One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, December 31, 2024).
Only three changes in the personnel of officers at Ringgold County will be made at the beginning of the new year.
County Auditor E.E. Cornwall will be succeeded by Clarence Palmer, County Treasurer, Earle K. Allyn will be succeeded by Milly Lucy Kidney and George B. Smith will succeed Alfred Pettis as member of the board of supervisors.
Everett Pine accidentally shot himself in the foot last week and is going about on crutches.
While there is in 1924 no terrific disaster as the Japanese earthquake of the previous year, the list of quakes, conflagrations (large fires), mine explosions, tornadoes and other visitations was long and the loss of life was heavy.
The Red Cross was kept busy throughout the year. The worst of these occurrences were as follows: January 3, explosion in starch factory in Pekin, IL, 36 killed; January 10, British submarine with crew of 43 sunk in a collision; January 15 & 16 severe earthquakes in Japan, India and Columbia; January 26, coal mine explosion at Shanktown, PA 40 killed; February 5, 42 killed when pond broke through into iron mine near Crosby, MN; March 1, explosion of TNT at Nixon, NJ, 18 killed; March 4, San Jose, Costa Rica, half wrecked by quake; March 8, mine explosion at Castle Gate, UT, 175 killed; March 26, landslide near Amalfl, Italy, killed 100; April 28, mine explosion at Wheeling, W.VA, fatal to 111; April 30, destructive and fatal tornadoes in southern states; May 27, tornadoes in south killed 45; May 28, Bucharest arsenal blew up with great loss of life; May 31, 22 inmates of defective girls’ school in California burned to death; June 12, turrent explosion on battleship Mississippi, killed 48; June 28, tornado killed 150 and did vast damage at Lorain, OH; In August, thousands killed in floods in China and Formoas, and 80 lives lost in Virgin Island hurricane; September 16, mine explosion at Sublet, WY, killed 39; September 21, storms in Wisconsin fatal to 58; October 20, 14 killed by explosion on USS Trenton; November 12, hundreds of lives lost in earthquakes in Java; November 14 and 16, destructive conflagrations in Jersey City, NJ.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The Dolecheck Store in Diagonal, owned and operated by D.D. Dolecheck for 49 years, was purchased this week by T. Harry Liggett of this city. Possession to be given January 16.
Four boys are still in the running for the purebred gilt to be awarded by the Mount Ayr Lions Club to some 4-H member in the county according to Harold Webb, Lions Club president. The boys are Rex Galloway of Redding, Kenneth Weeda of Tingley, J.R. Wells of Mount Ayr and Loren Miller of Diagonal.
The Mount Ayr Raiders handed Diagonal a 52-39 defeat on the Mount Ayr floor Tuesday night before a packed house. In what usually proves to be the season’s thriller, Mount Ayr outplayed and out scored the Maroons for the complete period in the second tiff of the season. Eason paced the winners with 14 points while Linkvis counted 12 for the Maroons.

Fifty Years Ago

Deaths out numbered births by seven during the fourth quarter in Ringgold county according to figures released by Rollin Noble, clerk of court. Offical record show a total of 23 births, one adoption, 30 deaths, 14 marriages and nine dissolutions.
An ABC Cartage Co. semi-trailer bound for Mount Ayr was demolished when struck by a northbound Chicago and Northwestern railroad freight train about 7 a.m. Friday just north of Arispe. Merchandise in the trailer was scattered for some distances around the scene. Included in the shipment was a load of rocking chairs and end tables for Mount Ayr Health Care facility.

Winners of the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas lighting contest were announced this week, 1st Barbara and Harold Bowers, 2nd Ed and Jan Still and 3rd Todd and Julie England.
Long-time Mount Ayr council member, Raymond Hensley was presented a plaque recognizing 20 years on the city council.
Four Mount Ayr Community Raider basketball players return this season with letter winning experience. Letterwinners include: Dustin Eighmy, Jeremy Burmeister, Nolan Howie and Jaren Ricker.
Birth: December 14, a son Seth, to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Brown.

Ten Years Ago

Effective January 1 the Diagonal Progress newspaper will be under new ownership. Tom and Tami Hawley have purchased the publication from current owners Jim and Patty Newton.
Long-time Diagonal teacher Dick Stephens was honored last week during the Maroonette~Maroon double header basketball games. Lorna Paxon, seconday principal, presented him with a plaque.
If plans come together as expected, Ringgold County will soon be home to a brand new year round nature center according to Kate Zimmerman, Ringgold County Conservation director.
A new storm siren was recently installed in the city park of Blockton.
The Mount Ayr wrestling team defeated Nodaway Valley, East Union in a home triangular December 18 befor placing 6th at the POI Conference tournament last weekend.

Birth: December 15, a son, Oliver, to Katie Waske and Michael Meek.
