One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 25, 1925.)
One cent postage stamps will soon be a thing of the past. On April 15, the post offices all over the country will put in place of the old familiar on-cent stamp, a new stamp selling for 1 1/2 cents.
Iowa was once the abode of noted Indian chiefs whose activities in war and peace became the historical heritage of the commonwealth. Chief Keokuk died in Kansas but his bones now repose under the base of a monument erected to his memory in Rand’s Park, overlooking the Mississippi River at Keokuk, a city named after the great chief.
Blackhawk, the instigator of the Black Hawk War, historically important because of the noted American Generals who participated in it, lies buried on the banks of the Des Moines River in Davis county. Wapello, another Indian chief of note, is buried at Agency, in the county which bears his name. A modest grave-stone marks his last resting place upon which is the following inscription: “In memory of Wap Pello, a principal chief of the Foxes, who was born at Prairie du Chien about the year 1787. Died near the forks of the Skunk River, March 15, 1842; and here buried at his own request.
This stone was erected by the Sac and Fox Nation. Distinguished from early years for his valor he was no less remarkable for kindness and benebolence towards his people, while honesty of character and strict friendship towards the white man, won for him universal regard.”

Seventy-Five Years Ago

A dedicatory service for the Maas Chimes, recently installed in the Mount Ayr Methodist church, will be held Sunday afternoon, March 26 at 3 o’clock.
Monica Sheil, 13 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sheil of Maloy and and eighth grade student of Maloy schools, was selectred as winner of the Ringgold county spelling contest held Saturday.
Winner of 1st place in the reading contest for town schools was Rita Anne Warin. Rita is a seventh grade student of Maloy schools and is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Warin.
In the reading contest for rural schools, Anna Lynn Irving, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Irving, won 1st place. Anna is a 12 year-old student of the 7th grade of Liberty #3.
Ellston News: An epidemic of measles has hit this community. There were ten children absent from one room at school Friday and others sick in the community.
Marriage: March 5, Sara Clough and Don Reese…Saturday morning Charles Fredrick and Jean Mapel.
Birth: March 12, a daughter, Catherine, to Mr. and Mrs. Daytn Frost…March 4, a son, Terry, to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Weaver…March 13, a son, Ronald, to Mr. and Mrs. Marion Millsap.

Fifty Years Ago

Cecil Dolecheck of Kellerton has been selected by the Ringgold county Farm Bureau as the outstanding young farmer/rancher. He and Mrs. Dolecheck were honored at a district 9 meeting held at Red Oak Friday night.
Rich Johnnson has been named to the Associated Press Class A state tournament team although he appeared in just one game. The 6’2” senior scored 34 points, tournament high, and pulled down 13 rebounds in the Raiders 77-73 loss to Alta.
There was $106 taken from two cash registers at Ruth’s Cafe and coins and mustard scattered around sometime during the night and early morning on Thursday March 20. Entry was made by breaking the glass in a door and unlocking it.
Births: March 21, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shields…March 24 a daughter, Susan, to Mr. and Mrs. Rich Elmer.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Ringgold county has it’s first ties to an Oscar winning actress after Hilary Swank won the best actress award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Sunday night. Swank was nominated for her starring role as Branton Teena/Tenna Brandon in “Boys Don’t Cry,” role.
Shirley Brand of Mount Ayr won two medals in the 20th annual Golden Age Olympics bowling events held in McAllen, TX this winter. Brand bowled the high scratch series and the high hame series for women in the bowling tournament which attracted over 1,000 men and women. Brand bowled a 212 scratch high game and a 585 high scratch series.
Marriage: October 2, 1999, Jenny Shields and Robert O’Brien.
Birth: March 26, a son, Evan, to Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Smith.

Ten Years Ago

A Mount Ayr sixth grader is being credited with saving his grandfather’s life after performing a Heimlich procedure Sunday. Charles Mickael of Mount Ayr was eating dinner Sunday when a piece of food became loodged in his throat and was severly choking. His grandson, Cameron, jumped up and grabbed his grandfather from behind and thrust his lower abdomen, dislodging a piece of meat.
The biggest news from Clearfield this week was the fire at the redemption center owned by Cecil and Dorothy Smith.
MACHS track coach Brad Elliott has won Postive Coaching Alliance’s coveted Double Goal Coach Award presented by TeamSnap for his positive impact on young athletes. Elliott is one of 25 national recipients of the Double Goal Coach award, named for coaches who strive to win while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching lifes lessons through sports.
