One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, September 2, 1925.)
Celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the High Point Church Wednesday August 19, brings to mind the years of long ago, when Ringgold County was engaged in making history. As the county was being settled up, the need of a church was voted. As time passed by and more settlers were coming in someone fortunately suggested that a church be built. This was during the fall of ‘74. The suggestion was looked upon with favor by the citizens of this community as they were without a suitable place for holding religious service.
Franklin H. Spurrier, son of the publisher of the Record News, has received from Congressman Lloyd Thurston of the eighth Iowa congressional district, a principal appointment as midshipman at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. and will this week enter a preparatory school with the view of making preparation for examination in February.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Eddie Lynch sold what is known as the T.S. Shay Sr. farm last week to Wilbur and Cleo Lynch.
Donald Eugene Buck, senior in the Mount Ayr high school has been adjudged first place winner in the Iowa Farm Electrification Contest in Iowa, and as an award has received a check in the amount of $100 from the FFA Foundation.
Mrs. Miller Christensen of this city and Charles Bailey, of Diagonal, were two of 75 mid-westerners who left Shenandoah yesterday on an 18-day tour of the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Alaska.
Petitions are being circulated throughout Ringgold county requesting the board of supervisors to submit the proposition of reducing the number of supervisors from 5 to 3 to the voters at the general election November 7, 1950.

Gayle Buckner, a Mount Ayr woman who has taught art here and has taken much interest in art circles, will have a private art show September 4 through the 11th.
Top point finishers in the modified class at Ringgold County Speedway in the season completed Sunday night were: winner, Lyle Main, Lloyd Glendenning, Jim Denney, Ron Johnson, Glen Hughes, Dan Hudson and Galen Miller.
Marriage: August 10, Mary Lay and Roger Stephenson..August 2, Nancy Sobotka and Rudy Saville.
Birth: August 29, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Denney.

Preliminary enrollment figures show decrease in all three Ringgold County area school districts for the 2000-01 school year. Diagonal loses 20, Mount Ayr community 9 and Clearfield six.
Bicycling from one coast to the other and back again to help raise awareness about cancer is the goal of Ernie Neupert of Baldwinsville, NY, who stopped through Mount Ayr last week.
Ribbon cutting at Blue Moon, located at 115 N Taylor Street was held by the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the opening of the new restaurant business in Mount Ayr. Blue Owners are Tracy Henry and Billie Jo Greene.
Several community members attended a retirement reception for Louise Stamper Tuesday afternoon at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. Louise has been the director of nursing since Clearview opened on February 5, 1963.

Ten Years Ago

All three incumbents won uncontested re-election to the Mount Ayr school board in the election held Tuesday. P.J. West, Brandi Shay and Craig Winemiller were elected in light voting.
In Diagonal, incumbents Pam Grace and Becky Stamps won re-election. They will be joined by newly elected Gina Gunsolley.
Sandy Taylor was honored by being named Grand Marshall of the Diagonal Lion’s Club Labor Day parade.
