Mt. Ayr 65, Lenox 45
Mount Ayr traveled to Lenox for a game of basketball last Tuesday, January 19.
Their first meeting, December 8 saw the Raiders get a nice win over their POI competitors and the Tigers once again fell to the Raiders.
Mount Ayr had a hot start, going up 24-13 in the first quarter before the Tigers chipped away in the second to head into halftime with a five point lead.
Mount Ayr came out in the second half, controlling the game for the next 16 minutes as Jaixen Frost put up 25 points and Payton Weehler scored 10 and Cody Larson recorded eight while also leading the team in rebounds with eight, along with recording a block and steal.
“We started out great tonight. You worry about back-to-backs, how are you going to start,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “We had some nice plays side-to-side and got some open shots.”
The win improved the Raiders to 11-2 with district play right aroudn the corner.
“I did not think we would be 11-2 at this point in time so it has been very good for us,” said coach Ruggles. “We’ve had some COVID issues so some of our guys have had to step up and that has worked in our benefit. They feel more confident and we have kind of gone through it and teams that haven’t are going to have to go through it soon.”

The Raiders traveled to Martensdale to face the undefeated Blue Devils last Friday.
Mount Ayr put Martensdale on its heels as they went up 11-3 after one quarter of play. The Blue Devils began to find their identity, however, as Jack Franey began to hit threes the Blue Devils made it a one point contest in favor of the Raiders heading into halftime, 21-20.
The second half went to Martensdale as the Raiders struggled to make any buckets, scoring 15 between the third and fourth quarters, while the Blue Devils put up 34.
Jaixen Frost led the scorers for Mount Ayr with 15 and Erik Trujillo saw nine while Cody Larson put up six.
Martensdale was led by Jack Franey with 17 and Troy Holt with 12.
“We played them really well for three quarters,” said coach Ruggles. “Unfortunately in the fourth their legs, their athleticism and their talent took over. We got gassed and unfortunately that’s the way it goes.”
Mount Ayr struggled in the fourth, only scoring 15 in the last 16 minutes, but learned a lot from the first half.
“We will watch the film and we will get better,” said Ruggles. “I told the guys they won’t get better winning by 30, you get better with these.”
The Raiders were set to face Central Decatur on Monday, but a winter storm postponed the game once more as well as the game against Van Meter on Tuesday.
