One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, September 30, 1925.)
Expressive of a change in sentiment in the Diagonal community was the petitioin brought from that community last week and bearing signatures of prominent and progressive citizens who realize the importance of building a court house and asking the board of supervisors to call a special election to submit the proposition of issuing bonds to provide funds for that purpose.
Dr. Samuel Bailey, county coroner and sheriff Marion Stephens were called Saturday to the Beaconsfield vicinity when the body of R.D. Jordan, traveling salesman of Des Moines was found in his car about 4 1/2 miles east of Beaconsfield. Examination of the body revealed the fact of death was caused by heart failure.
The display of the Aurora Borealis last Wednesday evening was beautiful being bright and the variation of the rays of light as they played upon the northern sky were not unlike fireworks.
There have been two deaths from infantile paralysis in Clearfileld this past week and the schools are temporarily closed. It is hoped the disease will soon be stamped out.

Birth: September 13, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bullock.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Howard Wilkey, of Ellston, a member of the armed forces, is missing in action in Korea, according to a report Monday from the department of defense in Washington, D.C. Private Wilkey is a brother of Sam Edward Wilkey of Ellston.
Gary Swift, 15 year-old, whose hand was blown off in a chemical explosion September 23, at the home of his grandparents in Des Moines has died.
Gary suffered the loss of his hand and severe burns of the arms, face and chest while mixing chemicals belonging to his brother Terry, a chemistry student at Drake University.
Today the local funds of the National Infantile Paralysis Foundation is richer by seven dollars and ten cents, presented through the kindness of Maxine Sickels of the Kellerton vicinity. The gift represents the premium check Mrs. Sickels received at the Ringgold county fair and will be used for a good cause. In making the donation Mrs. Sickels said, “I had the fun, and you are welcome to the money.”

Fifty Years Ago

Newly elected officers of the Farm Bureau are Mrs. Ivan Dolecheck, women’s chairman; Rodney Bastow, treasurer; James McCreary, president; and Richard Jackson, voting delegate.
Diana Davison reigned as queen of the 1975 Mount Ayr Community high school homecoming festivities.
Dick Elliott was the late model point season champion at the Corning Fairgrounds track. He also ran at Boone, Webster City, Bethany, MO, Knoxville and Marshalltown.
Rich Comb, most irresistible boy?! Penny Hymbaugh most irresistible girl?!
These were the results discovered homecoming week during Listen For A Victory Day when the girls couldn’t talk to the boys and Hush Up & Beat ‘Em To It Day when the boys couldn’t talk to the girls.
On Tuesday MACHS girls were given pink football pins that had to be surrencered to the first boy who enticed them to talk. Rich Combs had collected 12 pins by the end of the day.
On Wednesday MACHS boys donned the pins and the girls employed every tactic to lure the boys into vocalization! Penny Hymbaugh was most successful with a collection of 9 pins.
Marriage: Sept. 12, June Goodson and Anthony Jenkins.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A Mount Ayr veterinarian presided over the 177th annual meeting of the Iowa Veterinary Association in Ames Sept. 14-16. Dr. Keith Miller finished up his year as president at the meeting.
A freshman at Mount Ayr Community school shot her first deer on the second day of the early youth hunting season Sept. 17. Anna Rusk took the 8 point buck with a single shot from a 54-caliber muzzleloader at 30 yards. She is the daughter of Al and Dorene Rusk of Clearfield.
Homecoming king and queen candidates announced. King candidates are Caleb Baker, Wes Allen, Matt Routh, Travis Hinz and Randy Derscheid. Queen candidates are LaShay French, Chandra Gregg, Jolene Frost, Randi Reynolds and Natalie Golliday.
Marriage: June 25, Margaret Anderson and Michael Hajjat.
Births: Sept. 25, a son, Sheldon, to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jones..Sept. 30, a son, Benjamin, to Bo and Shelia (Smith) Le..Sept. 22, a son, Mitchel, to Mr. and Mrs. Jon Schaefer.

Ten Years Ago

After eight years and 9 million dollars spent on research and development, Heartland Energy Solutions of Mount Ayr is ready to bring their Freedom 100 wind turbine to the market.
The Ringgold County Sheriff Office participated in the National Take Back Initiative on Saturday Sept. 26. The initiative addresses a vital public safety and health issue: medicines languishing in home cabinets that are susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. During the event 63 pounds of medication was turned in and collected by sheriff officials.
The Mount Ayr Raiderette volleyball team defeated Nodaway Valley and made history this past week, taking the #1 seed in the West division in the Pride of Iowa conference tournament for the first time ever.
