One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, October 11, 1922.)
The radio sets around town were centers of interest during the World Series baseball games last week, as the games were reported play by play from Kansas City and part of the time they could hear New York reporting to Kansas City. (New York Yankees lost to the Giants).
The board of education wants the school to be modern and keeping with this idea two phones have been placed here as a service to the school and its patrons.
Marriage: September 2, Alice VanHoozer and Burr Hollingsworth.
Births: October 5, a son, to Mr. and Mrs. H.S.Phillips…September 24, a son Warren K. to Mr. and Mrs. Warren Statler…September 27, a daughter, Betty, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stamper.

Years Ago

The Hyde Food Stores established a store in Mount Ayr last week following the purchase of the Bliss Market in the Wilson building on the north side of the square. The new store becomes the 29th of a group operating in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. The local store is under management of W.B. (Bill) Clemons of Villisca.
The stock and merchandise of the Currie Variety Store was sold last week to the P.M. Place Stores Co.
Mr. Currie who has been in business in Mount Ayr for 40 years, retires from the variety store business, but plans to continue his optical work, maintaining his office at the present location until November 1, when he will establish his office at his home just east of the Methodist Church. The Todd Hardware will occupy the Currie building after November 1.

A new business has opened its doors in Mount Ayr. A Western Auto associate store has been established at 116 N. Taylor Street across the street from the Record News in the formerly owned building of Earl Roudybush.
Allan Triggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Triggs of Mount Ayr has been awarded the American Farmer degree. Allan was nominated for the degree by the Iowa FFA Association.
Mary Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cooper of Tingley was crowned the homecoming queen for Mount Ayr Community school during the half-time of the football game Friday night.

Grand Valley Community School district voters overwhelmingly voted to dissolve their school district effective July 1, 1995 when they went to the polls in large numbers Tuesday.
For the first time, Mount Ayr city employees are in the process of bargaining a union contract with the city.
At a special meeting of the city council Thursday September 18, Sandy Opstvedt of Union Local #55 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and city employee, Chuck Waske, met with the council with their opening contract proposal.
Large amounts of toxic household waste collected. Volunteers were decked out in goggles, with safety suits and rubber gloves to deal with the hazardous household wastes brought to the clean-up day at the Ringgold County fairgrounds Saturday morning.
Items were placed in 55 gallon drums for disposal of material were taken away along with two semi loads of used tires.

Ten Years Ago

Five qualify four All-Iowa dance team. Mount Ayr Community high school girls went a perfect five-for-five at the recent tryouts for the All-Iowa drill team. The five qualifying for the squad this year are Maddi Hosfield, In kick performance; Allison Wallace, pre-game performance; April Shields, in kick performance; Caitlyn Giles, in pom performance; and Maggie Jennett, in pom performance.
Ringgold County Group Home celebrated it’s 25th anniversary Sunday with an open house. The home is currently at full capacity with eight residents, five of whom have lived in the home for it’s entire 25 years of existence. The group home is a non-profit housing and care facility for mentally and physically challenged adults.
The Waubonsie Tractor Club sponsored an old-time tractor pull in Benton on October 6. Club members as well as guests from other tractor clubs were present for the competition.
