The Mount Ayr Raiders are one of the hottest teams right now in the Pride of Iowa Conference.
This comes after the Raiders won four straight games that followed their first loss of the season on May 30.
The wins over East Union, Clarke, Lenox, and Murray set the Raiders’ record at 6-1 and 3-1 in the POI. The Raiders have a pair of road games at POI leading Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Tuesday, June 10, and then at SW Valley in Corning the next day on Wednesday.
The Raiders return home on Thursday when they host Wayne. The Raiders’ next game is next week is Monday, June 16, at home against Central Decatur.
The first game of the week was the second game of the season against East Union. The Raiders beat East Union on May 27, 7-0 in Afton, and came up with a 7-5 win over the Eagles at home last Monday, June 2.
East Union led 2-1 after the first inning and extended their lead to 5-1 going to the bottom of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mount Ayr grabbed the lead with a 6-run inning in taking a 7-5 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Drew Graham was the winning pitcher after working five innings and striking out seven. He did not walk a batter and gave up five unearned runs on seven hits. Tate Dugan also pitched two innings in relief and had four strikeouts and walked two in a pair of scoreless innings. Mount Ayr had six hits in the game, led by Tate Dugan, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI. Adler Reed had a home run and 2 RBI’s. Hayes Stogdill, Rowan Sackett, and Avery Wolfe all had hits and an RBI. Graham drove in the other run.
On June 5, the Raiders beat non-conference foe Clarke 5-4. The Raiders had to come back from trailing 2-1 after four innings to get the win. Mount Ayr took a 4-2 lead with a three-run fifth, but watched the Indians tie the score with a two-run sixth. Mount Ayr would take a one-run lead in the top of the seventh, setting the score at 5-4. Mount Ayr held the Indians off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. The win snapped a two-game win streak for Clarke over Mount Ayr.
Mount Ayr had seven hits in the game, led by Adler Reed, who was 2-for-3 with three runs, a home run, and 3 RBI’s. Hayes Stogdill, Rowan Sackett, Jaxsen Walter, Tyler Still, and Trevin Victor all had hits in the game. Stogdill drove in two runs. Walter was the winning pitcher in the game after working five innings of 4-run baseball. He gave up seven hits, struck out five, and didn’t walk a batter. Trevin Victor pitched two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
The next night, the Raiders beat Lenox, 9-5, in conference play. The Raiders trailed 3-0 in the second inning, but took control of the ball game with a big second inning where they scored seven runs to take a 7-3 lead. The Raiders did not trail again. The Raiders scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to lead 9-3 going to the seventh.
Adler Reed started for Mount Ayr and was the winning pitcher. Reed went five and two-thirds innings, struck out nine, walked six, and gave up three runs on three hits. Trevin Victor pitched an inning and a third in relief and struck out four batters.
The Raiders had a dozen hits and had four players with multi-hit games. Adler Reed and Jaxsen Walter each had three hits, while Hayes Stogdill and Tate Dugan each had two hits. Rowan Sackett had a home run and drove in three runs. Victor had two RBI’s and Reed, Stogdill, Tate Dugan each had RBI’s. The other hits came from Tyler Still.
Lenox was led at the plate by Dawson Evans and Laramie Stoakes, who each had home runs and two RBI’s. Evans was 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers in batting. Four pitchers logged time for the Tigers. Gabe Funk took the loss after starting and getting into trouble in the second inning. Funk gave up five runs on four hits in an inning and a third.
The fourth straight win was at Murray on Monday night, June 9, by a score of 18-5. The run total was the second time this year that Mount Ayr has scored 10 or more runs in a game. The run total set a new season high in runs scored in a game this season.
The Raiders took command of the game in the first inning, batting around in their lineup and dropping ten runs on the Mustangs. The Raiders led 16-0 before Murray scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mount Ayr led 18-2 in the fifth before the Mustangs scored three times in the bottom of the order. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy-run rule.
Mount Ayr improved to 6-1 while Murray fell to 2-4.
The Raiders had 10 hits in the game, with three players having multi-hit games. Rowan Sackett had a game, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, 7 RBI’s, and two runs scored. Jaxsen Walter and Tate Dugan each had two hits. Other Mount Ayr hits came from Adler Reed and Tyler Still. Dugan drove in three, Walter and Still each with two RBI’s, and Stogdill had one RBI. Reed and Still had doubles, and Mount Ayr stole eight bases in the game, led by Adler Reed and Jaxsen Walter with two stolen bases each.
Rowan Sackett was the winning pitcher after four innings of work. Sackett struck out three, walked four, and gave up two runs on two hits. Tyler Still pitched an inning of relief.
