One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record -News, Thursday, January 25, 1922.)
Tingley News: The general store of J.S. Sheesley was broken into sometime Sunday night, the miscreants gaining entrance through the front door, blowing open the safe and securing about $5 in cash and a pair of shoes.
The work looks like the work of professionals. They left no clues and only a chisel was found in the store.
The same night the safe in the Tingley Lumber Company was opened and a small amount of money was secured. They entered the work room at the new elevator and secured some tools.
The explosion was heard by two families, but they gave no alarm or tried to track the robbers and they probably never will be caught.
An automobile accident, which fortunately was not attended by more serious results, happened this afternoon at the NE corner the square.
The Overland touring car, owned by Howard Fry and driven by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Homer Jones, smashed through one of the large plate glasses at the Luce Drug Store.
The car had been parked in the center of the street and when Mrs. Jones attempted to start it, having been used to driving a Ford, she became somewhat confused and the car was driven directly into the window,

Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, January 23, 1947.)
Donald Pratt, 16 year old son of Mrs. Effie Pratt, suffered injuries to his left thigh Saturday about noon, when the revolver he and Charles Richards were examining was discharged.
The bullet entered the body between the knee and the hip, glancing upward and lodged about 2 inches under skin. Because no serious complications resulted, it was deemed inadvisable to remove the bullet at the present time.
Membership in the Ringgold County Farm Bureau passed the 500 mark for the first time since the early 1920’s according to figures released by Harold Page, county organization director.

Fifty Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, January 27, 1972.)
Jail break here Sunday night…Robert L. Thomas, 27, of Red Oak, escaped Sunday night from Ringgold County jail where he had been confined since January 7, for the theft of cattle at the Mount Ayr Livestock, belonging to David Irving.
To effect his escape, Thomas had removed the bolts and nuts from a four-foot metal lever to the security cells, which he used to pry open a metal cage and break the hinges. He then climbed through an eighteen inch square hole in the door and was believed to have left the courthouse through a window in the janitors quarters.
Elaine McAlexander has been named the Mount Ayr Community high school Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for 1972.

Three births and 54 deaths were reported in statistics released by the Ringgold Count Clerk of Court, Cindy Johnson in a year-end report.
These numbers only reflect the number of births and deaths that actually occurred in Ringgold County. The number of births are small due to the lack of an obstetric practice in the local hospital.
Local winners in the Elks Hoop Shoot contest held during physical education classes at Mount Ayr Community school include: Nicole Minnick, Adam Jackson, Jared Armstrong, Maggie Gilliland, Kelsey Allen, Nathan Weeda, Sarah Geist, Cameron Weidenthaler, Mike Mitchell, Alycia Hamaker, Melissa Winkler, Jaren Ricker and Ryan Roe.

Murder, suicide shakes Ringgold County. Friday morning death of Lori Yeager in rural Mount Ayr home is only the third murder in Ringgold County in the last 30 years.
“These were tragic events for all of Ringgold County,” said sheriff Mike Sobotka. “We wish for better outcomes but we have certainly had our share of tragedies in the past few months in Ringgold County.”
He was referencing the two deaths of two young people in tragic accidents. “Kylee, Maisie and Brett have all lost parents, people have lost friends, families have lost loved ones,” Sobotka said.
Mount Ayr Pamida store may soon get a new name as part of a merger with the Shopko Stores retail chain. Two of the nation’s top mid-west based general merchandise retail chains, Shopko Stores and Pamida, announced this past week that they will merge to create one of the largest US retailers focused on serving smaller and rural communities.
