One Hundred Years Ago

While enroute from Blanchard Friday evening Lyndel Thompson struck a wolf in the road a short distance this side of Taylor-Ringgold county line on primary road #3.
Blinded by the headlights of the car, the animal ran directly in front of the machine, was knocked down and both front wheels ran over it. The bounty was claimed and the hide sold to the local buyer Dean Jacobs, the net proceeds amounting to $14.

The publication of a long list of income taxpayers in Des Moines has stimulated interest in the omissions to such an extent that a force of government officers are now making a sweeping investigation of bank accounts in an effort to make comparison with the amount reported for federal taxation with that on deposits in banks. It is claimed that 150 persons suspicioned as bootleggers are to be investigated.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The Methodist church of Beaconsfield and its contents were completely destroyed by fire early Saturday morning, only a few hour before activity was to get underway for the holding of the church’s annual dinner and God’s portion sale. The fire, which was concluded to have started in the furnace room, was discovered about 1:15 a.m. by Mrs. Carrie Daughton, whose residence is next to the church. The 36×50 foot brick structure was errected in 1911.
Upon Completion of 30 years with the US Postal Department, Alvin L. Lamoreaux, of this city will retire from active service on December 1st.
The G.C. Pollard grocery store in Kellerton was burglarized early Sunday morning with the loss of approximately $75 in cash. Entrance was gained to the building through a second story window.

Fifty Years Ago

Joe Pulliam of Mount Ayr had double trouble Saturday night or Sunday morning. That’s when both his trailer home at Payne’s Trailer Court and his business, Joe’s Apco Station, were entered and burglarized. Mount Ayr policeman Rudy Saville investigated the incidents.
Sheriff Elbert Strange said Tuesday that several more incidents of slaughtered cattle have been reported to his office in recent weeks.
Quentin Anderson of Beaconsfield reported a slaughtered cow. And on November 10, two beeves were slaughtered along the roadside northeast of Mount Ayr, with non owner reported.
A former Mount Ayr Community high school wrestler is listed on the roster of NW Missouri State University wrestling squad. He is Duane Burchett son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Burchett. A sophomore, Duane, competes in the 134 and 142 pound divisions.

An injunction against building a replacement club house at Sun Valley Lake remains in effect until a December hearing sets damages to Sky View Financial Inc., for loss of offices in the old club house that is being demolished.
A Ringgold county student at Simpson College in Indianola has been named to the 1999 edition of the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Tami Trullinger of Tingley joins an elite group, including 46 Simpson students from some 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states.
Rachel Sobotka a MACHS 8th grader was one of four clarinet players selected to participate in the state of Iowa 8th grade honor band recently.
Marriage: August 14, Tina Anderson and Chris Ambrose.

Ten Years Ago

Coming off an 11 win season and a state playoff final-four appearance the Mount Ayr Raiders are well represented in the 2014 all district football squad. Named to the Class 2A District 8 all district teams were: Nick Wurster, Lincoln Lutrick, Riley Weehler, Joe Ricker, Jake Ricker, Tucker Winemiller, Grant Staats, Jacob Taylor, Caleb Schnoor, Tyler Triggs, Connor Giles, Jed McCreary, Rhett Murphy, Blake Butler, Logan Stark, Kyle Dolecheck and Lincoln Martin.
Teena Petersohn and her support group consisting of her daughters, Erica Hagfield and Meg Petersohn, her sisters Twila Swartz and Terry Giles and her two nieces Amy Swanson and Elly Swanson recently returned from Teaneck, NJ where they attended the biennial Life Raft Group Conference-Life Fest 2014. The three day conference was for those affected by GIST (Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor), a rare cancer that Teena was diagnosed with in 2011.
Births: November 12 a son, Timothy, to Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Smith.
