Joseph Miles Minarik was born December 8, 1966 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Susan and Joseph R. Minarik. He enjoyed working with computers, collecting trains and photography. His favorite destination was Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida where he and his wife visited every year.
Joseph married Rebecca Sue Haley on October 21, 1995 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although they never had children, they were both active in many projects that benefited the Fishtown neighborhood where they lived. He was employed as a network engineer with Comcast where he was an integral member of the interactive media group responsible for the www.comcast.net website.
Joe co-founded Whatever It Takes, an anti-violence/anti-drug initiative to encourage participation of neighborhood children in positive activities such as carnivals, spelling bees, March Madness academic competitions, Fishtown Family Feud, goal setting assemblies at local schools, movie nights, a children’s theater group, tutoring and various other events throughout the year. Joe was a gentle, generous man who touched many lives. He would claim that he was simply doing for the kids in the neighborhood what someone had done for him as a youngster.
Joe served on a number of committees throughout his life including the Police District Advisory Council, Fishtown Neighborhood Watch, Fishtown Athletic Club, and treasurer for the Fishtown Neighbor’s Association.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, all four grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as a stillborn niece.
Joe is survived by his wife, Rebecca Minarik of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his sister, Mary Theresa Accetta (Joseph) of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews, Kevin Accetta of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Christopher and Dakota Noble of Winterset, Iowa and Breanne Haley of Benton, Iowa; mother and father-in-law, Bob and Linda Haley, and brother-in-law, Bobby Haley, all of Benton, Iowa; sister-in-law, Syndi Noble of Winterset, Iowa, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
