Diagonal and Mount Ayr Community School students undertook 43 different service projects around Ringgold County Wednesday, April 23. HELP Pod service day projects were requested by various businesses and organizations leading up to the annual event.
Diagonal Projects
Several large scale clean up projects were coordinated around Diagonal. Students helped with highway trash pickup, Diagonal Cemetery cleanup, and two small groups picked up brush/trash and mulched and landscaped the community building and street corner.
The Diagonal junior class went to the Printing Museum to rake leaves and pick up sticks.
Clean-up and painting was undertaken at Fogle Lake. Additionally, a few students helped with classroom projects at Diagonal School.
Mount Ayr Projects
The largest HELP Pod service day project involved coordinating a Shred-It Truck at a cost of $1,200. The two-hour shredding service was sponsored by local banks and HELP dollars. A handful of students provided service at the event and delivered cardboard to B&M Recycling.
Park clean up included mulching, weeding flower beds, cleaning the community book shed, and staining the gazebo at Mabel Rice Park. A group of FFA students helped with tree plantings at Fife’s Grove and picked up debris at Poe Hollow Park. Students also spread mulch, picked up sticks at Judge Lewis Park. The Shellway Drive triangle garden also benefited from spring clean up.
At the DNR Fish Hatchery, students helped cut down little trees. Students also picked up trash and stained picnic tables at Loch Ayr Lake.
Cleaning projects, outdoor pick brush pickup, gardening, and other projects were also coordinated at several churches including Lighthouse Christian Center, Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, and Missio Church.
Around town, students cleaned out flower beds, pulled weeds, prepared raised garden beds and organized the big shed at the Mount Ayr Community Garden and Ringgold Outdoor Alliance building.
Students cleaned up and swept the Fire Station, washed fire trucks, and raked gravel out of the grass.
At the Public Library, and the Senior Center, students cleaned up the yard, raked, prepped flower beds, and washed windows. Students also cleaned woodwork and seats at the Princess Theater and Teen Center.
Around the Ringgold County Courthouse, students picked up the lawn and mulched around the flower beds and bushes.
The Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club benefited from clubhouse and cart sheds cleanup, golf balls and stick pick up, along with other outdoor work. Students also went across the street to pickup brush and trash at the Mount Ayr American Legion.
Students cleaned up the barns, raked leaves, and painted at the Ringgold County Fairgrounds.
A small group of students went to Ringgold County Supportive Services to play games and hang out with clients, and help with maintenance and cleaning tasks that included sweeping the shed, cleaning out vans, and weeding flower beds.
At Mount Ayr Healthcare, students raked leaves, cleaned up trash, and picked up brush around the outside of the building. Students also assisted with exercise groups and a small activity after bingo at Clearview Nursing Home and Estates.
School Grounds Projects
Some groups of MACHS students stayed close to the school grounds to clean the prom closet, prop room, and rake leaves and mulch around the Elementary school building.
The MACHS softball center field, shed, and press box were weeded and picked up. Banners were also put up on the back of the dugouts.
Other Town Projects
A small group of students picked up sticks and limbs at the Shannon City Cemetery.
In Ellston, students moved furniture from the shed to the school, did yard work, weeding, cleaned flower beds and other cleaning projects around the town and the Pioneer Museum. Students also picked up sticks on golf carts all day at Sun Valley Lake Golf Course.
Around Tingley, students cleaned up the ball field, picked up yards, assisted with Memorial Park cleanup, and cleaned up ditches.
At the Waubonsie Center in Benton, students cleaned cupboards, wiped tables and other basic cleaning. They also picked up limbs and branches, and fixed fences.
In Kellerton, students cleaned the Community Center, the park and helped at the Kellerton Food Bank.
