One Hundred Years Ago

Carl Hough of Bedford gets life sentence for the murder of Lillian McKenney. Time will be served at Fort Madison prison.
A cut of $25 in the price of the Fordor sedan, one of the most popular of the Ford enclosed cars was announced by the Ford Motor Co. late Monday afternoon.
The new list on Ford Cars FOB Detroit are as follows: Fordor Sedan $660-$685; Tutor Sedan $580-$590; Coupe $520-$525; Touring Car $290-$295; Runabout $260-$265; Ford Chassis $225-$230 and Ford 1-ton truck chassis $365-$370.
Community Christmas will be held December 24 at 4 o’clock from the band stand. All kiddies present to receive a sack of good candy. The Camp Fire Girls will visit the sick and shut-ins the afternoon of Christmas day, singing Christmas carols and leaving a sack of candy. The community Christmas is made possible through gifts from business men, clerks, and friends.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Damages of $2,300 were awarded William E. Handley, of Woodburn, plaintiff, in the case of Handley vs. Scott, which was heard this week in district court in Mount Ayr.
The suit was filed by Handley, who was asking for $7,500 personal damages and $933 car damages following an accident in which cars driven by Handley and the defendant, Kenneth Scott, a Mount Ayr high school senior, were involved on March 3, 1949, one-half mile west of Mount Ayr.
John E. Freeland went last week to Fremont, NE, where on January 1 he will assume his duties as manager of the Fremont Master Mart.

Fifty Years Ago

Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held 11 a.m. Monday morning on the new state liquor store in Mount Ayr. Jerry Marler will manage the store with Melvin Adams assisting 20 hours a week.
Mount Ayr users will start paying higher bills come January 1, 1975. That’s the effect of ordinance #164, passed recently by the Mount Ayr city council. Under new rates, the minimum for town residents will be $4.50 per month for up to 2,000 gallons. As a comparison of rates, a resident using 5,000 gallons a month is paying $6.25 per month; under the new rates the charge will be $9.30 per month.
Suzanne K. Henry, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry of Mount Ayr enlisted in the Air Force delayed enlistment program with ceremonies held at Fort Des Moines November 21.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The burning ban is still in effect in Ringgold county and will be until there is a notice in the Mount Ayr Record News that the ban has been lifted. That’s the word this week from Merle Walter, Ringgold County Emergency Management director.
Mount Ayr Community 7th grade girls baseball team won it’s second game of the season Tuesday November 23 when they defeated Murray 25-12 at Murray.
Alycia Clymer led the way with 12 points. Morgan Rumple scored five, Alana Johnson put in 4 and BreAnn McDonnell and Trisha Henry both had two each. Clymer had 12 rebounds to top the team and Alana Johnson had six. Morgan Rumple led the team in steals with 4 and Trisha Henry had 3.
Two Ringgold County women have been appointed to serve as co-chairpersons for the George W. Bush presidential campaign. Texas governor George W. Bush announced this week that he has appointed Linda Sickels of Kellerton and Karen Bender of Mount Ayr to serve on the campaign in the county.

Ten Years Ago

A class field trip for a group of Mount Ayr elementary students was recently featured in an article in a national publication.
Karen Taylor takes her second grade students on a field trip to complete the year in social studies. They visit several businesses around the community, and the owner and workers tell the students about their day-to-day functions and gives the kids a tour that patrons would not normally see.
As part of their tour, the students usually visit various offices in the courthouse. When district court judge Gary Kimes heard the class would be visiting during a time he was having court, he came up with the idea to have them watch the court in session.
A small fire caused minor damage to the Diagonal elementary school Monday night. According to school officials, an outside light on the southeast corner of the building shorted out, damaging the roof.

MAC graduate Blake Haugland recently competed in an Ironman endurance competition while on his honeymoon with his wife Melissa in Cozumel, Mexico.
