Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Eckerman were returning home in a horsedrawn buggy last Tuesday evening. On Main Street an auto driven by Paul Fouser ran into the buggy, throwing them out, the rig and auto both going into the ditch. Fouser escaped injury but Mrs. Eckerman sustained a fracture of both bones on the left leg just above the ankle and other bruises.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bailey and daughter Ruth visited Friday afternoon in the Archie Bailey home.

Floyd Butler has bought the filling station located at the cross roads north of Benton from Ruby Thornton. We have not heard what Mr. Thornton intends to do.

Wesley Jones, Jr. and Wayne Buckner were awarded a purple ribbon on their 4-H demonstration Tuesday at the Iowa State Fair.

The boys who are members of the Atom Boys 4-H club, demonstrated “Properly Inoculating Legumes.”

Wesley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Jones of Lamoni and Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Buckner of Mount Ayr.

Clarence Wardrip, well known farmer of Waubonsie Township, died Wednesday evening at the Ringgold County Hospital, from a bullet wound suffered several hours earlier in the day, when he attempted to remove his .22 bolt action rifle from his Jeep, preparatory to going hunting.

Craig and Dicky Elliott spent Sunday in Mount Ayr with their grandparemts, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dixion.

Mr. and Mrs. Marshal Matthews, Mary Kathryn and Gail were vistiors Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Matthews of the Maloy vicinity.

David Irving, Paul and Gene Hannon, Bob Fisher and Don Stull went Friday to Chicago, IL, to attend some league baseball games. On Saturday they attended the game between Boston and the White Sox, and on Sunday they witnessed the Yankees and White Sock game. They returned Monday morning to Mount Ayr.

Mount Ayr annual Ridiculous Days promotion has been scheduled for Friday and Saturday September 10-11 according to Max Anderson, president of the Mount Ayr Community Improvement club which sponsors the event.

As usual, highlights of the two-day affair will be the parade on Saturday afternoon, featuring bands from the area in competition. The annual queen contest will also be held Saturday afternoon.

The former “Bob’s Tap” owned by Bob Smith of Mount Ayr is under new management. The tavern, located off the northeast corner of the square, was purchased by Ed Kennedy of Mount Ayr and has been operated by him for the past two weeks.

The business is now known as “Kennedy’s Keg” and is open from 9 a.m. of one day through 2 a.m. the next day.

Marriage: July 31, Roxie Saltzman and Samuel Vanderjagt, Jr…June 6th Connie Morgan and Gary Wiechmann..July 2, Becky Sheumaker and Alexander Modesto.

Births: August 14, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kibbe.

The state of Iowa has been named a temporary receiver in connection with a cattle feeding and investment arrangement Attorney General Tom Miller alleges had violated Iowa’s Consumer Fraud Act.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Professional Business Services, Inc., United Livestock Services, LLC, Rio Baca, Inc., George L. Young and Kathleen I. McConnell. Rio Baca Inc. is an Iowa corporation headquartered in Grand River, which has had large landownings in Decatur County amd eastern Ringgold County.

August 11, Alex Wybranski from Berlin, Germany will be staying with Brian Terrell and Betsy Keenan as an exchange student this year.

Allison Quick of Redding has been named defensive player of the year for her 14 and under fastpitch softball team which played in Kansas and Missouri over the summer.

Ron Landphair, son of Ron and Martha Landphair of Mount Ayr, is the defensive secondary coach for the UNI Panthers, who open the season against Iowa State University this year.

One of the new features on the grounds of the Mount Ayr Community elementary school is Charatcter Counts gazeob built with grant funds and donated labor by district staff and others.

Birth: August 16, a daughter, Jessica, to Ed and Tina McCreary.

Information concerning the creation of a community wind power project in Ringgold County will be the subject of a meeting set for Wednesday, August 24.

Ringgold County engineer Zach Gunsolley has researched the financial impact wind turbines can have on county revenues and reports that the installation of wind turbines in the county could provide a considerable financial benefit.
