Richard “Dick” Hammond, Jr., 76, of Creston, formerly of Diagonal passed away Saturday August 16, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. Celebration of Life Memorial
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. The service will be live streamed. Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post will be providing full military honors. Private family burial will be at Diagonal Cemetery. The Creston B.P.O. Elks Lodge #605 will officiate the service. Memorials can be made to the family of Dick Hammond. Richard “Dick” Dean Hammond, Jr. was born July 28, 1949, in Clarinda, Iowa to Richard Dean Hammond, Sr. and Martha Alice (Bladon) Hammond. Dick graduated from Diagonal High School in 1967; he continued his education by attending Ottumwa Community College. Dick Proudly served his country as a part of the United States Army from 1969-1972 stationed in CuChi and Plantation/Long Binh during Vietnam.
In 1974, Dick was united in marriage to Marilyn Kaye McGuire in Creston, Ia. where they settled. From this union they were blessed with three children, Tiffini Knight, Ryan Hammond, and Atisha Bruce. They later divorced 1987.
Dick began his accounting career in Creston with Frank Bladon. In 1985, Dick started his own accounting firm which he ran until he retired. Dick was an active member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge # 605 in Creston where he was initiated in 1980. He has been a lifetime member totaling 46 years. He served as Exalted Ruler in 1996 and served as secretary for 15 years. He was awarded officer of the year in 2002, and he also was awarded the Elk of the year in 2004. Dick was also an active part of the Elks Clowns for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed birdwatching and feeding the squirrels, socializing with friends, visiting his grandchildren, and sports especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a huge Caitlin Clark fan.
Dick is survived by his three children, Tiffini (husband Jason) Knight of Creston, Ryan (wife Nikki) Hammond of Seattle, Wash. and Atisha Bruce of Creston; a sister Diana Turner (James Pinson) of Creston; six grandchildren, Brooklyn, Abbie, Owen, Ethan, Berkley, and Sloane.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Curt Turner.
