One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, May 14, 1924.)
Undertakers from surrounding towns visited Mount Ayr yesterday for the purpose of witnessing the disinterment of the body of Samuel Rhoades, whose burial took place in Rose Hill Cemetery two years ago.
The body was taken up in order that it might be placed in an adjoining lot and the undertakers were invited to witness the disinterment in order that they might have an opportunity to know that the Clark Grave Vault, which contained the casket, was in fact equal to the claims made for it by the makers.
Mr. West and son have purchased the Princess Theatre from Leo Williams and will have moving pictures on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and
Saturday evenings.
Eating yeast is the latest fad. People who are fat eat it that they may become lean and lean people eat it that they may become fat.
Dr. Paul Sampson, representing the National Health League, told a group of Federated Women Club adherents in Des Moines the other day, that eating yeast is injurious in that it deters digestion.
William Timby is improving his building on the northeast corner of the square, occupied by the M.E. Freeland store and the Luce Drug store, by having the same stuccoed.

The P.M. Places Store Co., operator of variety and notions stores in Bethany, Albany, Maryville, MO and Mount Ayr, has recently announced the purchase of two more stores, at Chariton and Knoxville.
The neighbors of Clifford Force went Wednesday of last week to his farm and prepared the ground for planting of corn. Mr. Force was injured 3 weeks ago in a tractor accident.
Included among the men were Ira Campbell, Quincy Combs, J.T. Nichols, Howard Townsend, Lyndon Nichols and D.A. Vaughn.

Fifty Years Ago

Twenty-seven firefighters from across the state were awarded patches upon certification as fire service instructors during the Annual Instructors Conference held May 2 at Iowa State University.
Howard Bryan of Mount Ayr received his patch from Roger Sweet of the ISU Fire Service Extension.
A new computerized blood chemistry analyzer was recently installed in the laboratory of the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr under the supervision of Laboratory Director, Don Nichols, MT (ASCP). The machine will automatically pickup the blood serum and mix it with the proper reagent.
Robin Shreve of Tingley has been selected by American Legion Auxiliary unit 156 of Tingley to attend Iowa American Auxiliary Girls State.
Brent Geringer was the only Raider to qualify for the state meet in the district track meet held at Griswold Saturday. He won both the shot put and discus.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The end of an era of public service on state commissions came about last week when Mildred Elliott of Mount Ayr resigned as chairwoman of the Iowa Board of Corrections.
She has spent more than 30 years on state policy-making boards and commissions including 14 years on the Iowa Board of Corrections.
Ringgold County Sheriff, Lyle Minnick, turned in his resignation to the Ringgold county board of supervisors during their session Tuesday, May 3.
Minnick has served in the Ringgold county sheriff’s office for almost 24 years, fourteen of which was as elected sheriff.
Nine members join National Honor Society. New members included: Rick Webb, Morgan Dredge, Mandy Johnson, Amber Taylor, Amanda Werner, Matt Gilliland, Josh Rusk, Korbie Rinehart and Nina Still.
Mount Ayr community elementary school’s math team placed 3rd in the state in the state math contest held in Marshalltown Saturday. Members of the team include: Katie Weddle, Rachel Lesan, Dustin Larsen, Amanda Hynek, Michael Inloes, and Scott Cook.
A MACH school senior, Brandon Yoder, has signed a letter of intent to play two sports at Graceland College next year. He will play football and baseball.

Ten Years Ago

The Mount Ayr city council proceeded with plans for a street improvement project by entering into a loan agreement and approving a change in order for engineering services during a relatively short meeting Monday. The council approved the issuing of $1.1 million in general obligation bonds to finance the costs of the street project.
Mount Ayr Hy-Vee and Misfit Crossfit announced the winners of four bicycles sponsored by the “Hy-Vee/MC Three” promotion. Winners in Mount Ayr were Becca Smith and Ethan Schmidt. Diagonal winners were Sadie Berger and Eldon Paxson.
Births: March 29, a daughter, Ayla, to Dr. Valerie Lynch Christianson and Shane Christianson.
