One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, November 11, 1925.)
Costin & Dow, who own a general merchandise store at Worth, MO, have decided to locate in Mount Ayr and last week rented the Timby Building east of the Odd Fellows Hall. They are receiving this week their stocks of ladies’ ready-to-wear, dry goods, and house furnishings and will be ready for business Saturday.
The trial of the case of the state of Iowa vs John Reynard, under indictment charging seduction, which was in progress in the district court when the Record News went to press last week, resulted in the failure of the jury to reach an agreement and the case was continued to the January term of court.
A report from Indianola says the Warren County high school athletic association at its first meeting of the year, held in conjunction with the County Institute, to abolish girls’ inter school basketball games during the coming year, as recommended by the Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The chief objections to the game for girls of high school age were that their health is endangered by the too strenuous exercises and by the extreme emotional effects resulting from intense rivalry displayed in the games. Attention was called to the fact that the American Medical Society and the physical directors of our colleges discourage the game for high school girls.

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, November 16, 1950.)
The Raiders downed Leon, 20-6 last Friday evening in their final game of the season. The results of this game gave the Raiders second place in the Blue Grass Conference. In this last game Dolecheck, Richards, and Terwilliger scored in the first, second, and third quarters, respectively. Simpson scored for Leon in the final quarters of the game.
Dolecheck scored in the first quarter after racing 20 yards to score. The conversion was good and the score remained 7-0 throughout the 1st quarter.
Bill Richards scored in the second quarter after the ball had been brought to within 10 yards of the Leon goal line. The half found the Raiders leading 13-0.
Hugh Terwilliger broke loose and raced 50 yards to complete a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. The conversion was completed and the starting of the 4th quarter found Leon trailing 20-0.
Simpson scored for Leon when he ran 30 yards to score. The game ended shortly with the Raiders leading 20-6.

Fifty Years Ago

An estimated loss of 140 racoon hides, wire stretchers, pocket knives and some guns (antique, shot guns and rifles) totaling about $6,000 occurred either late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, November 5 or 6th, at Hutchinson and Swanson Seed and Fur at 303 East Monroe in Mount Ayr.
Twenty-five in currency and $290 in food stamps were taken from Don’s Ayrliner Food Mart about 7:30 p.m. Saturday by what evidently was a team of gypsy women.
Owner Don Solliday said seven women entered the store and while six of them engaged the attention of all the clerks, the seventh slipped into his office at the rear of the store and took the cash and stamps from the safe. They left some money in the safe, evidently to cover the fact that any was missing.
The ready-mix concrete plant owned by Country Boys Lumber & Concrete has been purchased by a Missouri firm, according to a recent announcement.
Effective October 20, the mixing plant on East Columbus Street, just east of the intersection with Polk Street, is being operated by Mount Ayr Concrete Co., a subsidiary of a Missouri firm which owns six plants in Missouri and two others in Iowa, including Osceola and Davis City.
Another possibility of mutilation of cattle in Ringgold County is being investigated by personnel in the Ringgold County sheriff’s office. This is the third time this type of thing has been reported to the Ringgold County sheriff Elbert Strange within the last three weeks.

Diagonal high school students who attended classes at MACHS were followed in several classes by a camera crew from Iowa Public Television Tuesday as part of a story being done on how the Diagonal community school district has worked to stay viable in a time when many small school districts are disappearing.
Two Mount Ayr community students will be taking part in the all-state music festival in Ames this week. Clara Terrell will be playing the oboe with the all-state band while Ashley Ingram will be singing with the Opus choir, which honors top middle school singers in the state.
Brad Elliott of Mount Ayr, now a student athlete at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO, was named to the all-state team for winning the Class 2A title in the 800 meter run at the state track meet.
The city of Mount Ayr is officially one of the sponsors of the Gooseberry Lake project after the council voted to sign a 28E agreement at a special meeting Monday night.
Ribbon cutting for Auto Works was held this week. A business being run by Ed Hiebig to provided auto repair and tire needs. The business is located in the former Tire Zone location next to the Splash N Dash car wash.

Ten Years Ago

A burst of uncharacteristically severe weather, including at least one confirmed funnel cloud, battered Ringgold County Wednesday, November 11, bringing with it several reports of damage to trees, powerlines, and out buildings.
The faculty of Mount Ayr community high school have announced to the newest inductees of the Parnassus Chapter of the National Honor Society. Kyle Dolecheck, Haylea England, Sadie Frost, Breanne Haley, Mitchell Jennett, Macy Larsen, Megan Reasoner, Ashton Sheil, Kelcie Shields, Tessa Shields, and Megan Warin.
The streets of Mount Ayr were pretty much deserted Friday afternoon as the Raiders took on Akron-Westfield in the Class A state semifinals at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. The Raiders lost a heart breaker on a late 2 point conversion final score 36-35.
Births: November 2, a daughter, Zella, to Ashley and Bryan Alden..A son, Lucas, was born to Josh and Beth Hopkins.
