One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, October 29, 1924.)
Sheriff Marion Stephens went Saturday morning to Omaha, NE, to get Cleo McMichaels of Havelock, NE and Howard Baker of Grant City, MO, who were wanted on the charge of having stolen a radiator and tools from Hugh Hartley’s garage a week ago Friday.
The third nutrition lesson on milk and it’s products was given at the home of Mrs. Allen Humphrey Tuesday, October 14. The following menu was prepared: potatoes boiled in their skins, escalloped cabbage, pimento and cottage cheese sandwiches, baked custard and cocoa.
Mrs. M.S. Austin brought a cottage cheese pie, which was something new. Mrs. Humphrey served fruit salad and some other refreshments. There were thirteen ladies present with Mrs. O.H. Maudlin the leader.
The Prentis Hatchery recently purchased a new Mammoth Buckeye incubator which holds approximately 14,000 eggs, weighs 6,800 lbs., is equipped with automatic turning trays and possesses an outside thermometer which registers the inside temperature. The machine is probably one of the most perfect devises ever invented for the hatching of baby chicks in a commercial way.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Rapid progress is being made in the construction of the new Ringgold County Hospital in Sheldon Heights in Mount Ayr. Concrete work is well under way and it is anticipated that the foundation work and concrete walls will be completed by the end of this week.
Three Mount Ayr men were highly honored last Wednesday when they received honorary degrees in farming conferred by the Mount Ayr Chapter of FFA, one of the top ranking FFA organizations of the nation. The men honored were O.C. Varner, Harold Ross, and Franklin Spurrier.

Joan Fisher of MACHS has attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as a member of the 1974 All-State chorus. Joan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fisher of Mount Ayr and is a vocal student of Mrs. Kathleen Harover.
Break-ins at two Mount Ayr businesses were investigated by Sheriff Elbert Strange Tuesday morning. The sheriff said entry to Green Hills Inc., at the west edge of town, was gained by forcing a back door. A $20 bill and some small change was taken.
During the same time interval, entry to the Ames Cross, Inc. garage on west South Street was gained through an unlocked window. The sheriff said nothing had been taken.

After several months of talks, county-wide law enforcement will be a reality in Ringgold County effective November 1.
When sprint car driver Randy Smith had to retire from racing a couple years ago he and his son, Chad, began to develop an automatic car wash machine.
The “Blaster” washer has two pumps and three robots to wash all four sides of a vehicle at the same time, thus using less wash time than most other car washes.
Honored at Mount Ayr community homecoming were grand Marshals Karon and Larry Giles. Homecoming princess was Desirae Trammell and prince, Alex Sobotka.
MACHS’ Raider marching band picked up a division II rating when it traveled to the state marching band contest held in Des Moines.
Top finisher for the MAC Raiderettes in their best cross country meet placing of the year was Clara Terrell. Terrell placed 18th overall to help the squad to a 6th place finish at their own meet.

A team of local hoopsters will take on the Harlem Ambassadors professional show basketball team in a benefit game in Mount Ayr on October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gym. The event is a fund-raiser for the Mount Ayr Lions.
Local players comprising the “Lion Tamers” include, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Butler, Matt Weeda, Thad Streit, Jeff Levine, Mat West, Brandie Ruggles, Bret Ruggles, Scott Giles, Maria Weeda, Josh Hanawalt, Matt Henle, Zane Grey, Chris Elwood, Melissa Friedrich, Tiffany Bolles, Brandi Shay, Chad Smith, Cecil Dolecheck, Tanner Rinehart, Taylor Still, Nathan Weeda, Eddie Daily, Colton Bolles and Paul Glendenning.
Kyle Wilson of Clearfield, IA has received an Accounting Academic Achievement Award at AIB College of Business. higher.
