A barn in Ringgold county is one of the latest to receive a grant from the Iowa Barn Foundation for restoration work.
On Hwy 2 east of Mount Ayr is a landmark barn built in 1928 which is being restored.
Solomon Lesan, one of the first settlers in the county, obtained his farm from the government in 1855.
Eventally there were several farmsteads owned by the Lesans, making up the village of Lesanville.
The Lesanville Cemetery, started in 1879, is 300 yards from the barn, near the site of the railroad depot, post office and general store.
Paul Ramsey, whose mother was Madge Lesan, watched the barn being built in 1928 by well-known barn builder Carl Hogue.
He has received an $8,000 matching grant from the Iowa Barn Foundation to rehabilitate the barn on the farm, which has remained in the family throughout most of its history.
Lesan’s great grandfather, George W. Lesan, was believed to be the first postmaster in the county in the 1850’s. He brought the mail by horseback from Chariton before railroad delivery to Lesanville.
The barn restoration is part of a project to restore some of the Lesanville area.
Some $117,000 in matching grants have been awarded to Iowans by the Iowa Barn Foundation for the restoration or rehabilitation of barns since the foundation was started in 1977.
The proposed relocation of the sewer on the east side of homes along West Street north of Kneedler Street may be dead.
With at least one resident in the area saying they would not participate in paying extra for the relocation and another bringing figures to show that it would be cheaper to hook to the sewer in the west side location than paying for the changes, the proposal to move the sewer line may not be feasible.
