Mt. Ayr 62, SWV 33
The Raiders hosted the Southwest Valley Timberwolves last Tuesday, January 12 in a contest that saw the Raiders improve to 9-2 after a 62-33 victory.
The Raiders were led by Jaixen Frost and Payton Weehler who scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Noticeably missing from the contest was Erik Trujillo.
“I told our guys not to press, sometimes when you lose a player you want to press and I was afraid Jaixen would think he would need to go up for 40,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “It was opposite tonight. We shared the ball really well and had some really nice passes and challenged them in our press. We were very good defensively tonight.”
Weehler led the team in rebounds with five, while Frost led the team in steals with three.
Riley Maudlin was efficient from the line for the Raiders, scoring on five-of-six attempts from the freethrow line.
The Raiders were good on 41 percent of their buckets on the night and 42.9 percent from outside the three point arc.
At the line the Raiders were 66.7 percent, making 12-of-18 freethrows.
Tuesday nights game was also the first with a full gym of fans.
“It meant the world to the guys and you could definitely tell,” said coach Ruggles. “It’s great to see everyone back and I hope everyone is being safe and hope we can take care of this for the next couple weeks.”

Mt. Ayr 47, Murray 38
The Raiders traveled to Mustang Country on Monday, January 18 to take on Murray in a non-conference matchup.
The Raiders were sluggish out of the gate, allowing Murray to go up 10-7, but into the second quarter, the Raiders found their rythm and put up 18 while only allowing four.
The second quarter was big for the Raiders as Murray came back in after halftime and chipped away at the lead, but the Raiders and Mustangs were even with 14 each to close out the game.
The Raiders defeated the Mustangs 47-38 in a hard fought contest that saw Jaixen Frost lead the scoring with 20 and Erik Trujillo, back with the team, scoring 10.
The Raiders shot 45.5 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from three-point territory.
A fairly clean game saw the Raiders at the the line four times all night where they made three-of-four freethrows.
Payton Weehler led the team in assists with seven while Cody Larson, Erik Trujillo and Weehler each had six rebounds to lead the team at the board.
“Every time you come up to Murray it’s a little awkward,” said coach Ruggles. “We had a four day break, they had a four day break. It’s a short court and Murray plays hard. Not always the most talented but they will outwork you and out hustle you.”
The Raiders look to Lenox on Tuesday night in a big Pride of Iowa matchup and are looking at Murray as a way to clean things up.
“We had guys handling the ball that maybe shouldn’t have been, guys out of position, but we will get there,” said Ruggles. “After the break this was a big deal.”
Districts will be announced Friday and the Raiders saw this win as a big push toward where they want to be placed.
“This is a good win for the district,” said Ruggles. “We know districts are being announced Friday so any win you can post now and get in the committees ear is great.”
