One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, February 17, 1926.)
Sam Collins, arraigned before Justice G.A. Tennant three weeks ago of $1,200 worth of furs from Arthur Smith’s barn in Tingley the Wednesday previous, and who in default of bail had since been confined in the county jail to await the action of the grand jury, made his escape Tuesday night. Collins gained his liberty by cutting a hole through the brick wall in the second story of the building. Indications are that he received aid from the outside and the officers are proceeding on that theory.
Tingley News: The quarntine on the homes of Baker, Shaffer and England, southwest of town was raised Tuesday, there being no further cases of scarlet fever in their homes.
The Tingley all stars came back with a strong funish and defeated the Diagonal town team by the close score of 39-36 in an over-time basketball game. At one time Diagonal was was leading 24-10. Buchanan proved the star of the game by going into the contest in the last half and holding Diagonal’ s score ace scoreless while he caged three field goals himself.

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, February 15, 1951.)
Investigation to determine the cause of death of Pat Melody of Tingley continues under direction of T.A. Thompson, agent for the State Bureau of Investigation, and H.P. Todd of Ringgold County.
The beaten body of 76-year old bachelor, a retired Tingley blacksmith, was found Sunday morning abut 9:30 by Lee Jacobs at th Melody residence in the yard about four feet from the back door. Jacob called Dave Jobe, who, after examination of he body notified Sheriff Todd and Coroner E.J. Watson.
Linda Kimble, three-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs, George Kimble, who reside twelve miles southwest of Mount Ayr, was fataly injured Saturday evening about 5 o’clock in a shotgun accident.
The girl and her parents were visiting in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Jones, of the Worth, MO, vicinity, when the accident happened.
Mrs. Wayne Jensen, the former Dorothy Jackson, of Mount Ayr, recently had the privilege of appearing in a movie filmed by paramount in San Diego, CA. She will also tour the Paramount Studio in Hollywood, as a guest of Don Robb, assistant production manager. Mrs. Jensen has been offered a modeling contract and will do fashion modeling for the leading clothing stores in San Diego.
Marriage: December 30 Loretta Quinn and James Cole.
Birth: February 6, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Terwilliger.

Announcement was made this week of the sale of another Mount Ayr business.
Effective Monday, February 16, new owners of the Community Meat Processors here will be Gerald Cannon and Dwayne Callison, who have owned and operated the Afton Locker Plant for the past three years.
Irene Hood of Mount Ayr has finally accomplished a goal after years of preparation. She has written a book about weather and had it published.
The title, “Learn the Weather with Mary and John” is appropiate. When Mrs. Hood’s children were small, she was the local weather observer at their home.
Dr. Charles Lawhead and Dr. Collus Lawhead will be establishing the Lawhead Dental Clinic at 104 South Taylor in the location just vacated by Iowa Southern Utilities on the east side of the square. Both dentists will retain their private practices.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Footings were being poured for the new classroom addition being constructed at the Mount Ayr Community Elementary school. The footings are the first step toward the construction of three new classrooms on the northside of the elementary building.
Two groups of students brought information to the Mount Ayr community school board Monday night seeking changes in school policy.
A request that a limited open campus program for seniors in their final quarter of school was approved by the board. More study is being done on a request that students in the alternative school be allowed to attend prom and graduation and possibly participate in some other extracurricular activities at the high school here.
Four Mount Ayr community Raiders qualified for the district wrestling tourament with second place finishes in the sectional tournament at Interstate 35 Saturday. Advancing include Dan Reasoner, Joey King, Blake Haugland, and Andy Ford.
Marriage: February 14, Steve Sobotka and Cindy Bennett.

Five to be honored with induction into prestigious club, Hall of Fame.
Included are Dr. David McDaniel, Dr. Bruce and Michell Ricker, Orr Fisher and Ron Scott.
Mount Ayr advanced five wrestlers to district competition following sectional action last Saturday, February 6. Cal Daughton at the 170 pound class; Justin Wehling in the 182 pound class; Quentin Gregg at 106 pound class; Marcus Daughton at the 138 pound class and Josh Cox in the heavyweight class.
Birth: January 22, a daughter, Addison, to Shannon Hartman and Luke Graves..February 5, son, Cooper, to Colton and Ameila Quick.
Obituaries in this edition were: Frances Jeanette Sheumaker Saltzman and George LeRoy Dailey.
