Looking Back

One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 4, 1925.)
A new electric sign, advertising the Kelley Springfield tires, was installed recently at the Tingley Service station. It shows up nice only when it rains a little dampness seems to put out our lights.
Last reports from the horseshoe pitching tournament at Fort Worth, FL, indicate that Frank Jackson will finish in 3rd place. Jackson set a wonderful record in the elimination games, finishing first, but did not hold up quite as well in the finish.
Lesley Dennis and Alex Saltzman finished sawing about forty-five cords of wood for Rowe Denney and Emerson Saltzman Thursday.
March 2~North Washington~ There has been quite a lot of moving the past week and the roads have been in bad condition for moving.
Archie Bailey moved last week to the Huss farm and Gene Huss moved to Des Moines. Will Ruby will live on the Byerly farm near Benton this season and a Mr. Hargin will occupy the Heaton farm vacated by Mr. Ruby. PD Wood will move to the Wolford farm north of Clearfield, Kenneth Parkins to a farm near Delphos and Floyd Uglow from near Tingley to the Dennis Hawk farm. Tenant farmers typical had a contract agreement with land owners for a 50/50 share and contracts ran from March to March of following year.
Marriage: February 18, Helen Rupert and Charles Ouderkirk…February 17, Kathryn Mullin and Louis Moore…Louise Siple and Leslie Ballon slipped away to Leon last Thursday and were quietly married.
Births: February 24, a son, George, to Rev. and Mrs. John Meloy…February 26, a daughter, Betty, to Mr. and Mrs. John Wion.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Yesterday assistant postmaster C.E. Hollopeter commenced his second forty years of service to the patrons of the Mount Ayr post office.
Former resident killed by gangster in Oklahoma. Relatives in Ringgold county recently received word of the tragic death of Martin Lyle “Bert” Shaffer, 68 year-old retired policeman of Oklahoma City, OK. Mr. Shaffer died Februry 1 from bullet wounds received while he was serving as night watchman at the city disposal plant in Oklahoma City.
Birth: Tuesday a son, William, to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jennings.

Fifty Years Ago

A building formerly leased as Sunny Slope Nursing Home and before that occupied by the Ringgold County Home, and the 20 acres of land that go with it were sold at auction Wednesday, February 28, for $12,700 to Ernest (Sandy) Stringham.
Diana Triggs of Mount Ayr exhibited the champion pen of three market pigs in the 22nd annual Creston 4-H spring market swine show. She won her championship on a pen of three Duroc-Spotted Crossbred market pigs which weighed 230 pounds each.
The Mount Ayr Public Library now offers free library service to all citizens of Ringgold county. They will no longer be charged any membership fees, retro-active to January 1, 1975.
Horne Rexall Pharmacy located on the north side of the square, will have a new look following the remodeling of the front of the store begun this week.
Mrs. Leon Huff (Patti Stull) and her 2 1/2 year old daughter, Dawn, left Saturday March 1 for Tel Aviv, Israel, to join Mr. Huff who is playing basketball and is an assistant coach of a team playing in a league similar to the US NBA and ABA League. Huff is playing with a team of Americans, the Israel Sabras, who play in a league known as the International Basketball Association.
Birth: March 3, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Marion Jones…February 25, a daughter, Tracy, adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Barry Wyman.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Earning the opportunity to compete at the National Business Professionals of America Convention in Minneapolis, MN were Dara Creveling and Molly Lynch.
Ringgold County residents will need to learn a new area code beginning June 1. A large portion of the present 515 area code will now be using 641 as their area code as the calling area is divided.
Royalty were selected at the Valentine’s Day party at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr recently. Named royalty for the day were Joyce Chittim and Richard Waddel.
When the all Iowa Honor Drill team makes its seventeenth appearance at the girls state basketball tournament Saturday, March 11 at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines, a Mount Ayr Community senior drill team captain, Angie Shields will be taking part in the performance.
Marriage: October 2, 1999, Janelle Walters and Mark Davison.

Ten Years Ago

Max Mekus, DVM recently received a certificate from Ringgold County Public Health director Becky Fletchall, recognizing his retirement after 26 years of service on the Board of Health.
Mount Ayr lineman Joe Ricker has been chosen as the 8th player in Raider history to participate in all Iowa Shrine Bowl.
Tegan Streit placed fourth at the state hoop shoot in Oskaloosa on February 21 for the 8-9 year old girls age group.
Obituaries in this edition were Brylee Dixon Ramsbottom, Vanita “Maxine” Drake Barnett, Elizabeth Adeline Thompson Hunt, Herbert Wayne Lockard and Kenneth Gene Swigart.
