RACHEL JANE ATKIN KILGORE (FEB. 13, 1878-DEC. 6, 1929)

RACHEL JANE ATKIN, DAUGHTER OF CHARLES B. AND NANCY J. ATKIN, WAS BORN NEAR LONE TREE, JOHNSON COUNTY, IOWA, ON FEBRUARY 13, 1878, BEING THE OLDEST OF A FAMILY OF ELEVEN CHILDREN, AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON DECEMBER 6, 1929, AT THE GREATER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IN CRESTON, IOWA, AFTER  AN ILLNESS OF THREE WEEKS, ALTHOUGH SHE HAD BEEN IN ILL HEALTH FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. SHE DIED AT THE AGE OF 51 YEARS, NINE MONTHS AND TWENTY-THREE DAYS.

WHEN A SMALL CHILD HER PARENTS MOVED FROM JOHNSON COUNTY TO LENOX, IOWA, WHERE SHE GREW TO WOMANHOOD AND WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO JOHN SAMUEL KILGORE ON MARCH 23, 1899, AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ABOUT TWO YEARS SPENT IN OKLAHOMA, HER ENTIRE MARRIED LIFE WAS SPENT IN THE VICINITIES OF CLEARFIELD, LENOX, CROMWELL AND DIAGONAL UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO WHEN SHE MOVED WITH HER HUSBAND AND FAMILY TO A FARM NEAR KELLERTON.

SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF NINE CHILDREN. ONE SON, HARRY WAYNE, PRECEDED HER IN DEATH. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER HUSBAND, J.S. KILGORE, FIVE SONS AND THREE DAUGHTERS: ZENAS R. KILGORE, CHARLES J. KILGORE, AND MRS. LOIS N. BROWN OF DIAGONAL; MARL V., EUNICE EDNA, PAUL R., MILDRED LOUISE AND HAROLD MARVIN AT HOME NEAR KELLERTON, IOWA; ONE GRANDDAUGHTER AND FOUR GRANDSONS; AN AGED MOTHER RESIDING AT IONA, IDAHO, AND THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. THREE SISTERS AND ONE BROTHER PRECEDED HER IN DEATH.

WHEN A CHILD SHE UNITED WITH THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH AND FROM THAT DAY UNTIL THE END LIVED A DEVOTED AND TRUE CHRISTIAN LIFE. ENOUGH CANNOT BE SAID OF HER DEVOTION TO HER HUSBAND AND FAMILY. SHE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF HER LOVED ONES FIRST AND GAVE HER BEST EFFORTS TO MAKE HER HOME BRIGHT AND CHEERFUL FOR HER LOVED ONES. FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS SHE HAD NOT BEEN ENJOYING GOOD HEALTH, YET SHE SAID LITTLE AND CONTINUED HER MOTHERLY DEVOTION. SHE WAS INDEED A TRUE WIFE AND MOTHER.

FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN DIAGONAL.
