One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, July 15, 1925.)
Frank Jackson of Kellerton, ex-national horseshoe pitching champion and Cecil Freel of Murray, are touring the eastern states pitching exhibition games this summer.
Mrs. Bessie C. Evans of Afton was killed and H.M. Polen of Diagonal, was injured Saturday afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding collied with a binder on a bridge east of Creston on the Creston-Afton road. Mr. Polen is reported as recovering from his injuries. Details of the accident have not been received. A dispatch from Creston, published in the Des Moines Register this morning, states that a charge of manslaughter has been filed against Polen, driver of the car, and that he is held under $1,000 bond for driving while intoxicated.
Birth: July 3, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Lynn Sickels, of Kellerton and Wayne Buckner, of Lotts Creek township, have been selected as winners of the annual dairy contest sponsored by the Mount Ayr Businessmen’s club.
Robert E. Matthews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Matthews, of Diagonal vicinity, was taken to the Raymond Blank Memorial hospital in Des Moines, where he is receiving treatment for polio.
Bill Rusk won the fourth flight at Greenfield open golf tournament on Sunday, July 16, for which he was awarded a trophy.
Rusk defeated Welcher, of Des Moines in the finals 1 up in 10 holes. He shot a 43 and a 44 in winning his two afternoon matches.
It will be “The Old West” at the teenagers party to be held at the Country Club Thursday evening July 20. According to Bob Ross, member of the planning committee teenagers attending are urged to wear jeanes, ten gallon hats, bandanas, or other western garb to the party.
The new teenage committee, which was recently appointed includes Donald Daughton, Patty Main, Doris Toland, Joan Terwilliger, Jim Mahan and Bill Eddy.
David Irving, Garland Summers, Willie Corll, Alvin Varner, and Lyle Nichols went Saturday to St. Louis, MO. On Saturday they attended the baseball game between the Philadelphia Philles and the St. Louis Cardinals and Sunday witnessed the game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cardinals.

Dog owners in community have been cautioned to keep their pets under control. Mayor Amos Lee issued the warning following reports of several children in the community being bitten by dogs.
Rev. Karl Beasley, who has served as the Mount Ayr and Tingley United Presbyterian Churchs for the last four years, has resigned to accept a 12-month appointment as Chaplin at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City.
Judy Kiburz was selected as Ringgold County Beef queen following interviews held Tuesday evening, July 8, at a joint meeting of the Cow Belles and Cattlemen’s Association.
Marriage: June 7, Patricia Adkisson and Michael Adams.
Births: July 11, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Binnings..July 14, a son to Mr. and Mrs. William Dudek.

Amy Hynek of Beaconsfield was crowned queen of the Ringgold County Fair and Amanda Perrigo was crowned princess.
Market class winners named at the Ringgold County Fair as follows: grand champion market beef shown by Brett Hewlett; grand champion market hog shown by Eric Richardson; and grand champion market lamb shown by Matt Wimer.
Abby Stephens of Twin River Tornadoes 4-H club was selected out of seven girls participating in the clothing selection contest to advance to the state fair.
Ribbon cutting was held at Athena’s House located at 108 E. Madison in Mount Ayr. The card and gift shop is helping brighten up the block east of the square.
Hunters in Iowa harvested a record 121,308 deer during the 1999-2000 deer hunting season.
Marriage: July 7, Chad Holmes and Jamie Monaghan.
Birth: July 3, a son, Steven, to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Poore.

Ten Years Ago

Cooking Channel Mo Rocca and Mount Ayr’s Guelda Barker cooked a meal for a show which airs in September. Rocca was in town last weekend to film the show and participate in the Ayr Day’s parade.
Results of the Ringgold County Fair announced. Riley Jones showed the supreme heifer and Trey Fookin showed the champion market steer.
Boy Scout Troop 39 and Cub Scout Pack 39 of Mount Ayr were recently awarded a 2015 Governor’s Volunteer Award by Governor Terry Branstad.
