To the editor:
I have had the privilege of knowing Rob Haley and his family for many years. While we all know Rob as “Sheriff”, I wanted to share how I personally appreciate Rob as not only sheriff, but as a person. It takes a special individual to be able to deal with the responsibilities and politics that come along with the Sheriff title – and Rob has handled it with grace. Not only is he the Sheriff that “didn’t have to be”, but he’s also a huge part of various activities in our community.
I have been a member of the same Church as the Haley family for many years – and a leader for our Church’s Youth Group for 2 years. Rob has been an active member in not only our Church, but also with our Youth Group. Countless times I can remember having a fundraiser of some sort or a local mission project, and could always count on Rob to be standing there offering to help. He has bussed tables, bought endless amounts of baked goods from sales, washed trays, poured drinks, drove kids here and there….and all out of the goodness of his heart.
On a personal level, My sister fought an illness for many years, and was hospitalized and very sick in 2018. Rob and his family were there for my family while she was sick – calling and texting to see what they could do for us. Offering prayers and well wishes. Checking in etc. A few months after her hospitalization, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery. Again, Rob and his family were calling, texting, stopping by the house. Not for any reason other than they cared.
In December of 2018 we lost my sister. After a year of ups and downs, our family was certainly feeling broken. Yet again, Rob was checking in, offering anything and everything he could, and his wife was checking in to see what they could do as a family – providing food, offering help etc. At her funeral procession, Rob not only led to the cemetery, but all the way to her graveside per family request. It was a simple, yet very meaningful gesture.
I appreciate Rob stepping up and filling a big set of shoes he didn’t have to as Sheriff – but more importantly I appreciate Rob as a person. He represents Ringgold County proudly. He is a great example of a husband, father, brother, son, uncle and overall human being. I certainly appreciate him, as well as his family.
