One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, September 16, 1925.)
Ellston News: The voting on the electric light system came last Thursday and was carried by 32 votes. As the facilities are so much better our electric light service should be much improved.
The following graduates of Mount Ayr high school enrolled September 9 at the State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and report they like the work and the school: Ms Mae Osborne, Maxine Lance, Ada Beall, Ila Taylor and Arthur Palmer.
Births: August 30, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shields..September 4, a son, Vaughn, to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Lamb..September 10, twins, Mary and Margie, to Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Krouch..September 12, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sobotka.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Lyle Dulany, left fielder for the Vets, was honored by his teammates in a brief ceremony just preceding Sunday’s game. He was the receipent of a Bulova wrist watch and braclet, the presentation being made by Paul Teale, as an expression of appreciation for service rendered. Lyle the first reservist to be called from the county, will report September 30 at Fort Hood, TX.
The impending shortage of steel will retard road construction work in Ringgold County at least 2 months, according to County Engineer M.A. Rubek, who was informed this week by two construction companies that steel pipe is not available at the present time for four farm-to-market projects now under contract.
The student body had a general election Tuesday September 12. the purpose of which was to elect new cheerleaders for the forthcoming year. Anne Richards, Linda Dalbey, Jacque Beaman, Phyllis Fletchall and Kay Taylor received a majority vote.
Marriage: Sept. 16, Perry Beasley and Robert Drake.

Fifty Years Ago

Centenial contest winners announced. Arnold Combs of Mount Ayr won the full beard contest with Don Warren of WHO as master of ceremonies. Karen Hebensperger won the authentic costume class of the style show with an 125 year-old outfit.
Six candidates chosen for 1975 homecoming. Six Mount Ayr community high school senior girls have been nominated by their class as homecoming queen candidates. Candidates are Marla Wilkins, Diana Davison, Diane Wilson, Tami Solliday, Trudy Smith and Jenifer Parker.
Gene Sickels of Kellerton and Ronald Green of Lamoni were elected as new members of Rideta Electric Co. board of directiors at the annual meeting held September 5.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The volunteer fire ban remains in effect in Ringgold county. Ringgold county emergency management cordinator, Merle Walter announced this week.
The First Christian Church of Mount Ayr gave it’s first 60th attendance bar at Rally Day on September 17. Ike McGehee of Mount Ayr and a member of the church was presented a 60th attendance bar for having attended Sunday school for 60 years.
Notification has been made in Mount Ayr community school district and in other areas of the county about a person listed on the states sexual offenders registry. This is the first report to the public made in the county under a new state law which provides information to residents in an area when a person with a high risk of offending again moves into an area.

Ten Years Ago

Hall of Fame four to be inducted into the elite Mount Ayr community group Saturday, they are Raymond Baker, Larry Giles, Mark Larsen and Chet Roed.
Members of the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce and other employees and guests of Farmers Cooperative in Mount Ayr held the grand opening of their new fuel pumps Tuesday morning. The new pumps feature ethanol and bio-diesel blending. The station on Hwy 2 will be just one of 32 sites in the state to offer E15.
