One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, January 28, 1925.)
Kellerton is to again have a moving picture show. Mr. Kremer, manager of the picture theater at Mount Ayr, has men busy preparing the south half of the building owned by the Slentz Estate, formerly occupied by Frisby & Co., expects to have the building ready for the 1st show one week from Saturday night.
Monte Montrose, whose real name is Charlie Grindrod, came Wednesday to visit a few days at the C.E. Reynolds home, but on Thursday received a wire which called him to Kansas City where he will join a stock company with which he is signed for 1 year.
Monte is well known here, having at one time lived in Kellerton, and has been in the show business for a number of years. He was in Chicago this winter in a vaudeville act that was scoring quite a hit, but owing to illness of his partner the act had to be discontinued, so he is again in the stock work.
General Supply Co. announces the purchase of the Wall grocery store on the north side of the square. Possession was given Monday of this week. Wall Grocery has been an established institution of Mount Ayr since 1880, being conducted by the late John Wall.
Many were disappointed because cloudiness made the view of the eclipse invisible Saturday.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The Sandwich Shop in Mount Ayr, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Pratt for two years was sold this week to Glen Hutchinson and Don Sobotka, both restaurant operators in Mount Ayr.
The 32 annual Ringgold County boys basketball tournament opened Tuesday in Mount Ayr with Benton edging out Tingley in an over-time thriller. The final count was Benton 50, Tingley 46.
In the second contest of the evening, the scrappy Beaconsfield team gave the powerful Mount Ayr Raiders a rough time for 2 quarters, the score being 26-21 at the intermission. However, the Raiders returned to the floor to more than double the score.
It is anticipated that the gymnasium will be packed tonight when Diagonal Maroons and the Mount Ayr Raiders tangle in what is expected to be an outstanding contest of the tournament.
Nelson and Lynch are now operating their hog buying business in the new barn which they recently constructed on Hwy 2 & 169 at the west edge of Mount Ayr. Facilities include a new set of scales.

A 25” color TV set, a stereo set, 300 records, 8 track tapes and four guns were all missing from the Kyle Shaha farm residence seven miles southeast of Mount Ayr following a break in Friday January 24.
More than 1,000 persons attended the open house Sunday of the new Mount Ayr Health Care Center, Inc., according to owner Joe Gross.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed approximately 50-60 bales of hay stored on a lowboy at the Lee Terwilliger farm about four miles northeast of Mount Ayr.
Hy-Vee Food Store, Inc. of Chariton, has announced that it opened it’s 100th store Tuesday, January 28 at Keokuk.

Amber Taylor was crowned Ringgold County beef queen for 2000 at the annual meeting of the Ringgold Cattlemen and Cattlewomen held Saturday night.
The Ringgold County Public Health agency has hired Julie McKern as Ringgold County Parents as Teachers (PAT) coordinator.
Winning titles at the tough John J. Harris wrestling tournament in Corning Friday and Saturday were Joey King at 189 lbs and Brett Shields at 119 lbs, who won a title for the 3rd straight year.
When referees did not show up at Nodaway Valley gymnasium Tuesday January 18, the boys and girls varsity basketball games had to be postponed.
Denise Golliday, Paula Richards, and Helen Moore have recently been hired to coordinate Ringgold County Supportive Services, an adult day care program in Mount Ayr. The program will be started mid February and will teach life skill development and sponsor leisure activities for area mentally challenged adults.

Ten Years Ago

Security at public facilities is a growing concern, considering recent well publicized cases of violence at public meetings across the nation. in a pro-active step following a courthouse security meeting the Ringgold count supervisors approved a plan to limit entrances to the courthouse and to lock all interior doors to rooms not currently in use.
Tegan Streit won her age group (8-9 year old girls) in the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest in Creston January 10. She advanced on to districts which was held on January 24 in Des Moines, where she won her age division to advance to State.
Three speech entries to state~MACH speech team have advanced to state competition after performing at the district contest Saturday January 24. State contest is February 7 at Valley High school in West Des Moines.
Those advancing are: short film, Lew Knapp, Macy Lilienthal and Justin Wehling; short film: Kody Weeda, Alex Young and Elizab eth King; and improvisation team of Shelbie Greene and Lew Knapp.
MAC was the recipient of the additional $5,000 bonus in this region for the Chrysler Ride & Drive Event sponsored by Glendenning Motor Co. Lloyd Glendenning, Paul Glendenning, Todd Glendenning and Lywanda Case presented the check. Chrysler and Glendenning Motors have donated $12,600 through this program to the school in the past 2 years thanks to Raider fans who took the time to take a test drive and fill out the survey.Birth: January 7, a son, Rowan, to Burt and Molly Murphy.
