“Here are my best photos of the jaw dropping structure of the Mount Ayr, Iowa supercell last night,” reported extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer on the Chicago and Midwest Storm Chasers Facebook page July 10.
Mother Nature threw a curveball at Ringgold County Friday night, July 9.
A supercell thunderstorm entered the county at approximately 9:30 p.m. accompanied by several inches of rain, hail, and gusty winds.
Below is a summary of the progress of the storm compiled by Interactive Hail Maps, an online weather service.
• At 9:37 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located north of Mount Ayr, moving south at 25 mph (radar indicated). Hazards include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. This severe thunderstorm will be near, Mount Ayr around 9:45 p.m.
• At 10:13 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located just north of Mount Ayr, moving south at 20 mph (radar indicated).
• At 10:20 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Mount Ayr, moving southeast at 10 mph (radar indicated). Hazards include ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
• At 10;25 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Mount Ayr, and is nearly stationary Trained weather spotters reported ping pong size hail 0.9 miles ENE of Mount Ayr at 10:24 p.m. Hazards include ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. This severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of central Ringgold county.
• At 10:36 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located just southeast of Mount Ayr, moving southeast at 20 mph (radar indicated). t.
• At 10:44 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located south of Mount Ayr, moving southeast at 20 mph (radar indicated). Hazards include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
