WILLIAM NELSON HANKS

WILLIAM N. HANKS, SON OF IRA AND MARY JANE HANKS, WAS BORN IN RANDOLPH COUNTY, INDIANA, MARCH 15, 1864 AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE MARCH 20, 1947 AT 5:45 P.M., IN THE GREATER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL AT CRESTON, AT THE AGE OF 83 YEARS AND FIVE DAYS.

HE CAME TO RINGGOLD COUNTY WHEN HE WAS TWO YEARS OLD AND HAS RESIDED HERE CONTINUOUSLY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TWO YEARS IN UNION COUNTY.  HIS PARENTS DIED WHEN HE WAS A SMALL CHILD, AND HE WAS TAKEN INTO THE HOME OF JAKE AND CARRIE MICKAEL, WHERE HE GREW TO MANHOOD.

HE WAS MARRIED TO MARY SHENER MAY 16, 1889 AND TO THIS UNION ONE SON, CLIFFORD, WAS BORN.

HE WAS LATER MARRIED TO NETTIE LAMB ON MARCH 15, 1902. THREE CHILDREN WERE BORN TO THIS UNION, FLOYD AND JOHN HANKS AND FARESTA MINNICK ALL OF KELLERTON.

TO HIS MANY FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES HE WAS COMMONLY CALLED MATT.  HE WAS OF A KINDLY DISPOSITION, A GOOD NEIGHBOR, A TRUE FRIEND AND A LOVING AND CONSIDERATE COMPANION AND FATHER WHO WILL BE GREATLY MISSED IN THE HOME.

MR. HANKS HAS BEEN IN FAILING HEALTH FOR SEVERAL YEARS, HIS LAST ILLNESS BEING OF FOUR WEEKS’ DURATION. HE WAS VERY TENDERLY CARED FOR BY HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN AND ALL THAT WAS HUMANLY POSSIBLE WAS DONE TO RELIEVE HIS SUFFERING.

DURING HIS LAST ILLNESS HE CONFESSED HIS FAITH IN GOD AND UNITED WITH THE METHODIST CHURCH.

HE LEAVES TO MOURN HIS DEPARTURE A LOVING WIFE, THREE SONS, FLOYD AND JOHN OF KELLERTON, AND CLIFFORD OF KEWANEE, IL., A DAUGHTER, FARESTA MINNICK OF KELLERTON, ONE SISTER, SARAH JOHNSTON, OF HATFIELD, MO., AND SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN.

FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD SUNDAY FROM THE METHODIST CHURCH IN KELLERTON, CONDUCTED BY THE REV. VERNE WEIGEL.  MR. AND MRS. RUSSELL HUGHES SANG THREE HYMNS, ACCOMPANIED AT THE PIANO BY THEIR DAUGHTER, MINA. BURIAL WAS IN THE MAPLE ROW CEMETERY.
