To the editor:
When something is common, we lose sight of how miraculous, and extraordinary it can be, in spite of that commonness. We give value to things that are unique, or unusual, and overlook the ordinary. But, some of the most beautiful things in the world are things that are common.
Child birth, motherhood, marriage: a literal commitment for all of time, between two people, a dog’s unwavering loyalty, are all common occurrences, but each miraculous in their own right.
Motherhood is a divine calling. It is sacrificial, Holy work, and you will not ever convince me otherwise. It is the act of loving another soul so deeply, so profoundly, that nothing on Earth could ever rival that love.
Motherhood is acting as the portal between Heaven and Earth, to grow another human. Stretching your body, and bearing pain, that when measured in decibels, could break bones.
Motherhood is full of sleepless nights, cuddled in close, watching their tiny chests rise and fall. Hands and faces wiped over and over again. It’s one more bed time story, and organizing birthday parties. Birthday parties that aren’t as sweet as the cake, because with each passing year, you end up with a new child, and a new world of possibilities, as well as things you’ll miss, like squeaky voices and good morning kisses.
The unrelenting worry of “am I doing enough?” and worrying if you’re raising a good human. A human who will hopefully be kind and considerate, but also strong willed and full of grit, because the world is full of beauty and disgrace, all at once.
Mothers can wage wars with their love. It is this profound love that keeps the world spinning.
I tell you this, because your motherhood is magic, even when the tasks are mundane, it’s still magic. It’s extraordinary, every part of it, even the overwhelming parts. It’s full of purpose, and passion, and deep, unwavering, unconquerable love. If you’re wondering if you’re getting it right, if you’re wondering if you’re enough, please know with perfect conviction that God chose you to be their mother, he put you together.
Motherhood is a beautiful, brilliant, sometimes daunting journey. With all my heart, I hope you’ll enjoy it.
