U.S. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst (R) was in Diagonal on Friday as part of her 99-county tour of Iowa.
Ernst toured the Excel Engineering facility. The tour was led by Excel Engineering owner Doug Sobotka.
Sobotka gave Ernst the history of the building and showed her the equipment they use to measure an engine’s performance.
Ernst discussed a number of issues with Excel Engineering employees at the conclusion of the tour. The session covered a wide variety of issues.
Ernst said the the electricity failure in Texas shows how investments need to be made in infrastructure in the country. While she said electric vehicles are certainly on their way, we are a long way from not being able to rely on the internal combustion engine.
Other topics discussed were gun control (she’s against it); the $15 per hour minimum wage that is in the COVID stimulus package put forward by President Biden (she said it should not be part of the package but discussed separately); the proposed bailout for poorly run states (she said Iowa taxpayers should not have to pay for other states mistakes).
She also sounded optimistic that China would continue to purchase Iowa agricultural products.
When asked about the claim made by former President Trump that the election was stolen from him, Ernst said she was sure there was fraud in the election, but not enough to change the outcome.
Ernst was at the facility for about an hour.
