One Hundred Years Ago

Forty years of continuous service in business in Mount Ayr is the unique record of C.R. Keating, local hardware dealer. Mr Keating learned the hardware business and the trade of plumber and tinsmith from his father. His first store was located in a frame building east of the Odd Fellows building. The store was later moved to the north side of the square and occupied that location for more than a quarter of a century until about a year ago, when the building was purchased by Chas. V. Agee and Mr. Keating purchased the building on the east side of the square where his store is located now.
The bobbed hair craz has sure struck Tingley but our barbers do not object in the least.(To bob or not to bob – that is the question that is causing more argument, more acrimonious discussion in this country today than any other, with the possible exception of prohibition. It interests all classes and sexes. The emancipated – those who have had their hair bobbed – have coined a term for those who have not – “horse and buggy”. This has taken its place beside that other term of opprobrium and scorn – “Old Ironsides” – applied to those of the younger generation who still wear corsets. Taken from glamourdaze.com).

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Fire completely Destroyed the interior of the Diagonal Theatre Saturday evening about 7:45 o’clock. Only the walls of the building, which was owned by C.W. McMurphy, were left standing after firemen worked for an hour to bring the blaze under control. Mr. McMurphy estimated the damage at $8,000.
Cold and stormy weather conditions have continued during the past week with temperatures below the seasonal normal.
Lows for the week were recorded on January 26 and January 31 when the mercury dipped to below eleven below zero and February 1, when the little silver thread stood at seven below. High temperatures of 20 degrees were recorded on January 25, according to the local weather observer, H.L. Cornelison. Six inches of snow were recorded on January 27. Six days were cloudy and one was clear during the seven day period.

Fifty Years Ago

Ringgold County teenagers overwhelmingly think a teen center would be a positive addition to the area and a large majority say they would be willing to volunteer time to help make it work.
That’s the results of a survey of students 7-12 grades taken at Mount Ayr Community high school and Diagonal Community high school.
Now is the time to express opinions about whether a walking and biking trail across Mount Ayr is a project that the community would support. If enough positive comment is received, the city council could then give the go ahead to begin looking for grant money for the project.
Three MACHS wrestlers placed in the tough John J. Harris Invitational tournament where 20 teams were represented and included several Class 2A teams from the Hawkeye 8 conference.
Brett Shields took the crown at the 119 pound weight class, Ben Dorr took second at the 135 pound class and Mitch Gourley took 6th in the 135 pound class.

Crowned king and queen of the Diagonal Community high school homecoming festivities Friday were Adam Stephens and Kylene Stamps.
Crowned 1999 beef queen was Julie Morgan and princess Amber Taylor at the annual Ringgold County Cattlemen and women meeting Saturday.
A new law is now in effect that gives graduated driver’s licenses to young drivers, and a system has been set up to provide special waivers if needed.
Drivers who reach the age of 16, have completed driver education class and have met other graduated drivers license requirements, receive an intermediate driver’s license. The new license prohibits the youngster from driving unaccompanied by an adult between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless the license is in possession of a waiver allowing motor vehicle operation to and from work or school-related activities during those hours.

Ten Years Ago

Heartland installation marks milestone~A new wind turbine and blades designed and manufactured by Heartland Energy Solutions of Mount Ayr were installed Friday January 31 at BB & P Feed & Grain in Winterset near the intersection of Hwy 92 and Hwy 169. The complete turbine project is a milestone for the local company that began operation in April 2007.
Ryker Hickman placed first in the 12 year old boys competition in the Knights of Columbus district free throw contest held February 2 in Osceola. He now advances to the regional contest in Albia on February 23.
Jacob Sobotka 6’2”, 200 lb quarterback/linebacker for the Mount Ayr Raider football team took his official visit to the University of Iowa February 2 and accepted their offer to become a preferred walk-on with the Iowa Hawkeye football team.
Birth: Januaary 6, a son, Sawyer to Reggie and Emily Lesan.
