State ranked Pleasantville escapes with win

MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Raiders tried to be an inhospitable host on the field to visiting Pleasantville last Friday night in Mount Ayr. However, the second ranked team in the latest Radio Iowa Class A football poll needed a game-winning touchdown in the game’s final minute to secure a 29-26 win.  The Trojans improved to 3-0 while Mount Ayr fell to 1-3.
Pleasantville scored points on its first possession of the game in the opening quarter. The Trojans used a trick play on their first play to flip the field 49 yards from the start of the drive at the 35-yard line. Three plays later, JJ Phillips crossed the goal line from one-yard out for a 7-0 lead with 7:39 left in the first quarter.
Each team traded punts before the Raiders took over for their second drive of the game with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Mount Ayr would embark on a 11-play drive that would culminate in their first touchdown on an Adler Reed 2-yard run. The conversion run for the Raiders failed, and the score was 7-6 Trojans early in the second quarter.
Mount Ayr forced the Trojans into a three and out on the ensuing drive and took over the football with 9:16 left in the half.  The Raiders again would string together a long drive, going 60-yards in just under seven and a half minutes of game clock ending in a Dyson Thompson 2-yard scoring run. A Thompson two-point conversion run gave the Raiders a 14-7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Mount Ayr chewed up almost half the clock in the quarter and scored on its third straight lengthy drive when Reed had his second short scoring run, this one for 1-yard touchdown to give Mount Ayr a 20-7 lead with 6:27 left in the third quarter.
By the quarter’s end, Pleasantville would draw closer with its second touchdown to set the score at 20-14 going to the final quarter.
The Raiders would extend their lead to 26-14 with Reed’s third rushing score with 9:02 left in the game. Pleasantville wasted little time getting back in the game, cutting Mount Ayr’s lead to 26-22 with a 2-yard Phillips run and two-point conversion with 8:23 left.
Plesantville would hold Mount Ayr on a fourth and short play that the Raiders went for and had hoped to put the game away. Instead the Trojans drove down the field and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 18 seconds left on Phillips fourth touchdown of the game, this one from 3-yards out to set the final score at 29-26.
Mount Ayr had 330 yards of total offense. Reed passed for 47 yards on three completions and rushed for 124 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. Thompson rushed for 117 yards on 37 carries and a touchdown to give the Raiders a second 100-yard rusher in the game. Defensively, Thompson led in tackles with 5.5 and Reed added 3.5.
Pleasantville had 225 yards of total offense with 210 passing and 15 rushing yards. Brody Adreon completed seven passes for 161 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in his first start. Adreon started for the injured Braylon Bingham who was injured last week, where Adreon filled in last week. JJ Phillips led the Trojans in rushing with just 34 yards, but four rushing touchdowns. Defensively, Phillips led with 14 tackles including eight solo tackles, and Tatum Baethke with 10 tackles.
This week, Mount Ayr will be on the road at ACGC who improved to 3-0 with a 27-0 win at Nodaway Valley last week.  The Chargers had five turnovers in the game including four fumbles and an interception. ACGC scored two touchdowns in a 16-second time frame with 2:45 left in the game.
Andrew Baumert has passed for 111 yards on ten completions and is the leading rusher for the Chargers with 358 yards on 45 carries and five touchdowns. Three other rushers have over 130 yards and at least one score on the season. The Chargers have won the last six meetings between the schools including wins in each of the last three seasons in the playoffs.
