Avis Maxine Groves Bucy January 3, 1931 – July 6, 2010

  Avis Maxine Groves Bucy, daughter of Carl and Iona (Stacy) Groves was born January 3, 1931 in Mount Ayr, Iowa and passed away July 6, 2010 in Creston, Iowa at the age of 79 years.

Her family lived on a farm southwest of Benton, Iowa and Maxine attended the Benton school all 12 years, graduating with the class of 1948. On January 26, 1951 she was united in marriage to LeRoy Bucy and to this union were born four children, Patricia Dianne, Jean Louise, Barbara Lynn (stillborn February 4, 1956) and Richard Carl. They lived near Benton and Maloy until moving to Creston the fall of 1966.

From an early age she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She taught one year at Lincoln No. 1 rural school north of Diagonal; two years in the intermediate room at Benton and six years as remedial math teacher in the Clarke Community school in Osceola. Later she was a waitress and breakfast cook at Berning Caf?? in Creston for over 21 years. She also worked for Hardees and Creston Homestyle Laundry until health problems forced her to retire.

She loved quilting, reading and country music but her greatest love was her family and spending time with them.

She is survived by her husband, LeRoy of Creston, Iowa; her children, Patti Bucy of Portland, Oregon, Jean (husband Bob) Barnes of Atlantic, Iowa and Richard Bucy (wife Judi Russell) of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jamey (husband Chuck) Park and Mike (Michelle West) Barnes, all of Atlantic, Iowa, Bud Bucy and Erika (Richard) Binns, all of Des Moines, Iowa, Brandon Downey of Portland, Oregon and Tiara Downey of California; two stepgranddaughters,  Janet (Mike) Lose and Jennifer (Scott) Pederson of Des Moines, Iowa; 12 great-grandchildren, Trent and Sarah Park, Drew McConnell, Alyssa, Maddie and Hannah West, Devin and Kylie Downey, Ellian Binns, Mackenzie and Morgan Lose and Nicholas Fine; her mother, Iona Groves, sister, Louise (Dean) Frost, and brother, Dave (Betty Lou) Groves, all of Mount Ayr, Iowa; sister-in-law, Leona Brown of Nevada, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her father, Carl Groves; brother, Tom Groves; infant daughter, Barbara Lynn, and her parents-in-law, LeRoy and Anna Bucy. 

A memorial fund has been established to Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston and American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr.

Services were conducted at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Friday, July 9, 2010. Mrs. Norma Stringham officiated. Musician was Tracey Fees.

Casket bearers included Bob Barnes, Chuck Park, Mike Barnes, Trent Park, Drew McConnell and Randy Andrews.

Honorary pallbearers were Bud Bucy, Erika Binns, Brandon Downey, Tiara Downey and Jamey Park.

Maxine was laid at rest in the Benton Cemetery, Benton.
