One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, September 9, 1925.)
A pleasant gathering was held at the E.G. Sickels home in the Salem vicinity Sunday when a company of neighbors and friends from the Honey Grove school district, near Grant City, MO, drove up to spend the day with them. Well filled dinner baskets were brought along and dinner was served cafeteria style. Those present were Messrs. and Mesdames Silas Warden, Nal Golf, S.A. Nye and daughter Susie, Jim Korn, Homer Korn, Rex Sickels and daughter Dorothy and Miss Avis Pyle and Floyd Laird.
Superintendent A.B. Ward and family left Monday for Hamilton, IA, where he has a position in the school.
Some storm damage was reported by wind and hail during the rain storm Monday evening. Hail did some damage in the Delphos vicinity and in the southern part of Poe township and northern part of Lotts Creek township trees were blown down and some property damage resulted. The silo on Carl Lunney farm was blown down and the barn damaged and a seperator at the May farm was turned over.
Thompson Brothers Service Station is now ready for business at the new station, one block north of the northeast corner of th square, on Depot Street.

Births: August 26, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Scott..August 30, a daughter, Alberta, to Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Cassady.
Seventy-Five Years Ago

Three reservists ordered to active duty. Lyle L. Dulany, enlisted reservist, is the first from this county to be called to active duty by the Iowa military district, and will report September 30 at Fort Hood, TX for reception processing and assignment, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Truman Dulany.
Nick Duros, also reservist, has received orders to report today (Thursday), Mr. Duros is a partner of Leo Hacker in the ownership and operation of the new West End Market in Mount Ayr.
Three outstanding soil conservation-minded farmers from Ringgold County, attended the 1949-50 Goodyear Soil Conservation awards program and dinner held in Des Moines this week. Those attending were Mike Morgan and Sam Austin of Mount Ayr, Howard Townsend of Benton, and Dick Franklin County Extension Director and Ralph Long, District Commisioner of Mount Ayr.

Fifty Years Ago

The weather man blessed the opening of the Mount Ayr celebration with perfect weather, clear skies, little or no breeze, and temperatures in the 70’s.
Ninety youngsters participated in the greased pig contest held at the show arena on the fair grounds Monday afternoon. Winners in the 7-8 year olds, Scott Pollock; 9-10 year olds, Jeff South; 11-12 year olds, Scott Giles.
Centennial Belle was Bessie Kinder, 83, who had been a resident of Mount Ayr for 73 years.
Three Gray Ladies this year received their twenty-year pins signifing that many years of service to the American Red Cross Gray Lady volunteer program. They are Darlene Irving, Ruth Faust and Jennie Sickels.
Jack-in-the beanstalk had nothing on Douglas Bullock of Ellston. Douglas reports he recently found a stalk of soybeans with approximately 350 pods on it. Perhaps that is a good omen for a bumper harvest.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Hospital trustees were presented with a check for $1,500 towards establishing a kidney dialysis unit at the Monday night meeting. Neil Morgan representing the Farm Bureau, presented the check from Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
Open house set for Ellston Pioneer Center and Mount Ayr Depot. Two events at historic Ringgold County sites are planned for the coming weeks. Events are planned at the Pioneer Museum in Ellston, Sunday September 17 and at the Railroad Depot Museum Sunday September 24.
Kent L. Webb, audiologist with ASI Audiology and Hearing Instruments of Mount Ayr was recently appointed by Governor Thomas Vilsack to the board of speech and pathology and audiology examiners for three years.
A celebrity played golf on the Sun Valley Lake Golf Course on Labor Day. Country western singer Roy Clark, who was appearing at the Lakeside Casino in Osceola, brought three four-somes from his band and staff to play on Labor Day.

Ten Years Ago

Homecoming queen and king candidates announced. Queen candidates are, Kristen Dolecheck, Shaley Miller, Ashton Quick, Laura Davison and Maddie Mobley. King candidates are: Caleb Schnoor, Kyle Dolecheck, Rhett Murphy, Trevor Gooding and Logan Stark.
Chandra Poore, a special education teacher at Mount Ayr Community High School was surprised when Shopko manager Jeanne Storm and assistant manager Angie Green presented her with a check for $500 from the Shopko Foundation. Shopko also gave away $25 gift cards to Allen Schafer and Elaine Willis, employees of MACHS. “It was a pleasure to surprise all the teachers and staff and support all that they do,” said Storm.
Birth: August 27 a daughter, Elizabeth, to Mr. and Mrs. Andy Kellner.
