One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 18, 1925.)
Fixing the wage of farm hands for the coming crop season is engaging the attention of Farm Bureaus in various sections of the state. In Audubon county the directors of the Farm Bureau recommended that $45-$50 per month be paid for farm help in that county this year, and $2-$2.50 per day for labor. That included board and laundry work. The board also decided to offer a reward of $100 for the arrest and conviction of any party stealing chickens from a Farm Bureau member.
Several people including some of the high school pupils listened to the address by President Coolidge at the B.F. Seaton place last Wednesday over the radio.
As an indication of returning prosperity Billie Finch, the Mount Ayr wholesale buyer and car load shipper of poultry, butter and eggs, calls attention to the fact the egg market has been from 7-9 cents higher since January 1st than it was during the same period a year ago. A year ago today the market price was 17 cents a dozen and today it is 26 cents.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Ninety-four percent of the voters at the regular school election held Monday in Kellerton favored the proposition of issuing bonds in the amount of $38,000 for the purpose of erecting a school building to be used for vocational agriculture and gymnasium.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Klejch who have been employed in Omaha, NE, are moving to the Joe Klejch farm southeast of Diagonal.
Ringgold County was well represented in the sub-state tournament as Diagonal won the Class B title and Mount Ayr the Class A title in the boy’s district basketball tournament held in Mount Ayr. Diagonal downed Redding 51-31 and romped past College Springs 58-25. Mount Ayr won two exciting games by edging past Lenox 53-50, and Winterset 65-57. Jack Braby, of Mount Ayr set the single game scoring record of the tournament by hitting 26 against Winterset. Bob Ricker of Diagonal hit 21 points against Osceola, Arispe, and College Springs.

Fifty Years Ago

Nine students inducted into MACH Honor Society. Inducted March 10th were Kerry Burright, Teresa Davis, Marcia Ford, David Allen, Cathy Foltz, David Roed, Becky Morrison, Trudy Smith, and Marla Wilkins.
Weekend break-ins in Mount Ayr have been reported with $320 being taken from the Standard Station operated by John Denhart. Place’s store was broken into for the second time in three weeks but nothing was taken.
At Fina Station, on east of the Standard Station on Hwy 2, tire changing tools that were left outside of the building were taken.
On the square the South Side Tavern operated by Linn Sheil, Sunday morning noticed that an attempt had been made to gain entrance to the tavern, through a back door. Monday night, March 10, a rifle, a pistol, wrenches and two-way radio were reported missing from a pickup owned by Eric Fell.
Bob Shafer began duties Monday as secretary-manager of Ringgold Mutual Ins. Assoc. He will have his office in the building just north of the northeast corner of the Mount Atyr town square. He assumes the position formerly held by Bob Erickson, new owner of Roe Implement.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Mount Ayr will soon have a new option for people who need some care but do not need the full service of a nursing facility. Construction is planned to begin in April on a 12 unit assisted living addition to Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Joe Routh, administrator of Clearview Homes announced.
Mount Ayr community sixth grade math team did well at the AEA Math bees in Creston Thursday. The 6th grade team tied for 1st with Creston in the competition. Lyndon Triggs took second, Cody Sobotka was 3rd, Tanner England 4th, and Adam Jackson was 6th in the individual scorings.
After twenty-six years of service to Ringgold county, Velda Pierson steps down as an Income Maintenance Worker II from the Ringgold County Human Services office.
Marriage: September 18, Judi Schlapia and Travis Shaha.

Finally after months of planning and bidding and replanning and rebidding, at their regular meeting, March 16, the Mount Ayr city council awarded a contract for the street renovation project to Norris Asphalt Paving of Ottumwa.
A southern Iowa woman has won a $100,000 lottery prize. Janice “Kathy” Braby of Maloy claimed the eighth of twelve top prizes of $100,000 available in the Iowa Lottery’s $100,000 Mega Crossword instant scratch game.
