 37.5 percent of their field goals, 33 percent from three point range, and 62 percent of their free throws.

Coach Warren was pleased with how his team refused to give up. “We outplayed the Raiders in the second half when it would have been easy to just finish out the game,” he said. “I was proud of the way they battled back. I was also impressed with all our fans who came to the game. It was a sea of Maroon.”

Diagonal finishes the season with an 11-11 record. They will lose Heath Evans and Shad Haidsiak to graduation but will return three starters and several reserves who saw a lot of valuable playing time.

The Raiders advanced to the second-round district game against Lamoni Tuesday night at Lamoni. (Details of the game were unavailable at press time.) Lamoni advanced to the second round with an 81-36 victory over East Union.

Concluding his remarks, coach Ruggles said, “We look forward to continuing district play with our team completely healthy.”

1,000 and counting...

Mount Ayr senior Braydee Poore received congratulations and a commemorative basketball from head coach Brett Ruggles to recognize Poore’s accomplishment of breaking the 1,000-point mark in his career. Poore becomes only the second Raider to in school history to score over 1,000 points. Drew Larsen accomplished the feat in 1993 and went on to score 1,111 career points. Poore had the opportunity to add to his total Tuesday night as the Raiders faced Lamoni in a second-round district game.

Freed advances to state

Four Mount Ayr wrestlers with high hopes and high expectations traveled to the district wrestling tournament at Corning on Saturday, Feb. 9.  Only one of them came home with his dreams fulfilled.

Erik Freed won the 132-pound district championship and will compete in the state tournament beginning this week in Des Moines. A two-time state qualifier, Freed will face sophomore Zach Brunner (32-11) from North Fayette in his first-round match Thursday at 9 a.m.  Freed left no doubt who was the best wrestler in his weight class as he won both his matches by pin.  His first match was a win over Austin Dollen of Griswold.  Freed gave his fans some anxious moments in this match as he got taken down and put on his back.  He was able to recover, however, with a reversal before he put Dollen on his back.  The mat was slapped close to the end of the first period indicating Freed had gotten the pin.

In his second match Freed also came from behind as he pinned Clay Harris of Riverside, Oakland.  In this match he got taken down but quickly escaped and scored his own takedown.  In the second period Freed reversed Harris and was able to get him on his back to get the pin.

The other three Mount Ayr wrestlers were disappointed in their quest for a trip to the state tournament.  At 113 Dawson Knapp placed third.  He lost his first match to Jacob Vogel of Riverside, Oakland.  Vogel put the pressure on Knapp from the very start as he scored a quick takedown. He then repeatedly was able to put Kanpp on his back for near-fall points until he had enough to earn the technical fall midway through the third period.  Knapp looked like a different wrestler in his wrestleback match as he dominated Troy Schwartz of Guthrie Center.  Knapp had a commanding 15-4 lead over Schwartz before he scored the fall in the third period.  There was no wrestleback for second place as Vogel was defeated in the finals.

Grant Staats lost two heartbreakers to end his season.  He lost by fall to Zach Vance of Griswold in his first match.  Staats led 4-2 in this match going into the third period but got caught in a cradle that he could not get out of which resulted in the fall.  His next match against Tucker Patrick of Guthrie Center ended in an overtime loss.  Once again Staats looked like he was on his way to a win as he led going into the third period.  Some questionable officiating in this period allowed Patrick to pull within two and as time expired he scored a reversal on Staats to send the match into overtime.  Patrick got the takedown in the overtime to get the win.

At 160 Shane Swank won his first match over Trevor Hough of Underwood.  Swank got out to a quick five-point lead before Hough pulled within one as they headed into the final period.  Swank built up his lead during this period and won the match 10-6.  Swank lost his second match to Wyatt Lewis of St. Albert.  Swank trailed most of the way in this defensive match and was out-pointed 5-2.  This put Swank in a wrestle back for second against Tyler Hein of Panorama.  Swank got the takedown and was attempting to tilt Hein when he got caught in a headlock and was pinned.

Comeback falls short as Raiderette season ends

The Raiderettes 2012-13 basketball schedule came to a close in their first post-season game as Mount Ayr fell to Central Decatur, 56-43, Saturday, Feb. 9 at Leon.

The Raiderettes stayed with the Cardinals in the first quarter of the game, but a huge Central Decatur 16-point run went unanswered by the Raiderettes in the second quarter and left  Mount Ayr trailing by 20 points at halftime. The Raiderettes battled back coming out of the locker room to hold the Cardinals to six points and closed the gap to 36-45 with CD still holding the lead in the third quarter. As the clock wound down, Mount Ayr was unable to catch the Cardinals and Central Decatur claimed the game and will advance in post-season play.

“We launched a heck of a comeback, played hard and knocked down some big shots,” commented coach Thad Streit, “but the early deficit was too big to overcome tonight.”

Seniors led the way in their final high school game with Caitlin Giles scoring 13 points and Taylor Still recording 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Most assists honors were shared by Paige Daughton and Ashton Johnson with three each.

Mount Ayr teams close regular seasons with convincing wins

The Mount Ayr varsity girls and boys closed out their regular season with decisive home wins over Lenox Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Raiderettes 66, Lenox 35

The Raiderettes ended their regular season play with what coach Thad Streit called, “a lot of heart from a team on a mission,” beating the Lenox Tigers, 66-35 Tuesday, Feb. 5.

The Raiderettes took a decisive lead in the first quarter and led 34-20 at halftime. They pushed the lead to 48-27 at the end of three periods on their way to the 31-point final margin.

Solid team effort defined the night as Brooke Rychnovsky did a nice job nailing four out of seven 3-point shots. Taylor Still was team leader overall with 25 points, six rebounds and four steals. Ashton Johnson and Caitlin Giles recorded six and five assists respectively. Giles, Paige Daughton, Logan Wimer and Leah Klejch also did a nice job on the boards.

Senior Raiderettes  recognized after the game were Emily Fox, Morgan Quick, Caitlin Giles, Logan Wimer, Hannah Fletchall and Taylor Still.

Raiders 73, Lenox 43

Starting out a “little flat,” in coach Bret Ruggles’ words, the Raiders trailed at the end of the first quarter, 14-8, but came back to move ahead by four points, 28-24, as they retired to the locker room at halftime. Mount Ayr continued to outscore the Tigers the rest of the game with posts Jake Sobotka, Jed McCreary and John Triggs getting the job done under the basket.

Coach Ruggles remarked, “Our second half play looked more like a team ready to push to the state tournament.”

Leading the way for the Raiders was senior Jake Still with 19 points, four rebounds, five steals, two blocked shots and six assists. Senior Braydee Poore recorded six rebounds.

Senior Raiders honored at parent’s night were Dylan Doman, Austin Quick, Braydee Poore, Jake Still and JohnathanTriggs.

Maroons post 11-10 regular season record

The Diagonal Maroons dropped their last home game of the year to Lamoni but finished the regular season above .500 by downing Essex on the road.

Lamoni 73, Diagonal 40

The Demons just had too much fire power and height for the Maroons to overcome. Lamoni used a big first and fourth quarter in the win as they led 24-10 after one quarter and 36-14 at the half. The Maroons outscored the Demons in the third period to trail 49-30, but could not continue the momentum.

On the night the Maroons were led by senior Heath Evans with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Ryan Parrott had 11 points, five rebounds, one assist and two steals. Senior Shad Haidsiak had seven points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Kenny Weaselhead added four points and two rebounds. Blake Butler had two points, two rebounds, four assists and a steal. Jacob Taylor collected three rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Kade Means added a rebound and a steal.

The Maroons shot 38 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three-point line and an ice-cold 27 percent from the free throw line, hitting only four of 15 shots.

Coach Warren had no explanation for the cold shooting from the line since they shoot free throws every day. “Lamoni is a very athletic team and have a chance to go deep into the post-season tournament if they play like that,” he said.

Diagonal 41, Essex 39

It doesn’t matter how long you lead in a ball game as long as you lead when the clock hits zero. For Diagonal, 16 seconds was long enough. That is what the Diagonal

Maroons did at Essex on Tuesday night as they trailed the entire game until Essex missed two free throws and Shad Haidsiak nailed his two in a 41-39 win.

Diagonal struggled the entire night, both offensively and defensively, but managed to eek out the win. Coach Warren told his team after the game, “Even on your worst nights you have to find a way to win, and that is what we did.”

The Maroons trailed 10-4 after one period and 22-16 at the half. The Maroons cut the lead to 32-29 after three periods and then outscored Essex 12-7 in the final quarter for the win.

Diagonal was led by Jacob Taylor with 10 points, two rebounds, three steals and three assists. Blake Butler had nine points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Heath Evans also had nine points plus 10 rebounds and two steals. Shad Haidsiak added eight points, one rebound and two assists. Ryan Parrott chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and a block.

For the game, Diagonal only managed 44 shots, hitting 13 of them for a cold 29 percent and only 23 percent behind the line making three of 13. The bright spot on the night was the free throw shooting as they went to the line 16 times and converted 12 of them for 75 percent.

The Maroons now stand at 11-10 at the end of the regular season. Up next will be the district tournaments as they travel to Mount Ayr for a showdown with the Raiders.

Four Raiders are champs!

The Mount Ayr Raider wrestlers advanced four to district competition following sectional action at  Greenfield Saturday, Feb. 2.

Mount Ayr surprised some people as they placed third in the tournament behind champion Guthrie Center and runner-up Panorama with four individual champions.

Winning championships were Dawson Knapp at 113, Grant Staats at 126, Erik Freed at 132 and Shane Swank at 160.  These four will be continuing on the tournament trail as they will compete in the district tournament at Corning, February 9.

Dawson Knapp made it look easy in his run to a championship.  After a first-round bye,  he defeated Corben Ameigh of Martensdale St. Marys by a first period fall in the second round.    In the finals Kanpp faced top-seeded Troy Schwartz of Guthrie Center.  Knapp led after the first period 4-2 and 6-2 after the second period.  In the third period he scored eight more points to win the match by the score of 14-4.

Grant Staats also had a first-round bye.  He faced JD Lyman of Nodaway Valley in the semifinals  seeking to avenge an earlier loss to Lyman.  Staats scored a takedown and two near falls in the first period.  After giving up two near falls in the second period, he battled back with a near fall in the third period before scoring the fall toward the end of the match.  In the finals Staats faced top-seeded Tucker Patrick of Guthrie Center.  The match was close for the first two periods with Staats holding a 4-2 lead.  In the third period he scored a reversal and a near fall to gain the victory by the score of 9-2.

Erik Freed was top-seeded and lived up to that expectation as he pinned his way to the championship.    Freed  faced Taylor Mullen of Corning in the first round.  He scored quickly and often as he built up a 12-2 lead over  Mullen in the first minute of the match.  He then mercifully ended the match with a pin.  He had a quick pin over Hunter Simmons of Panorama in the semifinals.  In the finals Freed  defeated Kyle Chalfant of Guthrie Center.  He scored with three takedowns and a reversal before pinning Chalfant in the third period.

Shane Swank won one of the the toughest weight classes in the tournament at 160.  He quickly disposed of Teddy Daggett of Guthrie Center with a first-period pin in the first round.  That put Swank against Kallan Schmelzer of Corning in the semifinals. Schmelzer, a state-ranked wrestler, had defeated him earlier in the season. Swank got a takedown in the first period, rode Schmelzer through the second period, and got a reversal in the third period to take a 4-1 win.  Tyler Hein, another state-ranked wrestler, was Swank’s opponent in the finals.  Hein took an early five-point lead, but Swank came back with four points of his own near the end of the first period.  A reversal in the second period gave Swank the lead, and he built the lead in the third period to give him an 8-6 win.

Two other Mount Ayr wrestlers placed third.  They were Jacob Beamgard at 138 and Joe Ricker at 285.

Beamgard won his first round match by pinning Gunner Imerman of Guthrie Center in the second period.  Beamgard lost his semifinal match to top-seeded Hunter Grunsted of Panorama by a technical fall.  In the wrestlebacks Beamgard defeated John Askren of West Central Valley by a score of 6-1.  In the match for second Beamgard was pinned by Jared Thompson of Nodaway Valley.

Ricker had a bye the first round.  He lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Garrett Johnston of Panorama.  In this match Ricker led briefly during the third period but gave up a reversal to trail 5-4,  the eventual final score as Johnston held on for the win.  In wrestlebacks, Ricker had a first-period pin over Noah Orta of Martensdale-St. Marys.  Johnston, however, was defeated in the finals which left Ricker in third place.

Senior Zane Sickels closed out his Raider wrestling career with a fourth-place finish at 182. After a first-round bye, Sickels lost by fall to Zach Barton of Corning. In the match for third place, Sickels again lost by fall to Mike Ward of East Union.

Results of the other Raider wrestlers included:

At 120 pounds Trevor Anderson lost his first-round match to top-seeded Dylan Gibson of Martensdale-St. Marys by fall.  He was pinned in his next match by Kyle Bates of West Central Valley.

At 145 Wyatt Jackson was pinned in his first round match by Trevor Tucker of Panorama.  He was pinned in his next match by Garrett Newton of Corning.

At 152 Eric Miller was pinned by Barrett Brown of Panorama.  He was pinned in his next match by Jayson Pruitt of West Central Valley.

At 170 Zach Lemon lost his first match by fall to top-seeded Bryson Kinyon of East Union.   His next match was a loss by fall to Tanner Ruhland of West Central Valley.

The next stop for the Raider wrestlers is the district tournament at Corning Saturday. The four Raider champions will face the runners-up in their weight classes from the Underwood sectional.

Knapp, with a record of 26-16,  will face Jacob Vogel (40-9) of Riverside.

Staats (27-16) will take on Zach Vance (28-9) of Griswold.

Freed (41-5) will meet Austin Dolan (30-14) of Griswold.

Swank (38-7) will face Trevor Hough (36-13) from Underwood.

District champions and runners-up in each weight class advance to the state wrestling tournament beginning February 14 in Des Moines.

Raiders drop pair of conference games last week

The Raiders dropped a pair of conference road games last week.

Nodaway Valley 67, Mount Ayr 36

The Raiders traveled to Greenfield and lost a 67-36 decision to Nodaway Valley in a rescheduled game, Thursday, Jan. 31.

A tough first quarter saw Nodaway Valley unable to miss and the Raiders struggling to find position to score. Mount Ayr trailed by 18 as the first quarter ended but came back to play “at the same level,” in coach Bret Ruggles’ words, “the rest of the game. Nodaway Valley is a great team and can score in so many ways. I was still proud of our guys as we hung tough.”

Coming off the bench, freshman Jed McCreary had a great night, and Mount Ayr saw Jake Sobotka on the floor for the first time all season, back from a late season football injury.

Jake Still was points leader with 11. Jonathan Triggs and Jed McCreary led with five rebounds each while Dylan Doman dished out four assists.

Pleasantville 51, Mount Ayr 44

The Raiders dropped their second road game in as many days, falling to the Pleasantville Trojans, 51-44.

The Raiders led  at the end of the first half, 24-19, but Pleasantville came back in the third quarter hitting the boards while Mount Ayr struggled to get the shots. Pleasantville grabbed a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter and stretched it to take the seven-point win.

“We just stood around too much the second half,” said coach Ruggles. “We tried to use the skip pass to get shots rather than penetrate the zone and didn’t follow up when we got the interior looks.”

One career high was achieved by Raider Braydee Poore as he reached the 1,000 point mark in the Pleasantville contest. Poore’s record-matching bucket came late in the fourth quarter on a putback layup. He is only the second Raider player to officially achieve this feat, sharing honors with former Raider, Drew Larsen.

Although the loss was disappointing, coach Ruggles added, “It is good preparation for the district push.”

Raiderettes wallop Pleasantville to earn split of conference games

The Mount Ayr Raiderettes split a pair of conference road games last week, dropping an eight-point decision to Nodaway Valley but earning a 31-point win over Pleasantville.

Nodaway Valley 47, Mount Ayr 39

Mount Ayr’s Raiderettes fell 47-39 to the Nodaway Valley Wolverines in Greenfield, Thursday, Jan. 31.

“Turnovers and missed opportunities” were the deciding factors in this game, according to coach Thad Streit.

Nodaway Valley held a slim 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by six at halftime. Coming out of the locker room, Nodaway stretched the lead to nine before the Raiderettes came battling back in the third quarter. As the game progressed, however, Mount Ayr was unable to overcome the early deficit to claim the victory.

Lead scoring was shared by Brooke Rychnovsky and Caitlin Giles, both recording nine points. Taylor Still topped the stats with four rebounds and seven steals. Paige Daughton dished out six assists, and Emily Fox blocked one shot to round out the stats.

Mount Ayr 61, Pleasantville 30

For the second consecutive night, the Raiderettes took their game on the road, but this time they came home with a 61-30 win over Pleasantville.

Mount Ayr took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back, ending the first half with a 14-point lead, 34-20.

Key to the Raiderette success was their strong defense that held lead Pleasantville scorer, Kennedy Core, to only four points in the second half and a game total of 20.

Coach Thad Streit complimented his team. “We did a great job of taking care of the ball,” he said, “and our free throw shooting percentage was impressive as we shot 22/35.”

Senior Taylor Still led the team with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Morgan Quick recorded three assists, and Paige Daughton had five steals to lead the team.

Raiders get hot, go 3-0 for week

The Raiders are playing some of their best basketball of the season as they went 3-0 over the past week.

Mount Ayr 65, Southeast Warren 29

The Mount Ayr Raiders hosted  Southeast Warren and easily handled the Warhawks in their 65-29 win.

The Raiders took a strong lead in the first two quarters of play and headed to the halftime locker room leading 36-14.

Mount Ayr played with defensive intensity “forcing Southeast Warren into athletic plays all night and keeping the pressure on,” said coach Bret Ruggles.

With the increasing lead, Mount Ayr took the opportunity to use some different lineups as everyone saw playing time. Seniors Jake Still and Braydee Poore led the team again. Still scored 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds, recorded three steals, blocked three shots and dished four assists. Poore racked up 16 points, had five rebounds, four steals, four assists and one blocked shot. John Triggs tied for top rebounds with Still, also recording a total of seven.

Mount Ayr 44, Bedford 43

The Raiders claimed victory over Bedford, 44-43, in a hard fought game, Tuesday, Jan. 22. Coach Bret Ruggles commented, “We knew that Bedford was getting better every night. Our guys did a great job of staying tough during the stretch and our bench guys were an asset in the win.”

The Raiders and the Bulldogs traded baskets and defensive attacks in the first half  before retiring to the locker room with Mount Ayr ahead by one point, 22-21. The Raiders went on a run and stretched the lead in the third quarter to 36-28, but the Bulldogs responded in the fourth quarter and pulled back within one point, but the Raiders were able to maintain that margin for the one-point win.

Braydee Poore topped the stats with 13 points, four rebounds, one steal, two blocked shots and two assists. John Triggs and Jake Still pulled down 10 rebounds each, and Dylan Doman rounded out the top stats with three assists.

Mount Ayr 45, Chariton 39

The Raiders defeated Chariton at home, 45-39, in an impressive comeback effort in Mount Ayr January 28.

Chariton took an early lead as the Raiders struggled to find the basket in the first two quarters of play. Returning after the half, Mount Ayr went on a six-point run, with a three-point shot by Austin Quick providing the turning point for the Raiders as they nudged ahead by one. Missed shots and turnovers by Chariton were all Mount Ayr needed to boost their efforts as they took the lead to 40-37 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a tight contest with both teams vying for the lead, but with 32.9 seconds left in the game, Chariton was forced to foul and John Triggs stepped to the line to sink both shots. The gap widened to 42-37, and a second Chariton foul put Jake Still at the line. Still delivered on both shots, taking the score to 44-37. Chariton was able to get in one more shot with only 10 seconds remaining, but the Raiders held their lead and claimed the victory.

Leading the way for the Raiders were seniors Braydee Poore, Jake Still and John Triggs. Poore scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had one blocked shot and two assists. Still also recorded 15 points and seven rebounds, with one steal, three blocked shots and four assists.Triggs tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, one steal and one assist. Coach Bret Ruggles had praise all around for his team. “Coach Levine made a zone adjustment that held Chariton out of the lane,” he said. “Jake and Braydee did a great job coming off the ball screens and John responded well after a tough first quarter. [Jack] Jones was great off the bench and gave quality minutes to help get guys some rest. We are playing really hot right now!”
