Airport hangar needs generate generous donations

MOUNT AYR, Iowa — Much needed financial support has begun to arrive just in time for the Mount Ayr, Judge Lewis Field Airport, FAA designation, 1Y3. Friends of the airport have made significant contributions in the last week following a recent Record News article on Aug. 13 outlining the needs for hanger repairs.
John and Kathy Herren, former long time community members had traveled here recently from their Lake Saint Louis, Mo. home to lay to rest Kathy’s mother Joan Harvey who passed away on August 9. She was 97. John is a former airline pilot who flew for 38 years for several different airlines. As an experienced and accomplished pilot, Herren understands the importance of community airports.
After reading about the airports needs for funds to offset the costs to finish the interior of the airport hanger space, Mr. Herren didn’t hesitate. He reached out to Airport Commission members Kelly Main and Mike Warin to offer his financial assistance. Herren’s donation of $5,000 will enable the work to commence on the hangar and help to restore the space for future airport business.
The commission has been planning a fly in breakfast for area pilots and guests on September 12. Due to the timing, it is unclear whether the repairs to the facility could be completed before the breakfast date.
Additionally, Warin informed the Record News to report another generous donation had arrived from Bob and Cherie Shreck as a result of the news of the airports needs. Airports are signs of progress and stability for any community. The Judge Lewis field airport is no exception.
A bid for the work on the airport hangar was due to be opened by close of business on Tuesday. As of press time the results of the bid process were not available.
