John Arnold Combs, a resident of Houston, Texas, passed away at his home on December 4, 2009. John was born the son of Arnold and Lorene Combs on June 30, 1939 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. John graduated from Mount Ayr high school and completed the IBEW Electrical Apprenticeship Program in Houston, Texas. John was a journeyman electrician and an electrical superintendent for most of his career. He was later a detective with the Harris county sheriff’s department under Jack Heard. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Houston and the Scottish Rite. John enjoyed collecting coins, reading, playing Cribbage with his father and the arrival of the computer age.
His mother, Nora Lorene Combs, and his father, Arnold Raymond Combs; his sister, Marylin Ann Combs Giles, and his son, John Russell Combs, preceded John in death.
John is survived by his sister, Helen Sheldon and her husband Ray; his son, Jerry Linn Combs and Shayney Combs; his daughter, Terry Lynn Strong; grandchildren, John Granville Elder, Jarred Dayton Combs, Dane William Strong and Kinsley Mae Strong; nieces and nephews, Andrea Schindler and husband John, Caprice Rich and husband Walter, John Giles and wife Cindy and Dena Kothe and husband Jim.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 10, 2009. A second service was held Saturday, December 12, 2009, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. John was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
