CHARLOTTE JEAN SUMMERS
Charlotte Jean Summers, 80, of Mount Ayr, Iowa passed away August 29, 2011 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. Charlotte was born Charlotte Garrels on October 5, 1930 at the family home in New London, Iowa. She graduated from Pleasant Lawn high school in 1948. She attended and graduated from Burlington Beauty School in 1949 and then earned a two-year teaching degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. She earned a B.A. degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1962. Charlotte was a teacher in Milton, Farmington, Winthrop and Pleasantville, Iowa. She retired from teaching and returned to her first career opening a beauty shop in Mount Ayr.
She remained active as a member of the United Methodist Church, the Mount Ayr Doll Club and the card club and enjoyed sharing her creative talents with the ‘sewing girls’ each week. She enjoyed a variety of crafts often participating in craft shows around the area. She also enjoyed her children, grandsons and great-granddaughters, giving first haircuts and lots of grandma love and support.
Charlotte married Clyde Summers on August 27, 1950 and celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Survivors include daughter Rhonda (Glenn) Kraemer of San Antonio, Texas and son Brian (Sarah) Summers of Dallas Center, Iowa; four grandsons, Matt (Anita) Tillson of San Antonio, Texas, Sam Summers of West Des Moines, Iowa and Joe Summers and Charlie Summers of Ames, Iowa, and three great-granddaughters, Samantha, Abbigail and Addison Tillson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; her parents, Elmer and Wilma Garrels, and three brothers, Floyd, Clifford and Stanford Garrels.
A memorial fund has been established in her name to be decided later. Arrangements were by Watson-Armstrong Funeral home in Mount Ayr.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr on Thursday, September 1, 2011. Rev. Skip Rushing and Rev. Terry Roberts officiated. Musicians were Deb Cannon and Rev. Terry Roberts.
Casket bearers included Matt Tillson, Sam Summers, Joe Summers, Charlie Summers, Dick Still and Jay Watson.
Charlotte was laid at rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
