Ryan Victor
Personnel decisions topped a full agenda at the Monday, March 8 meeting of the Mount Ayr Community Schools board of directors.
The board approved the hiring of a list of individuals to fill teaching and coaching vacancies.
Ryan Victor was hired as an elementary physical education teacher and head varsity football coach. Victor is a classroom teacher and assistant football coach at Missouri Valley High School this year.
Adam Triggs was hired as a high school science teacher. Triggs is a 2003 MACHS graduate and has taught in the East Union schools for several years.
Individuals hired to fill coaching positions include Brandie Ruggles as co-head volleyball coach, Brent Wise as bowling coach, Chris Elwood as head varsity baseball coach, and Dayton Little of middle school baseball coach.
The board approved a 28E agreement with the Bedford school district to continue sharing an art teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.
The board also accepted the resignations of Clint Poore as head of buildings and grounds, Barb Gerber as prom sponsor and Rod Bastow as middle school wrestling coach.
The board approved the master contract with the Mount Ayr Education Association.
The contract with the certified teaching staff calls for a 2.64 percent salary increase across the board, a $1,200 increase to the base salary (with current steps frozen on the salary schedule), an increase to $15 per hour for teachers who are occasionally called upon to cover for other teachers (matching substitute pay), and the ability to bank personal days up to a total of five. Teachers are granted two personal leave days per year.
The contract for non-certified staff also includes a 2.64 percent compensation increase.
Other business
In other business the board:
• learned preschool registration is set for April 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary library ,and kindergarten registration taking place April 21, also at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary library.
• learned that the Junior Raider summer school program is scheduled for the first four weeks in June. Elementary principal Chris Elwood said the program will operate as in the past, with academic work scheduled in the morning and activities scheduled in the afternoons.
• listened to a presentation from 7-12 principal Bill Huntington about the planning and implementation of teaching strategies used by teachers during the recent “virtual snow days.”
• approved a quote from Hoglund Bus Company for a 2022 71-passenger International school bus. Cost of the bus is $102,000. The board had received higher quotes for a Bluebird and Thomas bus.
• approved a 28E agreement for a diverse list of classes offered by Southwestern Community College to Mount Ayr high school students. These classes are offered on the Mount Ayr campus, at the SWCC campus in Creston, and online.
• set the public hearing on the FY22 district budget for Monday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m.
• approved a request from the junior parents to use the middle and high school gyms and commons area for prom activities.
• agreed to seek proposals from different agencies to provide the district’s insurance coverage for next school year.
• heard preliminary plans from superintendent Jason Shaffer to replace computers for students and staff in grades 7-12 and to replace copiers in the district. Shaffer said he would present detailed recommendations at a future board meeting.
