Paper welcomes new reporter home
By KEN GARNER
MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Mount Ayr Record News and the Diagonal Progress welcomes one of their own back home as Ivy Bice joins the newspapers in a full-time capacity.
Bice’s duties will be many from reporting and photography to designing pages and ads. But her primary duty is to serve as a community story teller.
“I was really sad to leave the newspaper to be honest, but I knew that I had to (spread my wings),” she said. “I saw an opportunity to come back and I took it. I’m just really excited to see where this is gonna take both me and the (newspaper). I’m really excited about reporting and learning how to do that and photography and just different things that I wasn’t doing before.”
Bice previously worked at the newspaper during the 2025-26 school year as a Mount Ayr Community High School student employee and quickly became an integral part of the staff helping design the newspaper and design display advertisements.
Mount Ayr Record News and Diagonal Progress owner and publisher Ken Garner is thrilled to have Bice back on staff, this time in a full-time capacity.
“Ivy is a one-of-a-kind,” Garner said. “She is really a Swiss-Army knife type of employee — capable of so many things. We are blessed to have her back on staff. The sky is truly the limit as to what she can bring to the newspapers.”
Now, as a full-time employee her role expands. Besides the print journalism side, Bice will be working to expand the newspaper’s online and social media presence.
“One of the biggest things that I like about the newspaper business is the opportunity to be creative — I love being creative,” she said. “I also really like staying busy and this job offers that …. I can use that energy and take that with me to talk to people and (tell) their stories.”
A 2026 graduate of MACS, Bice has a wide array of interest from her life-long of dance, to running and being out in nature.
