Wayne 8, Mt. Ayr 1
The Raiderettes had a tough outing on the road against the Wayne Lady Falcons on June 7.
What started off as a strong showing with loaded bases and no outs, quickly turned into a derailment.
The Raiderettes were positioned to do maximum damage in the first inning of the contest, loading bases with no outs against Lady Falcon pitcher and University of Iowa commit Sterling Berndt.
A quick visit to the mound by coach Heather Fortune seemed to bring Berndt back into the right mindset as she struck out the next three Raiderette batters, leaving three on base and no damage dealt.
Things went off the rails for the Raiderettes following the inning as Raiderette pitcher Addy Reynolds allowed seven runs on three hits, while walking four, through 2.2 innings.
Zoey Larsen came in to shake things up and breathe a little life into the Raiderettes and after 2.1 innings, Larsen allowed one run on two hits and struck out two, but an ankle injury sidelined the junior and eight grader Kensie Barnes entered the game for her first ever varsity action.
Barnes threw eight pitches and the Lady Falcons put two balls into play, both grounders, one to the short stop and one to second for two outs and the third out came on a Barnes strike out.
“It felt pretty good and my sisters were there to boost me up,” said Barnes, whose sisters Linsie and Halsie play second and first base, respectively. “I was super excited to be out there.”
Barnes felt excited about to be on the field with her sisters, the older of which, Halsie, heads to Southwest Iowa Community College next year to play for the Spartans.
“It felt good to actually play with my sister and she is always there to support me,” said Barnes. “It felt warming.”
Halsie Barnes had great things to say about her little sister, and what it meant to play with her in what could be the first and last time.
“It was huge, we used to go out and I’d catch her on a bucket and let her pitch to me,” said Barnes. “I have waited for the moment that she got up here with us. It was huge. Having all three of us on the field was huge and I’m super proud of her [Kensie]. She works hard and deserves every minute of the playing time she is getting.”
The Raiderettes recorded seven hits on the day which was led by Payten Lambert who had three hits and recorded the teams only run, while Linsie Barnes recorded two hits.
In the field, the Raiderettes committed four errors, while also recording 18 putouts on 25 total chances and three assists.
“Coming in we have a great game plan and we executed it perfecntly. We get bases loaded on two bunts and we got the momentum, we just didn’t cash them, I can live with that,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “Next inning we get two more runners on, they get out of it. They put two runs on the board, we had an awkward play and we had no momentum after that. The game got away from us and it became death by 1,000 cuts.”
Coach Ruggles talked about his pitching group that battled through injury and adversity.
“Zoey Larsen came in with zero warmup after Addy was injured and then Kensie Barnes, who was not on the books tonight, but she came in and did a great job,” said coach Ruggles. “She can take this into the offseason where she can really develop. I happen to look out and she’s throwing a pitch and said let’s go. Typical Barnes, they are laid back and all three are great. She came in and pitched and she did a great job.”

The Raiderettes hosted the Nodaway Valley Wolverines last Friday and were able to bounce back after the loss to Wayne just days before.
Nodaway Valley scored quickly to go up 2-0 after the first inning, but the Raiderettes responded with three runs in the second to take the lead after a Breya Nickle bunt that put two across after the throw to first is off target that saw Nickle to third.
Linsie Barnes hit a grounder that drove in Nickle for the go-ahead run.
Payten Lambert stepped up to the plate in the third and got the entire ball as it sailed out of the field for her first career home run.
“It feels good, I’ve been waiting to hit one for a long time. I’ve been close but it’s never quite went over,” said Lambert. “It’s [the win] good to boost our confidence going into tomorrow and keep us on our high so we can play well tomorrow.”
Addy Reynolds was in the circle all seven innings for the Raiderettes where she struck out eight batters, while allowing two runs on five hits.
