One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, November 18, 1925.)
The eighth grade had a debate Friday on the question “Resolved, that immigration should be further restricted.” The affirmative were Lula Ellison, Edna Ellison, Vincent Dukes, Florence Jackson, Leland Jackson, and Lela Jessup. The negative, Russell Florea, Alfred Peterson, Robert Woollums, Vaugh Stuart and Georgia Caldwell.
The necessary equipment for pumping water from Walnut Creek into the water works reservoir was installed last weeke..nd pumping began Thursday. Some delay was caused the first three days, but since Saturday a continuous three-inch stream has been flowing into the pond. To meet the need and insure a supply of water during the winter town officials recently had built a dam in Walnut Creek on the Warrick farm and it is thought an amply supply may be obtained from this source.
An ax made of stone was recently found by Charles Rhyne near Talmage, Union county. It measures six pounds. It is a silent witness of the habits and customs of the tribes of Indian men who roved at will over the prairies or followed the meandering streams of the territory of which the great state of Iowa is now a portion.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Allen Richards and Laurence Bishop this week formed a partnership in the establishment of a feed store, one block east of the northeast corner of the square in Mount Ayr.
Bishop has been employed by the Williams Auto Co. and presently enrolled at the NWMS college in Maryville, MO. He will return to Mount Ayr at the close of the present term. Richards has been in the employ of the Prentis Hatchery for several years. They will handle Cooper feeds.
Approximately $4,000 damage was caused to the Prentis Hatchery Friday afternoon, when fire broke out in the east wing of the building. The fire, which presumably was caused from an explosion of the heating system located in the west end of the 22×108 foot building, completely destroyed the interior and 2,500 week-old chicks, which had been placed in the building on Monday. The loss of the chicks was estimated at $500 and the damage to the building and contents at $3,500, which were partically covered by insurance.
Friends and neighbors of Clayton “Bill” Rinehart went November 17 and husked his corn. Bill left two months ago for army duty, before the corn picking season.

Fifty Years Ago

Art Allen of Wayland, son of David and Alice Allen of Tingley, has recently published his second book of original music. Titled “Three Cheers,” the book contains 12 religious songs written to help Christians grow and share.
At least 500 bushels of corn were lost Monday, November 17 in a fire at the Glenn Austin farm about 11 miles southwest of Mount Ayr on Hwy 169. Craig Lynch, who operates the farm, and his wife, Ginger and three children were having lunch when a passersby stopped to tell them of the fire in the steel grain drying bin.
Some 70 Mount Ayr school students rode to school Monday morning in buses, the first time in history of the local school that in-town students were bused to classes.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

It’s official. Seven area agencies have signed a 28E agreement creating the Gooseberry Lake Agency and bylaws for the agency. Dick Elliott, Ringgold County Development Corporation president, filed the agreement and the bylaws to Helen Hunt, deputy recorder of Ringgold County Friday, November 17.
A number of awards were presented when the Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation district commissioners held their annual awards banquet Saturday, November 17, at the Mount Ayr American Legion building. Named outstanding district coordinators this year were Cleo and Regina Lynch.
A former Ringgold county resident has been named Indianola Police Officer of the Week in the Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune from Indianola.
Patrol officer Jennifer Grose has worked on the force for 2 1/2 years, working the 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift.
Grose grew up in Kellerton and graduated from Mount Ayr community high school. She attended Southwestern Communtiy College and Simpson College.
Births: October 30, a daughter, Paige, to Mr. and Mrs. Jason Lynch..November 16, a daughter, Samantha, to Bill and Suzi Schaefer.

Ten Years Ago

A group of Amish workers tackle the meticulous job of replacing the bricks on Fillmore Street. Thanks to some decent fall weather, the work is progressing nicely, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
On November 14 Glendenning Motor Co. Inc. helped Mount Ayr drama department raise $3,050 at a “Drive for the Kids” fundraising event held during the school’s fall play. Participants earned a $10 contribution to the school from the Chrysler brand by taking a brief test drive in a 2015 model Town & Country, Chrysler 200 or Chrysler 300 vehicle during the event.
