MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Mount Ayr baseball team made short work out of its first round Class 1A district foe last Friday, beating the Essex Trojans 19-0 in four innings.
The Raiders improved to 12-7 overall and hosted SW Valley on Tuesday night in the next round (results were not available as of press time). The Timberwolves came into the game with a record of 11-9. The two teams have only played once this year due to a game lost to poor weather. That game saw SW Valley beat Mount Ayr 8-7 at Corning on June 29.
Last Friday, the Raiders put their postseason opening game away in the first inning, scoring 15 runs and batting around in their order twice in the inning. Mount Ayr added four runs in the bottom of the second to get the score to 19-0 and advance.
The Raiders had 11 hits in the game led by Tyler Still and Rowan Sackett with two hits each. Other Mount Ayr hits were from Jaxsen Walter, Hayes Stogdill, Isac Dugan, Adler Reed, Manny Hyde, Drew Graham and Avery Wolfe.
Mount Ayr got a combined no-hitter by Collin Conklin and Wolfe. Conklin was the winning pitcher after working three innings. It was his second straight pitching victory. He struck out six, walked three and did not allow a hit or run. Wolfe pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
The Raiders played a pair of Pride of Iowa Conference games last week prior to their postseason opener. The Raiders lost to SW Valley 8-7 on June 29 and beat Wayne 16-6 the following night on June 30.
The Raiders finished a half game behind Lenox for third place in the POI standings this year with a conference record of 8-5. Lenox was second with a record of 9-5.
Mount Ayr had 11 hits in their game with SW Valley. Hayes Stogdill was 4-for-4 with a single and three doubles and also scored three runs. Rowan Sackett, Adler Reed and Tytan Gourley all had two hits. Sackett drove in three runs and Reed and Gourley two runs each. Jaxsen Walter, Drew Graham and Gourley all pitched in the game. Graham took the loss after working three innings and striking out three batters.
Against Wayne, Mount Ayr used a five-run bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead. That stood until the top of the fourth when leading 5-1, Wayne dropped five runs of their own on Mount Ayr to take a 6-5 lead. The Raiders responded with 11 straight runs including six in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead at 11-5. Five more runs scored in the fifth to get the score to 16-6 ending the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
Mount Ayr had 15 hits in the game. Adler Reed was 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. He drove in two runs and scored three times. Isac Dugan was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Jaxsen Walter and Drew Graham both had two hits. Other Raider hits were from Hayes Stogdill, Rowan Sackett, Tyler Still, Tytan Gourley and Collin Conklin.
Conklin was the winning pitcher after going one and two thirds inning in relief. He struck out four and gave up only one hit to the six batters he faced. Weston Adams started the game and went three and a third innings. Adams struck out three, walked two and gave up six runs on five hits.
