Velma Louise Hill March 12, 1921 –

Velma Louise Hill, daughter of Orville and Mary Sheldon, was born March 12, 1921 at Diagonal, Iowa and passed away December 5, 2011 at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset, Iowa. Velma graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1939. She worked seven years for Northwestern Telephone Co. in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

On April 14, 1946 in Mount Ayr she was united in marriage to Harris Hill of Tingley, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Susan (Mrs. Jim Thomas) of Montezuma, Iowa, Linda (Mrs. Edmund Seaward) of Winterset, Iowa and Roger Hill of Rockton, Illinois.

As a young girl Velma was very active in and around Mount Ayr. She babysat for many of the young families in her neighborhood. She loved to dance and attended many of the area dances. She was so outgoing and never knew a stranger. In her later years she traveled with a group on an Alaskan Cruise and many bus trips. After marrying Harris, she moved to a farm north of Tingley and lived there for 42 years. She and Harris moved to Tingley and lived there for 18 years. The past six years she has lived at West Bridge in an assisted living apartment in Winterset. She was a member of the Tingley Methodist Church where she served as superintendent of Sunday school and as a Sunday school teacher. She belonged to T Club of Tingley and P.E.O. of Afton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, her husband, her in-laws, two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Those who remain to cherish her memory, along with her children, are sons-in-law, Jim Thomas and Edmund Seaward; daughter-in-law, Pam; one sister, Minnie Breckenridge of Mount Ayr, Iowa; grandchildren, Brent Thomas (wife Sarah) of Urbandale, Iowa, Nathaniel Seaward of Gainesville, Florida, Vanessa (Seaward) Kasparek (husband Chris) of Naples, Italy, Amy (Hill) Broom (husband David) of Zimbabwe, Africa, Aaron Hill (wife Erika) of Fayetteville, Georgia and Kimberly Hill and Tiffany Hill of Rockton, Illinois; nine great-grandchildren, Nash Thomas, Reid Thomas, Emma Kasparek, Camden Kasparek, Anaya Broom, Bianca Broom, Wesley Broom, Harris Hill and Hailey Hill, as well as a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Tingley and Middle River Hospice in Winterset. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Tingley Friday, December 9, 2011, with Pastor Robin Thomas officiating. Musicians were Jenesse Tull and John Allen. 

Burial was in the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley.
